  1. Travelling down the A50 towards Derby today about 12 ish, passed a car with a trailer. Inside the trailer was freshly blasted tank turret. Anybody else see it? It was quite a large turret like something off an Achilles or similar, but it had a roof on it.

  2. Finally got round to fitting the vice on the back of the Samson that I bought months ago. For some reason the horizontal mounting plate appeared to have bean gas axed off. had to make up a new fabrication to bolt on in its place to mount the vice on. Anyone got any ideas why the mount would have been removed?

Decided to jet wash off the running gear as it got considerable amounts of grunge on/in it during recovering the tractor & car from the ford down our lane a few weeks ago. The amount of stuff that gets trapped is unbelievable( that's the excuse I used with the wife when she got upset about the state of our drive afterwards!). I would have thought that in service this could have been a problem as if it had frozen it might have caused problems. Youngest seems to enjoy jet washing. Splendid, it will save me a job

  3. Heavy rain last night brought a visitor to our doors. he had managed to virtually submerge his van in the ford at the bottom of our lane. Could We help? Of course We could. Out, with the trusty old leyland tractor & some recovery chains & down the lane we trundled. Alas the road had been washed out & with a lurch the not so trusty tractor took on a 45 degree lean. much apologies from the vistor for causing me so much trouble. A bit of head scratching later & we fired up the Samson & reversed down the lane. I never realised how crap the lights on a CVRT are! Hitched up the tractor & dragged it out, then the same for the van. More apologies from the bloke who clearly didn't realise how much fun this is for the likes of us.

  4. No, about 400 feet. Long enough though.

The winch is supposed to have fast payout, but when I toggle the switch nothing much happens. The rate of line payout remains the same.

Anybody out there with any ideas?

  5. I think I have finally managed to work out how to upload photos. Here's one of my Samson.

I set it up as a zip wire for my kids party.

Splitting the towing eye from the A frame was a character building exercise. if anyone ever requires a replacement pin after they have sawn the original one into about 5 bits to get it out like I did, then I have a drawing for manufacturing them & the bushes it sits in

  6. How come the army is buying new cvrts whilst scrapping out the same or similar models ? Surely they could be upgraded to latest spec cheaper than new builds. Shouldn't complain though, at least it puts stuff on the market for us.

  7. Took Sammy out for a run yesterday and got the engine good & warm. On return the engine idle speed was up & I found it near impossible to engage reverse. Any ideas why the idle speed should increase when hot. When the vehicle is cold it idles fine

  8. Just had a look at the spare j60s in my garage. The spacer is plastic on mine & is retained by a thin nut on the end of the shaft. Looks like the nut has come off, probably lurking somewhere inaccessible in the depths of the engine compartment

  9. unused Sammy for a zip line at a party last week. Converted the towing frame so as to raise the end of the zip line. not easy as the pin holding the tow hitch was seized solid & had to be sabre sawed into 4 bits & pressed out using. A 15 ton press.b

  10. Hi

    Help

My Samson is fitted with a wharndon winch which works fine with the exception of the fast payout function. I toggle the switch on the compartment roof & it makes no difference to the rate of line payout. How is is supposed to work? The manual mentions a solenoid valve, where is this & how does it make any difference to the rate of rotation of the winch?

Also,I read on a thread somehwere that somebody has a double pulley snatchblock for the Samson. Does anybody know where there might be one for sale?

  11. Hello people

I am new to this forum kind of thing although I have had military vehicles for some time. I wonder if anyone out there can ansewer a couple of questions regarding my Samson CVRT

The winch works fine with the exception of the fast payout function. I flick the toggle switch & it makes no difference. I have read in the manual that it should operate a solenoid. Wher is this & how does it make the line payour faster

Also I am getting ready to replace the gearbox with a spare I have. Is/are there any emers for the procedure?

I believe the box is shimmed, is this due to variation in the hull or gearbox, or both? When I replace the box will I have to reshim?

    Cheers Guy
