  1. Have now got the m20 back home, had a small job to do on the kickstarter as it wasn't engaging every time, also fitted a new throttle. Went out for a ride on it today, but found it had a bit of a wheel wobble at certain speeds, hopefully it is just a tyre as the ones that are on it are a bit knackered, either that or the road as it only did it on the same stretch of road and nowhere else!
  2. Well then, I have always wanted a Bsa M20 and at the weekend I finally took the plunge and bought one! :-D I went and had a look at it and heard it running etc and it sounded fine, but as with most things I won't really know how good it is until I have had a good trundle about on it. I will post some pictures of it when I collect it, have never owned or had anything to do with one before so it will be bit of a learning curve working stuff out on it once we have it unloaded off the trailer at home, at least we have plenty of land to have a play on before venturing out onto the road!! Any particular tips for riding and maintenance/common problems to look out for?
  3. Not a lot done lately, plan is to get the engine and gearbox fitted, put the cab back on and try it out before removing everything and shotblasting it all. Made a start on joining up the engine and gearbox, need to fit a new pilot bearing to the flywheel, get a different clutch plate and make the bellhousing adaptor
  4. Thanks for the quick replies, think I have overcome the clutch plate problem, there is a place up the road from where I work that deals in clutches/brakes that will hopefully modify the landrover clutch plate so that it fits the fordson gearbox. I then have to work out the release bearing to clutch release mechanism distances etc so that the adapter plate can be made to the correct thickness etc to enable the clutch to release engage correctly, no doubt there will be more fun and games!!!
  5. Good evening every one, another question in regards to converting my WOT6 to diesel, I am in the process of joining the landrover engine to the Fordson gearbox, now here is the question, What is the diameter of a Flathead V8 clutch plate? I have a clutch plate that fits the gearbox splines but it is out of a Fordson major tractor and measures 11inches and looks to big. Any one shed any light? hopefully what I have typed makes sense to somebody!!
  6. Have done a bit of work on the WOT over the Christmas break, I spied a bit of filler in the bottom half of the cab and decided to investigate what was under it before it gets shotblasted, luckily for me the filler was hiding the welds from where new panels have been welded in, at least it wasn't rot!! The yellow parts of the cab show where I have ground the filler/paint back to bare metal. The cab has had four new corners welded in, with a bit of tidying up they should be fine also picked up the engine, decided on a 200tdi landrover discovery engine, have started to couple it to the gearbox and it isn't going to be as bad a job as I first thought
  7. Right then, evening people, a question for some of you out there, I am fitting a 200tdi landrover engine to my WOT6 in place of the v8 as I bought the truck without an engine. Now I have a bellhousing to fit a Ford 4D engine to the WOT6 gearbox, but was there a similar thing used to fit the V8 to the gearbox? Just wondering as the 4D engine is somewhat bigger in size than a landrover so may be easier to make a V8 bellhousing fit the landrover engine if such a thing exists Thanks Tom
  8. Thanks richard, the adaptor plate i have got for it is a proper ford thing so they must have used the gearbox with a 4d at some point so fingers crossed it will work ok Have spent the weekend up the farm on the truck and have made a bit of progress, the body is now off and next job is to try hanging the engine in it and see what engine mounts need to be made Found a bit of rot in the floor when trying to unbolt the mud guards from the wheel boxes!!!
  9. yes the body should hopefully be coming off this weekend, there isn't too much holding it on so shouldn't be to bad to take off. Engine is deffo going to be a ford 4d now as have located an adaptor to bolt it straight to the origanal gearbox. I have heard about a few ford cmp's with 4d's in that have been sucesful, but i dont know how much of the geartrain the wot6 shares with it appart from gearbox? Any one shed any light on this? So fingers crossed a 4d will have enough go in it to get decent speed on the road!
  10. Resumed work on the WOT6 today after bit of a gap due to harvest hours at work, the rest of the cab has now been removed along with the fuel tank, spare wheel carrier and steering box. There is a bit of rot and filler in the lower half of the cab to sort out but it doesn't look to bad to do, and still undecided on the engine, thinking of either a perkins 4236 or 4cyl thames trader engine but am unsure whether I will loose speed due to the fact that the v8 would have run a lot faster than old old diesel!! Although I am getting quite a nice heap of bits I have taken off now
  11. Not much done on the truck lately sadly, harvest hours at work and still working on finding an engine. I want to go diesel to make the truck a bit more useable and able to do a few of the further away shows from where I live without busting the bank, have considered lpg but I seem to have a thing against for some reason! Now i'm not much of a landrover person, someone will hopefully spot this and help me out :help: but I am now thinking of fitting a 300tdi discovery/defender engine and probably the gearbox with it, any views on what this may go like? making the engine fit dosn't bother me, just how well it will drive/pull!!!
