  1. Bobs Leyland Martian - the shopping list !!:coffee:

Windscreen and frames top and bottom driver and passenger

    Passenger side quarter light window

    Near side rear sliding window

These need to come from a recovery not a cargo or artillary

    Also ...

    Switch Panel

    Dash Assembly - speedo etc.

    Two air wiper motors

    Two passenger seat backs

    Air pressure gauge

    Low air warning light

    Trailer Brake valve

    Transfer box knob

    Steering Wheel

    Turret insulation

    Welder (no just kidding)

Bob thinks thats the lot but if anything else comes up we will post it.

    :tup::

Unless you know of a recovery Martian being broken....which I understand you do.... the most difficult parts to source on this list maybe the window frames. Everything else shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'm still waiting for the bloke who may have a N.O.S. dash available to get back to me but I have been told that one of the spares dealers I recommended to Bob also may have new dashes available.

Woolies may be able to help with window frame rubber extrusions. They will send you a free catalogue.

  2. John Atlees Antar has been seen as both a ballast tractor and a fifth wheel. I understood it was originally 5th Wheel, but this seems wrong. In the above shot she sports the correct winch rollers for the Ballast tractor version, And now it is fifth wheeled, these have had to be removed, and obviously the fifth wheel type winch rollers aren't available, so it now runs with winch rollers.

It certainly looks much better as a ballast tractor. Well, I think it does.

  3. 6x4??? Nice motor nonetheless. :-D

Yeah, well, Mr. Jarman is a photographer not a vehicle expert and quite a few of his 'photos are incorrectly described. He has, however, kindly given me permission to post a few of his pix on here.(And he was out with his camera at many shows over the past 15 years)

  4. I have seen some 5 / 6 years back a mk1 milly tanker not sure if it was genuine or not because it was to far away but it was opposite dudley zoo it was when they were building the new retail park / tesco's dose any one know were it went after the builders finished ?

Pete, it would be nice to think one, or two, have survived. It's just possible.

  5. Some more Milly Mk1's for you guys...:)

Austin, thank you for posting these fabulous pictures.

They certainly do look nice. Both appear to be 6 X 4 and, as Simon suggests, both have the early type cabs. A few, maybe three or four, fixed side cargos have survived into preservation but no fuel tankers that I'm aware of. I wonder where these 'photos were taken. Judging from the road position, not in the UK. Germany perhaps ?

  6. He is desperate for an FV style dash and instruments, as this is the hardest part to source.

If we mean the combined speedo/rev counter that was in everything from the Champ to the Scammell I don't think that will be hard to source. NOS may be possible......I'm hoping to know by tomorrow evening.

Getting a good used one would be NO problem at all. There is no reason why this unfortunate Martian shouldn't be back as it was very soon.

    What else is needed ?

    Windscreen wiper motors ?

    Gear/winch lever knobs ?

    Steering wheel ?

    Rubber mouldings around windows ?

Obviously, windscreens, side windows and seats can all be remade.

Any chance of a proper list of all the parts required to get this lorry back on the road ?

  7. While we're on this subject I very highly recommend "Two eggs on my plate" by Oluf Olsen. Mr.Olsen was extraordinarily brave, as were all the men and women Norwegian resistance fighters, and this book details some of his exploits. The "two eggs" in the title refers to the custom of giving two eggs, and not the usual one, at breakfast time to signal that this was the day one would be leaving the training camp in the UK and being parachuted back into Norway. A thrilling read.

    Just adding this link.

  8. Hi guys - thanks for the replies - nice to feel so welcome.

6x6 - yes have done Noggin Natter up to a few years ago. Myself, my cousin with his explorer and gps No Nuts with his explorer used to toddle across! I haven't done it since my son was born but am hopeful now hes big enough to be strapped to the seat with a rachet strap, shackle etc to be there this year.

I have a keen interest in landrovers owning a defender up to the said son. Now a disco owner but trying to make her look as little like a standard disco as possible !! I am hopeful to purchase a series this year for the lady wife to drive to the shows! New toy - lovely!.

GMC - holy mother it would bring me out in a rash !! Have you thought about a diseal lump (I will duck behind something now)

Exporers seem very popular and am glad to hear I am not the only one mad enough to own one and have it keep breaking on me.

I am getting the pics of bits of broken Scammell and mine in its many shades of green (oh god does she need a respray) ASAP. Am not a keen photographer so when shes been broken no pics! Must mend and get angry with her when broken not photograph. Have some old ones of a few engine changes on mine and an explorer called Efnick put the volvo FL7 into Efnick and TL12 into mine - not sure how they will scan - if they are any cop will upload them. Will also scan in a photo of her when she was Nightmare to see if she rings any bells with any of you!!

Feel free to chat back !!

I've just posted a reply on the Explorer thread. Cheers.

  9. Thor698,

'Thor' is "Nightmare ?.....Quite a transformation ! If you don't mind me saying 'Nightmare' did look a bit sinister when all in black. I remember 'Efnick' very well. I think I once saw you in company with 'Efnick' blasting down the A303, probably on your way to a show, one Friday evening.

God willing, I should be at this years 'Noggin' and Natter' so look forward to meeting you then.

What happened to the very nice sand coloured Explorer that was often at rallies with you and your mates ? It's owner lived on a farm very close to the A303 and very kindly sold me a front winch cable guide for a Scammell.
