  1. The Tank museum bovington use thw above and they have been very good

    Al

or these guys http://www.burnettandhillman.co.uk (who supply Pirtek)

Thanks both. Just been to Pirtek who said that it's a very weird thread, also the setup is weird. It's a BSP setup, but with a 1 3/8" UNF thread. They don't stock a 1 3/8" thread, a 1 5/16" yes, but not the one I need.

onthercorner, I'll give them a go....

So does anyone know anybody selling NOS Chieftain stuff? I need the engine oil tank for the GUE......

  2. Does anybody know of a supplier or manufacturer where I can get hydraulic fittings?

We've got a right angled union off a Chieftain that's given up the ghost.

It's 1 3/8" UNF thread. Male one end with a captive nut and fixed olive the other.

I've tried Marcus Glenn but they don't have any spares and don't know anybody who could help.

I did a trawl through the furom but couldn't find anyone.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. The Cent ARV is pretty rotten (I think she came from Shoeburyness, but I don't know for sure), we've got a chieftain ARV that works (sometimes), and petrol is expensive!

I have no idea what's happening to anything on the list from a year ago. To be honest everyone seems to be so involved with the IWM London re-fit that the rest has gone quiet.

  4. What is the point of an Antar with no Cent on it's back. I will send them my address just in case they have no plans for it.

The cent on the back of the Antar is a shell, the engine bay is full of rubble. Last I heard they are going to sell it for scrap. Depending on who you listen to either the comet or the cent Mk III that I've been working on will go on it.

On the original list it showed a picture of a Cent AVRE in a slot for a Cent ARV, it's the ARV that's up for disposal (again the old wives club recon it'll be scrapped).

  5. IS there anywhere a list of all the EMER codes for Centurions? I'm after echelons 1-4 for Mk5B AVRE and Mk12. I'd also like to get a full NATO parts list for Cent (including the Meteor Mk4B).

Anyone out there who could help?

    Cheers

  6. For almost my entire adult life I have worked for Uncle Sam. First as a Huey mechanic, which was fun for a while, then and for the last 24 years I have been working for these guys http://www.nps.gov/index.htm. I started off at almost the bottom of the ladder and have worked my way up to being the superintendent of a few different parks. I absolutely love it as it has taken me around the country and back again. I get to meet people from around the world and work in places people take vacations in. I truly can't think of a better job for me.

That's a phenominal job, I thought I had a good view out of my office window.

I'm going to see an exhibition of Ansell Adams' photographs next weekend.

  7. Have you the means to carry out a compression loss test (also called a cylinder leakage test)? It'll give you the ability to find out % of loss and where the loss is going. They are pretty expensive items to buy but they do tell you what the issue is without taking the engine apart.

General idea is to bring piston up to TDC on firing stroke, attach the tester and it will pump a constant rate of compressed air into the cylinder. By listening to the exhaust, inlet, and crank case breather you can tell what isn't sealing.

I was introduced to this tool whilst working on a RR Meteor and it enabled us to make a full diagnosis of the cylinders in less that 2 hours. It also showed where the compression tester had been giving false readings due to the inlet track being blocked.

Would have thought that any good garage would have one....

  8. if I didnt dance I would go loopy, its the only thing that empties my head and gives me a few hours of peace...you cannot dance and think of anything else....pure therapy...

gets me close to one of the most dear things in my life...

I know what you mean; for me it's getting on my motorbike. If I don't empty my head I'd end up sticking it into a hedge. (Actually spannering is the same).

oh, and I'm constantly getting IWM adverts, I know I'm DAS filth, but only on a Sunday.......

  9. Hi,

    Lovely thread, absolutely stunning!

You mentioned that you were looking for some different spark plugs. Does the Griffing use the same plug as the Merlin? If so I wonder if Meteor plugs might help. I know that they are used in ground run Merlins. If they are of use I know someone who's got a few.

  10. Thank you both,

It's the main brakes, not the steering system. The brake pedal didn't want to move and she didn't want to stop.

Removed the pedal and cylinder (more of a gate valve than a cylinder). Cleaned both up and re-fitted.

thought we might need to get the main engine running to bleed the hydraulics. But really good to know we are on the right track.

We've got the steering system to bleed as well.

After working on the IWM's Cent mkIII it was quite surprising to find a tank with a hydraulic system again......
