  1. This design doesn't have spiders like a standard u/j. The journals are part of the yoke rather than part of the spider. If you look carefully at the diagram and the photo you might be able to see what I mean but I'm afraid I'm too stupid to explain it very clearly!

I was probably the stupid one to think my post was going to contain the answer, but perhaps the people here will know:-http://www.morriscommercialclub.co.uk/index.html

  2. Assuming that it is standard cross journal (spider) and bearing caps inside the ring, have you stripped it down and measured the dimensions of the cross journal and bearing caps, then you could perhaps find one in a motor factors that is listed for a different vehicle or with the dimensions you might be lucky and one on a "universal joint cross reference chart"

If you need something special, this company may be able to help:-

  3. As I expected its a no go , they can't mix the colour its still far to dark .

I've read that the SCC2 was used with SCC1A .I was only going to paint it with the one colour (SCC2) is this correct or do I need to use both ?.

Have you had a refund for the paint or have you still got it?

If you have the paint, you could try to lighten it yourself. I suggest the following method:-

    1. Buy a small can of white paint that is the same type as your 15 litres of brown.

    2. Tip a small amount of the white paint into a container and add the brown until you hopefully achieve the brown that you are looking for but remember paint is darker when dry.

    3. Paint a trial area.

    4. If the trial has worked, you will need to know the ratio of brown to white so that you can mix a larger batch (enough for the whole job).

It is very difficult if not impossible to mix a number of batches of paint and end up with an identical colour.

  4. I'm trying to research Cyril Norman Rhodes's life but only know a few facts from his obituary in a copy of a Birmingham paper supplied to me by The Library of Birmingham :-

    Born 1905, died 1963.

Articled as a chartered accountant in Glasgow.

Joined Vickers Armstrong Ltd, at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1932.

Became commercial manager at the Castle Bromwich works in 1944 and he may have stayed with Vickers until 1946 when he was appointed secretary of Charles Churchill and Co. Ltd., Birmingham.

I have contacted The RAF Museum, Hendon and The Shuttleworth Collection etc. Cambridge University Library (holders of Vickers Armstrong archives but no staff records), The Spitfire Society Eastern Wing, numerous aviation historians and even Professor Carl Chinn who is Professor of Community History at the University of Birmingham but no one could add anything extra. Can you please help?

  5. As no one has come up with a water pump for you, is it worth you trying companies such as these:-

    1. As the civilian Austin 10 ran without a water pump would the more powerful Tilly engine run without one if the engine is not over stretched by a heavy load or "high" speed use?

    2. Is it possible to adapt another water pump to fit?

I appreciate neither of the 2 above would be 100% original but it would be useable a Tilly.

  6. Dosen't this post from the site contain the dimensions that you need?

There were a number of models of wartime suppressed Mk II Stens, although the 2 main ones are:

Carbine, m/c Sten, 9mm Mk2(S) - A MkII Sten that utilises the 12 & 3/4 " long x 1 & 1/2" OD - Mk2(S) - {S = special purpose) silencer (drawn steel tube) and canvas "Sleeve, thermal' and horsehair liner pad handguard - (trickyrick posted a pic of this variant)

The SOE (Special Operations Executive) type that utilised the 22 & 1/2" x 2 1/4" OD - CISA silencing unit -that attaches to the casing (Brit Mil. nomenclature for 'receiver') by the barrel nut AND a springloaded uni-directional ratchet plate which is fixed to the right hand side of gun, just ahead of the MkII magazine housing by a 3/32" screw.

There are some great pics of the latter in Pete Laidler's Sten book that I can scan if they are of use.
