  1. I m sure you will have heard that the states of Nebraska and Iowa yesterday had quite a bit of strong winds and huge hail storm damage . My house was significantly impacted by what they said was 2" TO 3" PLUS sized hail .I work 30 miles away so by the time I got home the damage was done , Most all of the north facing windows broken and blown into the house , siding is riddled with holes beyond counting . Put up plastic sheet on the inside of the windows to stem the drafts and driving rain as best I could.

     

    On the other side we didn't loose power or had any flooding < on top of a hill here> Thousands of others have had damage to their property as well .

     

    There are at least 3 car dealer ships in my town and one Woodhouse Ford , Blair Nebraska who has 4500 vehicles on his several dealerships in Omaha as well as here was reported on the news this morning as having 100 million plus U.S. dollars in damage alone . You can google truck mountain and see this largest property.

  2. OH MY, My heart goes out to that poor owner. So much work and sweat and money, poof all gone , and practically has to start the restoration all over again . Even if the outfit transporting the engine had insurance coverage and it paid the owner of the engine , could it be restored ?

  3. I hope you will be successful in your contact with the museum at least as to what happened. I hope your father left some documentation as to how it was "Donated" <the conditions> to the museum . If something is loaned you retain some control as to its fate but if its "given" then they can do with it as they want, store it , restore it , trade it or loan it out. That's at least what happen's over on this side of the pond.

  4. Very sorry to hear of his passing.

     

    I don't post on this forum much, but I spent a good many hours on this thread reading Ray's amazing stories. I should of taken the time to thank him for sharing them.

    I too had enjoyed his stories early on and encouraged him to keep on writing I had been off the forum for long time , I had just read the post of his being ill just recently but thought he was going to be OK .My sincerest condolences to his family. I 'm glad he was able to pass on all stories he did , now they will be an archive we can read and re-read . RIP Big ray

Over here We call that the hoist and there are number of differences between the Garwood and Heil units , the Heil being the more robust system in my opinion ,and uses lifting links that attach from the lifting lever assy to the dump body the Garwood has the cylinder basically attached directly to the lift arm assy to the dump body . both are shown in the TM 9-801 tech manual .

     

    Sorry no photo's of mine as nothing has happened to it , all that business of the economic problems over here .

  6. The last image I saw of the LBG was a sad few scraps of metal , just barely aircraft shaped , not even sure what part of the aircraft it was , this was in the last week or two ,not sure where I came across the photo . the only bits of it that exist intact are at the Wright Patterson Museum

  7. By gosh if ever there was a accident waiting to happen it was that chassis!. You did the right thing in taking it completely apart it never ever would have been right any other way . Great repairs and attention to details ! Although its been badly abused in the past , with these repairs you will insure it another chance to be seen on and off the road for many years to come !

I was based in Cyprus until last year and had the oppotunity to get a ride in the chase car that follows the U2 on take off and landing, I also spent time with the pilots in the crew room as they were getting ready for the flight. An awesome experience driving down the runway chasing the U2 at crazy speeds, I have some great video and photos but can't upload any at the moment as I'm away with work.

     

    Can you say anything about the functions that the chase cars provide ? I can understand them monitoring if anything is loose or to recover the outrigger wheels are they responsible for anything else ?
