  1. Just edited yesterdays post with a far better photograph (1979 Coronet paperback edition) of Most Secret War by R.V. Jones..

    4180ebc6-c3da-4c6f-9282-6cff130364ec_zpsdbc1bbaa.jpg

The buildings at storage location do look a bit like the previous one shown at Lashenden Museum , but a bit different.

  2. I found this photograph in the book :-

    4180ebc6-c3da-4c6f-9282-6cff130364ec_zpsdbc1bbaa.jpg

The photograph is credited to the IWM , it is not very clear in the book , I have edited to show a better photograph that may aid identification - as to a genuine German kamikaze doodlebug. The book is the Coronet paperback edition.

I think somebody may be able to identify the site location from the distinctive buildings in the background.

It clearly does show a man seated in the cockpit with the canopy hinged sideways.

  3. What you do is buy (very cheap) NEW , by Lucas TVS (Lucas manuf. in India) TVS 700 (7") . Make certain you have 3 adj. securing screws type (there is other different screw versions) , there is a slight difference a cut out in the annular outer with a metal clip , remove the clip & throw it away.

This is a lot cheaper than buyoing a set of just the 3 qty. screws & springs etc.

Plastic Bowls , Tupperware bowls YUK YUK spew.

  4. Probably more is know today , books by German authors such as Joachim Fest - his book Hitler. One of his books (Inside Hitlers Bunker) at the end explains the reason he did not use Footnotes to cite. Eyewitness accounts are very unreliable. Miles of bookshelvers with Hitler books , yet so little is known (Hitler took care of that).

So where does that leave us.

The few best sellers in English language that had large world-wide sales / not so large world-wide sales such as :-

The high Cost of Hitler : by John Gunther (October 1939)

The House that Hitler Built : by Stephen H. Roberts (first 1937)

    ----------

I knew Hitler : by Kurt Ludecke (first 1937)

When I read this book , (a best seller at the time , probably more in USA than UK) , I considered - fair enough BUT some did not ring true to me at all , (read how he raised finance in France - gambling).

HOWEVER - it took all of 64 years until Kurt Ludecke was effectively "outed" , it was not until the English language version (2001) by the German author Lothar Machtan and his book : The Hidden Hitler.

    -----------

The odd other best sellers such as the rambling classic "That Day Alone" by Pierre-van-Passen , the main "modified version" for the British market being 1943 , ISTR the the better un-censored version by Garden City in USA would be 1942 , just play safe and get a more costly 1st. Edn. 1st Impression.

Most later books - IMHO , you are just paying into somebody by their private pension fund .

  5. A firm at Blaydon-on-Tyne had a contract with the British Army for over 100 years for the supply of animal panniers , certainly at abt. 1994 they were still making batches of Mule panniers for Hong Kong - the batch I was shown may have been the very last ?

  6. Big ray , I would tend to agree. However it was also the fact of British and French troops still on German soil many years after the armistice signing (armies of occupation).

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1315869/Germany-end-World-War-One-reparations-92-years-59m-final-payment.html#axzz2JfR5zb9q

One comment often made by tourists to Germany during the 1930's , was that it was a country of uniforms - almost everybody seemed to be wearing some sort of uniform. As you are aware , often what uniform you wore was often a "class" thing , the middle class tended to aim for a SS uniform , rather than SA or any of the others. Until Hitler deemed otherwise (following a incident in U.S.A.) the swastika flag was a party flag , making the flag the German national flag resolved the issue with the foreigners.

  7. 25-HF-72 - it would not have a plate under the bonnet.

    --------------

Well - I can tell you this with certainty, I own 23-HF-86 , without doing the maths - that is 200 vehicles earlier build , however saying that - they are so near and slightly different contract , well no - same Contract but different Item No.

23-HF-86 is a 12 volt GS. RHD They are so close they could have gone down the two lines next to each other.

    FV.22A / 87 / Item 3

Now then - the DIS is July 1979 ,

Unfortunately - I don't think I have done a MOD History search on this lightweight - so uncertain which R.A.O.C. Depot is was received & date.

However - I can tell you that it was painted by Solihull in NATO Green.

Somewhere - I do have the approx. date & cContract change from DBG to NATO Green. IIRC - it was a 1979.

    -------

Photographs - I like to see a pic of the dumb-iron , there were early & late S3 chassis - so this gives the ball park chassis date for if genuine original. Also later FFR's (single ammeter on shunt) the control box was secured on underside of chassis , there are two extra brackets - this also helps.

    More pics the better.

e.g. There are loads of internal changes - too many to list here that can date (I am better off not making this list public) LoL

    External tool-box / underbonnet tool-box.

Lighting positions + holes in rear body.

    If with IR lighting

Type of front wings (later FFR had different wings)

Tail-gate types (a few , 4 qty lower tail-gate are good for dating - but can get swopped about)

Series 3 early axles , Series 3 "Rationalized" axles. + the "Hybrid" axles of abt. 1979 (loads of differs here , don't wish to make too many folks aware).

Obviously all parts can be swopped for earlier / later. However - a Bitsa , best avoided.

