Another option which I have found works quite well is to put a very slight bend on the last cm of the dipstick. You only need a couple of degrees and this helps to stop the snagging...
But if you did want to shorten it my approach would be as follows. First make sure the oil is topped up correctly to the 'full' mark. Find a new shorter piece of tube, or trim the existing one to the desired length. Then shorten the dipstick a few cm at a time until it fits the shorter tube without fouling anything. Obviously as you get closer to the correct length reduce the amount you are shortening by, so as to avoid going too far! Once you have the stick at the correct length, simply punch a line across at the level shown, which you know is correct for the full mark, then put another one on for the low mark, referring to the original marks for the correct distance.
If I were to do it, that's how I'd go about it, or am I missing something?
But I'd try the bend thing first!

As an aside does anybody have a source for the canvas straps? I am heartily sick of nipping my fingers every time I open and close the hatch!

I agree! I struggle to keep more than 2 or 3 vehicles running at any one time, and none of mine are Chieftains!

Some vids I have just posted on behalf of Ian Evans of Galloway Tanks...!

LOL I saw it too and recognized it - I thought about posting but thought I would be derided as too much of an anorak - I should have known better!

Bob has done this loads of times....I recommend you speak to him!

Very interesting thanks for posting. I agree the captions really make them. Having visited Cherbourg a few years back the pics of the harbour were very interesting - the harbour rail terminus is now a huge aquarium!

I spoke to a close friend of mine who was a U.S.Army M60 tank driver in 1971....He was stationed in Germany.....He said they transported several times by railroad flat car....He said because of the ramp they backed the tank up onto the flat car....They backed them up over several cars to get to the flat car it belonged on as the ramp to take them off they pulled straight ahead...
He also stated the train ran by an electric wire up above and he personally witnessed a guy stand up on the tank too high and made contact accidently and was electrocuted....
I don't know about Germany but the UK railway uses 25,000 volts and I was taught the 'safe' distance is 9 feet - any closer and there is a possibility of arcing....also if somebody has been electrocuted, leave it to the emergency services - they will almost certainly be dead or dying anyway at that voltage.

Looks like something from Alton Towers, or for battery hens...!
I went on an employers day up at catterick about 3 years back where they carted us around in the back of a rattly old MJ with centre seats so these must be fairly recent...

Just watched on youtube. I thought it was good. Not overtly commercialised and very respectful and in conjunction with RBL too. Definitely a little risky but I think they have pulled it off. It is certainly better than that bl**dy penguin (with apologies to non UK members)...!

The master cylinder assembly may be the same, but make sure the seals are suitable for mineral oil/ hydraulic fluid. If they are for brake fluid they wont work, but if you get a seal rebuild kit you should be able to convert ok...

3 tank transporters at A5/A43 roundabout Towcester today, very impressive sight, even though they were unladen.
Saw 6 of them on the m1 heading south - Oshkosh het's - absolute beasts - possibly the same ones...

Great pics - the Saladin will make a good companion....!

The Saladin at Allenby Bks is no longer where it was. More later when I find a pic.

As we in the Netherlands didn't fight in WW1 we don't have the 11/11 silence.
But at 12:00 hours, so at the same time as the Brits (we are a hour ahead), I went outside looking to the west and observed 2 minutes of silence.
I also wore a poppy for the last few weeks.
And on remembrance sunday I went to 2 nearby monuments to lay flowers from our own garden.
Later my brother and I did the same thing at the monument in our village.
Well done Sir..!

So maybe scrapped (or at withams!) - had the name El Alamein on it...
-
Attended the wreath laying at the railway war memorial in york today, and I would say it was pretty well attended. The Royal Signals had a separate service not 200 yards away in memorial gardens, and the silence was observed in the station.
Although there were still plenty of people going about their business I too would say it is as well observed as I have known it....

Ahhh good at least not gone to the scrappy then...!
