That being said, I recall the trailers and generators which I worked on had post 1950 registrations numbers.  Also think the air cooled engine was 1950's as well.     I have attached the data plate with the post war registration number, can that give an idea as to it later life. 

    Is there any reference material on what the war time engine would have been, assuming the engine sat in it has been changed to air cooled version. 

    Again I always associated the 6KV generator as 240v, but the data plate shows 110v?

  2. Thanks Richard for the post. 

    I have a dilemma over the climax trailer, I was always of the opinion that these were late 40s early 50s, because of this so many have been broken up for spares for the GS trailers, ultimately my plans to get the donor parts i need for the 5KV 

    The dilemma I have is over the chassis tag. (image below). 

    Contract number is 23/9778

    WD Number X6263811

    Made by Taskers 

    So by reckoning this is wartime??? 

    There is additional data plate on the rear with a post war number too, just don't have a picture to hand. 

     

    Thoughts?

  3. Just an update on this weekends progress, Axles stripped, all component parts de-greased and ran through the blast cabinet. 

    The bearings on the trailer were shot. So treated it to an new set of Timken's 

    Getting the hubs of the drums was easy with the flypress, they went with a right CRACK, when they parted. Pushing the old bearing seats out of the hubs turned into particular nasty job ..... in the end I had to resort to welding some flat bar to give me some purchase on the fly press. 

     

    Its easy to see how so many hubs have damaged threads, Without the press i'm not sure these would have come out with serious damage.

  4. That’s definitely them.
    The shape is perfect…….
    The history I know on them. They were fitted to a crudely made cart with a galvanised tank to providing drinking water for a remote cottage. 
    Over years the cottage fell into decay. Eventually falling into the brook behind the cottage. This is where we found the first wheel. 
    The second wheel didn’t surface for some years later and turned up significantly further down river.
    I always thought they had some military connection but wasn’t sure.

     

    We pulled both wheels out of the brook and up the bank. Just so they didn’t get washed away Whether or not they are still there as it was 12+ years since I walked that way. 

  5. Can anyone help:- ?

    I need to try an locate some of the brass latches, these would have been common on the generator trailers, welding trailers, maybe other vehicles of the period. 

    I guess lots of these trailers will have been broken up for the wheels/hitches etc. 

    I have four, although not in the best shape, another four will get me out of a fix, but eight in total would be fab.

    Hi Niek

    I will be starting the construction of the upper body over the next few weeks. 

    I have a few questions

    * I think i have enough of the original frame to dimensional piece back together, BUT, when I measure the angle iron on the frame, the bottom sections that bolt to the bed of the trailer look to be a heavier section than the uprights? Can you confirm this. 

    * How is the wheel arch constructed I cant work this out. I've attached a picture of the trailer chassis, the chalk marks indicating the holes where the inner frame bolts down.... but how does this work with the wheel arch?

  7. Spent this evening studying the trailer chassis,or whats left of it.............  😩

    My anticipation was to strip, sandblast, replace the rotten parts, keep the chassis original  (or as much as possible). 

    Its too far gone, sadly beyond economical repair.............. 

    I do have a Plan B, which is a second trailer chassis, I purchased this again to strip of the useful parts.

    I,ve never really studied properly till tonight.... The chassis is dimensionally the same of the binned stores trailer,  has the exact same frame configuration , even the holes on the trailer floor match. 

    The data plate on this trailer just mild steel and not brass, which i though was very odd? Looks original to the trailer....  admittedly its in slightly better condition than the data plate on the other trailer which is mild steel too, So i'm guessing these are original..

      I can make out the following characters.  

    X6147 3 or 8 39

    OE15039

    S794 8 or 5? 

    Is there any way of associating the contract numbers vs the contract numbers issued for the binned stores trailer? 

    The chassis on the second trailer does need some repairs........ but generally very good.... near excellent.

    There is the skeleton of the frame remaining inside the trailer, I guess my best option is to draw this up, then if you could help patch the blanks that would be much appreciated. 

    Not the best pictures, but you can  just make out the remains of the frame work inside the trailer, you can make out most of the rivet holes. 

    Additionally studying the construction it just looks like the bins are simply bolted to the chassis
