  1. I seem to recall reading that the Americans took the decision to concentrate on quantity.

They knew the shermans were not up to the job of one on one battles but could be used to swamp the enemy.

Brutal for the crews and a cold calculated decision by the policy makers.

By the time Patton and others realized that The Sherman was'nt going to br successful on the battlefield it was a bit late to change things , They agreed that the next tank should be a diesel but the logistics of handling two fuels to the battle area would be too difficult they felt so they were stuck with a gasoline powered tank for the duration of the war , yes they had built a small number of Stuarts and Shermans with diesel engines but kept them for training purposes state side only .

Your right in that they felt numbers ,training ,battle field recovery and repair would make up for the tank design flaws.

    imo.

  2. I guess it has to do with what period ones is displaying as a WWII vehicle would not look as pretty as something from a peace time example . What I 'm trying to say is that a WWII vehicle would be correct to have a very rushed and rough finish as time saved was most important as they did not plan the vehicle lasting in service all that long a few weeks or months in a combat area before needing to be sent to the rebuild shops , again it was repair repaint and send it out , I dont think they cared how neat it looked as long as the numbers and details were visible/legible. I ve seen many photo's of vehicles , softskins coming off production lines with ghosting and over spray around stencil's and a few that were tanks being given a quick repaint with all the dirt and crews equipment still in place , being done with a pressure pot and gun behind a building outdoors likely not all that many miles distant from where the action was going on .

  3. A clip from the public resource group on Youtube of U.S.Army activities in 1950's and 1960's West Berlin and West Germany . a collection of MP activities and the logistics of rebuilding equipment and storing spare parts for the U.S.Army , and a clip of U.S.Army logistics in Korea . A little bit of everything shown uniforms , vehicles , locations.

    Something went wrong...

  4. Thats one fine job , I d be keeping that sealed underglass afraid of anything happening to it . Naugh its Ok you sweated and toiled over it and your reward is to take it out and enjoy all the miles and adventures you can have with it !

  5. If the world's largest press is the South Gate, CA, which weighs 2,650 tons, stands more than 60-feet tall, is capable of generating 40,000 tons of pressure, they still reckon you can't fit a round peg in a square hole.....I would have thought at this tonnage it probably would go in.....

I think the original quote was "you cant put a square peg in a round hole" This was in fact refering to the assembly of wooden post and beam pegged construction as used in houses and barns . Its actually a very sound and good construction method . It was easy to bore a round hole in a piece of wood and easy to carve a square peg . The result was a very tight and very strong assembly as the square shoulders of the peg would bite into the sides of the round hole and resist any motion to work its way loose while the wood might be used in a green state ,as as it dried the fit would stay tight over time .

  6. I second the Thank You for taking and posting the Great photo's , Only wish I had a tardis to be able to attend such a outstanding show .The efforts of all show in a clean well though out event. One day I hope to be over there to see it all for myself.

  7. Sorry to see the set back your Scammell gave you . At least you had a good drive about to enjoy some of the fruits of all the labors to get it back on the road. Speaking of those , That vehicles sure does take up a FULL lane and with dodging the over hanging branches and close signs and buildings I can understand the need to have vehicle width limits over there !

I ll keep my fingers crossed that this latest problem can be solved satifactory so you can be out on the roads doing your part to replacate the driving scenes from "DUEL" .

  8. Seems you have done an abolutely Cracking good job of it ! What with all the working and fabricating right down to the last minute ! I am looking foreward to the past ride report and all the details, since the last photo shows it going along under its own power and no signs of any thing leaking from the rad. that all is good in the world.
