  2. While at Magnificent Motors show on Eastbourne seafront with my Explorer last weekend a chap who had driven Explorers in service came over and looked longingly up at the drivers seat, I told him he could get in but he thought his poor old knees wouldn't let him, it was too high.

     

    Luckily I carry a small ladder for just such occasions and so, with a little help, he sat at the wheel grinning his head off and saying things like "There's a Saracen in the ditch up the road, lets go and get it, and then the upside down Ferret round the corner!"

     

    It's a simple thing that can make many an Old Soldier's day, mums feel it's safer for their kids as well, so if you can, please carry a small ladder if you own a high vehicle.

  3. The seller unfortunately removed the N/S engine cover the add value to the other scammell he has for sale :cry: Looks like they could be fabricated although a bit tricky.

     

    After you have fabricated a perfect replica side cover, it should be distressed to look right, the correct and easiest way is to leave it on the ground and drive over it.

     

    However in your case perhaps this job should be left to your 101 as he will be upset at the huge cuckoo in the nest and would relish the chance to get even! Best if you pretend not to see him doing it and then act really baffled and annoyed!

  4. mine too was a FFSP version based at RAF Kinloss.

    Fitted For Snow Plough, I presume, mine was at Air Flight Ranges Div, T&EE Larkhill latterly, but may well have been used for bully boy route clearance as the coupling shaft was twisted, this may have led to the demise of the rubber bits!

     

    here is another of the six in that contract 9870, also used to sport a snow plough.

    no fear of compromising the front axle movement with the air cleaner then, but I see the new owner has improved the forward visibility a bit!

Hi Bazza, just a word of caution re the cab lying on its back, a friend of mine did the floor repairs and welding on a bedford cab in that position and when we put it back upright the door opening had become narrower and the doors didn't fit back in. Maybe best to tack a temp prop in if using any heat.

I couldn't have put it better myself 6X6, exactly the way I worked with mine, I did the cab first then took all the wheels off did all the brakes etc.but always made sure it was still usable after that, doing little bits at a time, Best to keep it rolling if you don't want to loose momentum. Bit like the forth bridge on wheels!

  8. You won't find any scientific facts to back any of this up, no more than you will regarding telepathy and such. We Scammell lovers just know it's true, we feel it, it's an instinct!

     

    Dragging a reluctant one home like this seldom works as the Scammell beckoned the wrong man (not me), who although he loved trucks had his head turned by that damned yankee stuff stuff, and it is laying in the grass waiting again!

  9. Could you put me right ? I keep going over the last few posts on here and if I have understood what is being said correctly then I have completely got the wrong end of the stick regarding how people end up with old lorries. Surely, just like cats and very beautiful women, old Scammells choose who will have the privilege of looking after them. As you know, old lorries have a very complex transdimensional spiritual life of their own and until the right person comes along they WILL just sit and wait. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with a lorry that's sitting and waiting, it just means that it's being fussy and has yet to find anyone who meets fully with it's approval.

     

    Quite so, well observed, mine had been coyly hiding behind some boxes until he noticed me passing by, others have been found sunning themselves in long grass and behind bushes, keeping well hidden, only to sit up when the right person comes by, comunicating with a dry squeaking sound a bit like rusty tin moving in the wind at the right moment.

    The one Andy posted earlier captioned "Some just return to nature!" has in fact spotted him , poor thing doesn't know that he already has one in his recovery ward.

Thanks for a really interesting thread Mike, I worked for a few days nearby to those hangars when the what must have been the prototype Skyship 600 was undergoing trials, I was amazed at how it was being thrown around the sky as I had imagined airships to be unwealdy and ponderous, not so at all.

  11. Whilst driving back alone from an AWDC enduro meeting at West Harptree in the cold dark p****ng rain, I missed a turning and pulled onto the grass verge in view of a road junction sign board to look at my map and get back on route.

    When I tried to pull away of course I was stuck, LR and trailer with Muddler on board well down and going nowhere!

    I Highlift jacked the trailer off and jacked up the rear end of the LR, then searched about for some packing to put under the wheels, in the end all I could find was some empty plastic 5 ltr cans, with the tops screwed on real tight I put them in the ruts, lowered the LR down, they held up so I gave it a go, worked a treat!

    Then dragged the trailer out onto the road on a rope, lots of hooting and swearing as the public swerved round it (lights not connected again yet) and on my way, wet, knackered but not stuck.

  12. We stopped off at a clothes stall, asked for two wire coat hangers and tied it on with them to get home.

     

    When the rear prop shaft universal joint died, I just took it off and used the front wheel drive, and when the master brake cylinder failed, I just used the gears and handbrake.

    Now this is the sort of info we need, This sort of thing must be dying out nowadays as you don't see cars with the spare coat hanger stuck in the front wing as you used to! :-D

     

    I drove the Explorer in FWD once, and didn't the front tyres yelp pulling out of junctions!

  13. Mike - it has now been sold to a collector in Suffolk, it appears to be in really good order, and the cleanest one I've seen for a long while. Hopefully won't be too long before it is seen out and about again.

    Well I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to sport a non compliant radiator grill!
