speaking from experience tire fitters will love it when tasked with changing four/five tires on a ferret!!!!!:cool2:
Yeah, that's what I hear..The tires i'm looking at are about $200.00 each U.S. ...plus tubes and flap protectors on mine.......My wallet may run from me when I get the bill!!!!!!!!!!! IF a heavy tire truck comes to the vehicle in the U.S. it is $95.00 per hour to and from the shop...Plus $95.00 an hour while working on the tires....We already took off the rims/tires and I will take them to the shop.......I plan on keeping my ferret...I am really enjoying it with all the history and all...Then the great people I have met on this forum........
  2. slight side bar here guys, as per my previous post my truck should be on 9x13 rubber, tyres are now available in a sand tread (not for road use as they are agricultural but good for rolling round show grounds) Inner tubes are another matter.

I spotted on a US Site that 9x13 white walls were available for vintage cars, do any of you guys know if tubes are available? (the site had no info) Tubes would need to be straight stem short suckers on the valve.

    Any info gratefully recieved.

    Regards

    Tim

Check with Coker tires and powerkingtires.com they both make military/vintage tires and have tubes and flaps..Good luck and please post back........

I am currently waiting on a call from Power king tires about the 900-16 fitting my Ferret...As others have state here it should not be a problem IF a real experienced tire man is doing the mounting...

  3. Hi All,

Over the years I expect you have all seen my Wanted Adverts for 155mm Howitzer items as well as general Artillery equipment? Well I thought it was time for you to see what I do with all the stuff I collect.

Please see below some photos from my Vietnam Artillery Display held at the 2012 War and Peace Show. This years display was dedicated to Mr Larry tesh of The 1/92nd Field Artillery who served during the Vietnam War.

The unit sign in the photos is copied from one of his orignal photographs taken at Fort Bragg, North Carolina the year before he was deployed to Vietnam.

    I hope you enjoy them

As always I'm still on the look out for anything related to the US 155mm Howitzer to make my displays bigger and better. These items can be tools, canvas items, equipment, cleaning brushes etc etc.

Do any of our members know any Artillery dealers or have items for sale themselves ??? They can be from WW2 , Korea and Vietnam

    Thank you

WOW !!!!! That is awesome!!! That's a traveling museum!!!!Great job in preserving history...

  4. just popping down the garage luv, i took these shots on one of the many imps road runs from radnor park in folkstone, on this occaision rod cadman decided to join us with his sherman tank. Near rod and rexs home they were building a new by_pass and rod passed his track laying licence on a cat d8, nearly at the end of the road run the sherman was decididly short of petrol so rod drove the tank straight onto the forecourt, the mayhem this caused was hilarious, the manager thought the tank was going to disappear below ground, but all went well and we continued on to the pub, hope of interest, tony g.

    awesome!!!!!!!!!

  5. No, but in April I am going to be re-united with the very first Chieftain I signed for!! 00EB68. Its on Otterburn Range.

Its odd really. Just dug out my old troop notebook. We only knew them by their last two numbers, and so, my very first Ferret was '' '' 64. The others were '' '' 16, '' '' 10, and '' '' 83. No idea now what the other letters were, but perhaps someone more in tune can illuminate??:kiss:

    R

Really great...Remember to bring your camera.......

  6. No, it was never adopted........The idea came from a couple of Republican guys, who had adapted a Moggy Minor van to take a catapult. They fired nail bombs with it.

And so, the wizards of the MOD had a bulb light up in their heads......a repo Lanny would make a very interesting show stopper!!

Tootles have you ever reunited with your old Ferret?

  7. Joe;

NAPA carries EP90. Their supplier is ASHLAND Oil Co. (Valvoline). If you buy the 5 gallon pail labeled Valvoline it is $115.00, if you buy the 5 gallon pail labeled NAPA it is $82.00 it is the same oil. Thanks for the lead on the other oil.

    John G.

Hi John thanks for responding.....NAPA was the first 2 stores I called they both said they carry75/90 and can order 80/90 but no 90...I went with an oil distributor out of PA. that had the EP90GL4...Now I am on to another venture...ferret was delivered today and gasket between carb & intake manifold is bad so it had some high idle time trying to get it of the transporting trailer.....I've located a gasket thanks to a forum member so will fix that within the week then on to a full brake and line rebuild....

About the high speed fluid that should go in the fluid coupler...I purchased a 5 gallon pail and won't be using it as the previous owner for the past 32 years used non detergent sae30 motor oil !!!!!!!! IF you are close I can make you a great deal on that if interested..

  8. Ah Joe! I'm sorry to say you have an incurable case of Green Disiease. Prime symptom is asking lots of questions about obscure bits of kit. Like the rest of us, you'll just have to live with it! :-D

Yes Tony.....Received all handbooks yesterday...Lots to study and learn...The best are the individual stories of regular back yard mechanics and the soldiers that served...