  12. Thanks for the various information, I may have to invest in one of the manuals. Have decided on an engine, I have had a measure up and a fordson 4d engine should fit nicely plus I have three in the shed, only problem being that they all need rebuilding!!! Will probably fit a thames trader gearbox as well because it will fit straight on the 4d engine. I have a 4 speed trader gearbox but a 5 speed one would be nice if anybody knows the whereabouts of one? also took the gmc out at the weekend, and developed a misfire on the way home, bloomin truck does not like hot weather
  13. yep that is correct!! I thought that the B17 engine was in the photo as well but now I look again it didn't quite make it in, you can just see the bottom of the engine stand in the top left corner of the second photo
  14. Took the top of the cab and some other bits and pieces off last night, also found the hand throttle lurking behind the fuel tank!!! ajmac, I know about as much as you!! This is my first british vehicle and I am trying to find out about it as I go along, have only really dealt with American vehicles before Who can spot the B17 parts in the pictures??
  15. Made a start on the truck today, took the doors off along with the wings and the tin work from the interior of the cab, aiming to have the cab off so that i can start welding it up and get some idea of how much room i'v got for a replacement engine. the V8 is very tempting, but dont think my pocket would stick it, running the GMC alone is bad enough on apprentice wages!!! sorry about the quality of the pics, those pesky americans didn't think about putting in decent lights when they built the airfield
  16. Finally retrieved the Wot6 from Manchester yesterday, after many phone calls and confusion with haulage firms I decided to run our own lorry up to Manchester to collect it. after a 15 mile detour around Manchester due to road works we got it loaded with the help of the tractor and set off for the 200 odd mile trip back to Rattlesden. The truck now sits in a shed on the airfield awaiting restoration, first job is to remove the cab and find a suitable engine as it does not currently have one. The plan is to hopefully find a 4.2 litre toyota landcruiser engine as it could considerably hurt my bank balance running it with the v8 in it, although it is very tempting!! Right thats all for now and here are a few pics of it, and thanks to Rik for putting up with the hassle of the lorries and helping load it!!
  17. Hi Vulture The picture is a little blurry but the teeth around the inside of the gear have gotten rather rounded, plus had a proper look at the old box and found that 5th gear has some play in it allowing it to come out of mesh with the selector/synchro. I don't really know how difficult it would have been to repair, but would have had a go had a blitz on the truck tonight and the gearbox is now ready bar putting on the top cover and bolting in the floor, realised that I want to use the truck Saturday afternoon!!!
  18. Thanks for the advice people, dropped the gearbox out this evening with the forklift, a pallet and a block of wood in the end. Some of you may notice the forklift is getting close to the wing mirror, yes I did smash it and here is the critter that is causing the problems!! sorry if not very clear The gearbox isn't going to be rebuilt for now as want to use the truck in a couple of weeks so another gearbox has been acquired and is going to be fitted, all going well hopefully I will have 5th gear back! plus I have bought another truck and want to get on with restoring that
  19. have you had a look at how the 4D engine has been joined to the gearbox as going to have to do this to one of my trucks, its not a chevy but anything similar will be helpful! Tom (the one from mid suffolk light railway do with gmc with dodgy gearbox!)
  20. Progress on the gearbox today, think I have found the problem as well! Removed the top cover to have a peek inside and from what I can see it looks like the selector dog for 4/5th gear is very worn and so are the teeth inside 4th and 5th which the sliding dog drives. some of the other gears also look worn but will look at it harder when the box is right out. Also removed the pto box in the end to ease getting the gearbox out.
  21. Very nice, I think i'm living in the wrong place, could I borrow some of your luck? all I keep finding about my way is 50 cal bullets, will find a b17 buried somewhere on the airfield one day!! if you need any parts for the 4d engine let me know and will see what i can do as have got those engines coming out of my ears! :-D
  22. well you can engage 5th but it keeps throwing it out of gear whether it is under load or not, you can hold it in gear but you can tell when it tries to throw it out as is quite violent about it! A couple of people have told me about a washer that can break up and also a collar of sorts that gets worn and allows it to ride out of gear. Think i may remove top cover and pto box to aid removal, will have another session on it at weekend
  23. Thanks for the pointers :-D was planning on dropping it out with forklift and a set of chains, just wondered if would be any easier to get the gearbox out from under the truck without the pto box attatched. Won't get a chance to do any more to it until weekend as in nottingham on a course at the mo.
  24. Right then, spurred on by the fact that Howard has borrowed the floor out of the gmc I have decided to drop the gearbox out and sort out 5th gear as have been running about to the past couple of shows minus 5th good job they weren't far away, all linkages etc have been disconnected and it is ready drop out bar the bolts holding it in Also is it worth dropping the pto box off of the gearbox? any ideas?
  25. Howard Fowler is going well, going to take it up to woolpit steam in may along with the jimmy hopefully, will just mess up your thread and put a pic of the fowler on to show you!!:-D