I normally weigh up all - any suspicion - investigate further. Ringers are often outed on balance of probability of a few things.

Lots of L'wts are rung to get "Historic" road tax free , meaning for re-sale they are greatly de-valued (because you can't make them legal unles the owner were to own up and hand over correct docs. & plates) - why bother when there are genuine unmolested trucks for sale ?

  8. To nitpick rivet count , everything is wrong.

I will not bother going into great detail.

    ---

Genuine plate but hand-stamped , and I may add incorrect type of plate for vehicle BUT there is a good reason.

    IMG_0152.jpg

    ---

That type of plate is available as a genuine part - IIRC it started about "KA" (1982/83). Does come in handy if a original is lost - but only for a 17 digit VIN and this truck is well pre 14 digit VIN that started abt. end of 1979 or early 1980 and lasted for 12 months (then pre-fix SAL started , that means Land Rover) - hence the 3 extra digit.

    IMG_0403.jpg

At this time a VIN plate was fitted under the bonnet and this would (BUT NOT ALWAYS) have reference to LEYLAND CARS.

However this is the inside of cab nomenclature plate and the wording would be like this :-

    IMG_1114-1.jpg

    IMG_1674.jpg

All will be in-line because of the way the "indexing head" does it tidy , each contract would be done , any error and it is quite easy to knock a few extra off.

    ======

When this truck was manufactured - most of the details were in fact printed on the anodised plate , less info. was die-stamped using a "indexing head" - exactly the correct amount for the contract.

    ----

The correct style plate will be available as a very clever vinyl printed plate , when in doubt , check with cele thinners. You would have to rub like hell to fade genuine anodized finish.

FVE22A/87 is wrong on its own 25HF72 , would fall into Item 4 of the contract so it would read FVE22A/87/4 (or ITEM 4 may at times be used in full - depends Lol).

Don't expect to find all these plates secured with rivets , ISTR some are affixed with screws from new.

    IMG_1570.jpg

Don't go by this one - it too was repositioned when steering changed to RHD.

    ==========================

    IMG_0869.jpg

    IMG_0866.jpg

    or

    IMG_0787.jpg

I would have to do a bit more checking to decide what style of plate would be correct LoL , a one-off anodized would cost loads of £££ as a "genuine repro" to pass muster.

    =======

Pity not more photographs , often the truck can be very close identified for age etc. this way. Yes , I wonder if the number branded on the dumb-iron is correct stamped (unmolested) and matches the "replacement" plate LoL

  9. You need to get a sample identified for what it is and the "burst pressure" established , 5/8" / 16mm would be possibly too large on dia. for steel "Bundy" that would be used on many brake lines . Such as Norgren IMI Technical will be able to supply comparison tables for pressure etc. against Cunifer (Kunifer) & Nylon .

Try a cut & file smooth - you should see if it is wound & seamed tube.

  10. I can tell you this much with certainty :-

    NSN 2530-99-811-6988

    =================

My research - came to a end.

I had measured up for mountings etc, thinking it is just a standard "remote reservoir". IIRC - it is that way - BUT most of these are for DIY "Kit Cars" and are made from aluminium. This is no good , with brakes slamming on - you need cast iron to prevent "fragmentation".

I then progressed further as I suspected there were car fitments for this MC (and there were).

I have a bit of a collection of jumbled notes.

I recall coming to the conclusion there are the same cylinders dimensions same BUT the mounting flange is 90 degrees out, probably they took a common bulkhead mount & changed it by 90 degree to suit the widetrack ??

    -----------------------------------------

However - I believe it was made by Lucas Girling (for Commercial applications) - "I believe" ??? I would have to take a look , probably I took several photographs of one in situ. I know I had a bit of difficulty measuring flange hole centres when in situ.

    7/8" bore (0.875")

    1.7/16" max. stroke

Their (Lucas Girling) number being possibly 64068694 . Lucas 873 seems to be the cast No. but this could be machined for a few cylinders.

Yet another number - I have a note of is TRW 64046158 . I think this has a 11mm reservoir / or feed pipe thread.

It may be obsolete ?? but there could be good spurious about in CI ??

    So - cars , I have a note of Rover P6

BUT , I seemed to Zero in on :-

    Jaguar E-Type / S-Type / Mk. 10 420G

    CLUTCH master cylinder

    JAGUAR Part No. C27186

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JAGUAR-E-TYPE-S-TYPE-MK10-420G-CLUTCH-MASTER-CYLINDER-C27186-/300803177117?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4609443a9d

However , you will note the photograph seems to show a "reproduction" and it is a aluminium cylinder , I believe what you need is the "commercial" version of this that is cast iron . Possibly the Jag OEM was cast iron & some may be around repro or such as Lockheed , may be worth asking TRW about this

    Lol

  11. LoL

    QUOTE.

Hopes were raised earlier this month with the discovery of a crate in Myitkyina, in the northern state of Kachin. However the hopes turned to disappointment when it became clear the crate was full of muddy water, which would take weeks to pump out.

WHICH WOULD TAKE WEEKS TO PUMP OUT !!!

That must be the Short Sterling crates - time for the JCB - time for , JCB 3CX Dipper c/w Extra Dig