The previous owner of the Ferret said it shipped out wednesday in an enclosed trailer....He said it was in the trailer with expensive classic Porche's and Bmw's...He said it was quite a sight to see...I told him one of those Porche's better not scratch my tank...LOL.....

Any personal tips on anything about the Ferret please feel free to pm me...Any tips are greatly appreciated from everyone..

  9. The turret, of coarse, was originally produced for the Saracen, and when taking my instructors coarse D&M (wheeled) at Bovington, I was told during the coarse that the turret and its associated 'bits' weighed in at almost a ton. This, I presume, was the difference between a Mk1/1, and the Mk 2/6 we had at the time. Put it like this, I wouldn't want one dropped on my toe, lol.

I think you must agree that operational use differs from what the old girls are subjected to now. I was on an exercise in Somerset in 1971, when one turned over at high speed, as its N/S front wheel hit a soft verge, causing the steering wheel to 'whip' out of the drivers hands. The commander was lucky, he saw it coming and dropped down onto his seat. The Ferret ended up on its turret, and the shaken and petrol soaked crew had a lucky escape. The Troop Leader waded through the fuel, pulling both guys out. He was a (later) much maligned, (by the press), 2nd Lt Charles (Lord) Brocket, an extremely brave man.

The second incident I know personally about, occurred in Belfast, when a Mk2, in fast pursuit of a gunman's getaway car, hit a wet zebra crossing late at night. Once again the Ferret went its own way, rolling twice before coming to a stop. The commander was thrown clear.

The above post is a great reminder for all.......

About 6 years ago my friend here in the USA who was an MP in the U.S.ARMY National Guard got called for active duty to go to Afghanistan....Before his unit left to go overseas they went thru about a month of various training...He said everyone had to go thru a special course for driving the Humvee due to a real increase in accidents with Humvees which resulted in an increase of deaths...I could't understand how such a wide vehicle made for off road use could have increased rollovers..I knew about the Jeep rollovers but a wide Humvee !!!!!!!!!! He told me that with the uparmouring that had been done it was making the Humvees top heavy !!!!!!!!!

    Just something to remember.

Hope all is well with everyone..

  10. I'd check with Battery Tender and ask them. Their website technical info page shows two 12V batteries in series with a charger on each so it looks possible. The main thing is to ensure the charger outputs have no earth reference, otherwise you'll end up shorting out one of the batteries.

    Andy

I'm not the brightest person when people try to explain things to me sometimes it goes in one ear and out the other....The link that you provided showed diagrams which i fully comprehended....

Thank you very much....Thanks to all...

    Sincerly,

    Joe

  11. Whilst it is true that GL4 contains fewer additives than GL5 it is not totally free, to be completely safe you need to use GL1. This spec is freely available in the UK from a number of manufacturers including Morris Oils and I see no reason why it shouldn't be also available in the US.

After a discussion with their engineer he said the Ferret needs the EP (extra pressure)90 and GL4 would be fine for old classic vehicles.... He said doing ALOT of everyday high speed or long driving with GL4 would cause the problem of certain interior metal deteriorating and since the Ferret wouldn't be used as such GL4 would be fine... .......

Please don't think i am arguing i am trying to learn as there is so much different information out that one can easily be confused...I am only trying to determine what would be a good application......

Thank you all for the discussion....

  12. I was told by every local parts store (over 20) that in the U.S. they don't make EP90 GL4 gear oil that some items on the Ferret need..

After alot of searching i found a distributor of the EP90 GL4 gear oil (not ep75/90 gl5).....I ordered from PSC Petroleum Service Company here in the USA 855-899-7467....5 gallon pail for about $78.00 which includes UPS shipping....

GL5 is a newer oil which will harm the bronze internal parts found in old classic vehicles...The GL4 is the rating your old classic should have....

  13. What you will get is a lot of conflicting information, and you have to be careful.

I would recommend Andys site for reference: http://www.ferret-fv701.co.uk/

    Look at "it might help"

All I can tell you is what I have put in mine:

Engine: A classic Mono-grade Oil - Low detergent - SAE30W (morris lubricants golden film)

    Gearbox: As above

    Air cleaner: As above

Transfer box + all bevel boxes + Steering boxes: EP90 GL4 grade gear oil

Braking system: DOT 4 brake fluid

Fluid Fluwheel ISO 10 Hydraulic fluid (Morris Liquimatic No.1)

    Thank you

  14. if u are driving it every two weeks or so with good batts fitted it should start fine with- out batts being on trickle charge all the time toolmans list of lubricants is pretty spot on .

It might be alot more than that that's why is use trickle chargers on things......I'm just not sure if it's ok to hook up 1-12 volt BATTERY TENDER trickle charger to each battery WITHOUT having to remove a cable from the battery...
