  1. I can only speak from experience.

More often than not, POA or no price often means the seller is asking a ridiculous price for the item and they know it.

I must admit, if the ads do not give a price or indication of price I can't be bothered to make an enquiry unless I really want something.

In that case, 9 times out of 10 - see my first point!

  3. I don't get it? A straight 90W GL4 gear oil is an EP90, which is equivalent to an OEP220 and is perfect for your requirement (OEP literally standing for Oil, Extreme Pressure). EP doesn't indicate multi-grade, it indicates that it has additives to deal with extreme pressures (shearing) inside a gear housing.

OEP220 can be substituted with an 80w90, as long as it's suitable for use with white and yellow metals and the manufacturer can confirm that.

    Cheers,

    Terry

    That is my thinking Terry.

I intend using it in vehicles that do less that than say 50-100 miles a year.

I don't think using a straight 90 gear oil is going to hurt.

After all, lots has been written about not using an EP oil in vintage vehicles with bronze components but use a straight gear oil instead.

If I was doing motorway or fast A road mileage, I'd certainly put an 80/90 GL4 in.

  4. Just a ponderance, but you could add some ZDDP additive to make it EP like. Not sure how well that would work, but it's a consideration.

    Thanks Lauren.

From my understanding, EP oil is designed to "stick" better than a straight oil, hence giving longer protection to components.

Also EP is Extream Pressure and can withstand the hostile environments of modern hypoid gearing.

However, most of our military vehicles don't do excessive mileage at prolonged high speed so I'd like to think, a straight 90 gear oil would be perfectly sufficient?

  5. Hi guys.

Does anyone have any thoughts in regard to using a straight 90 gear oil in place of an 80/90 EP oil.

I know the reverse question has been discussed in regard to using EP oil in older vehicles where bronze components are used but how about using a straight gear oil in place of a hypoid oil?

I'm asking as I have purchased a 205 drum of straight gear oil and don't really want to purchase a 205 drum of 80/90 GL4 oil.

I'm thinking of using the gear oil in military applications where it states using OEP220.

Bear in mind, I'm not covering thousands of miles in our vehicles so I don't see the necessity of using a hypoid gear oil?

    Any thoughts chaps?

    Thanks

  6. Hi all.

    Just a confirmation request please.

I am mid servicing the Stalwart Mk2 after swimming in the Solent.

The gearbox oil is is contaminated so I am dropping the lot.

To my surpries, the gearbox was filled with EP oil.

My servicing schedule clearly states OMD110.

I've checked on here and people seem to be discussing OEP220 for the gearbox which in my mind is wrong, unless there is a mod I am unaware off.

I know OEP220 goes into the transfer box and central lub rication system but can some one please confirm the correct oil for the gearbox?

No guessing please chaps - a definative answer is what I am looking for.

    Thanks

  7. Umm - interesting question.

Logic would say you should be seated wearing a seat belt but then again armoured commanders stand as do bus passengers.

I guess it would depend on what you were doing at the time.

If the Police felt the need to give you a tug I'd suggest you were doing something they didn't approve of.

Likewise, just driving down a road with your upper body out of the hatch shouldn't give them a cause for concern.

I would advise against sitting on the roof with your legs dangling though.

  8. Hi all.

My old unit is holding a families day on the 30th July between the hours of 1300 - 1600hrs at Bramley training area in between Reading and Basingstoke.

In short, Families Day allows family members of serving and ex-serving members to have a fun afternoon and see some on the kit used by the unit.

I'd like to get some vehicles to the event and wondered if any forum members would like an afternoon out with their vehicles.

It's not paid attendance and children and partners will ask to sit in your pride and joy so if this frightens the pants of you don't offer! Lol

Ex Special Forces vehicles, whether vintage of modern would be very welcome but any thing ex military would be nice.

It would be great to get maybe 5 - 10 different vehicles there.

If anyone can come, please e-mail me on markheliops@aol.com

I will need names and vehicle details for security clearance prior to the event.

    Thanking you in advance.

  9. i read the reasons for givern my imps board why they are not getting involved with hop farm show but why is the head corn show being support by imps if they our both being run by private companys ?? i wish both shows best off luck. i feel the truth will come out why the breakup came about in the future

As I understand it - A NEW IMPS statement, retracting the previous IMPS statement, will be released shortly!!!

Things should become a little clearer - bear with it!

  10. I was told its best not to put the width in on the v55 form and it mite be ok, the last time i registered a fv432 back in 2013, i use the blue mod form for proof of identification, i do not have this for the CET FV180.

I am a farmer, so may try to go down the agricultural registration route if its easier as it will be used on the farm for soil moving jobs

    Regards Andrew

I have registered quite a few "odd" vehicle types with DVLA lately and the best advice I can give you is be up front with them.

The CET is overwidth so register it as Agricultural and STATE the width.

Be sure to stick to the requirements of registering it as Agricultural - passing from land occupied to other land occupied and a maximum distance per week (or something along the lines of).

The days of missing information like width etc will only raise their suspicions and your V55 will be returned to you as unable to process.

The only way you will be able to register the CET is as Agricultural due to the width.

I'd suggest a covering letter to tell them what you are doing with the vehicle.

i'm lucky with the cromwell being such a small load compared to a chieftian, once you go bigger than a comet everything gets complicated. ideally i'd buy an s26, infact john riley lives just up the road from me and has one but he won't part with it, i've offered to share but i think it fell on deaf ears :)

i'll get there i just don't know how or when

A good S26 is going to set you back around the £7000 mark -

I's sell mine for £7500 but only to upgrade to a heavier unit.

You could probably find an old 6x4 Foden for around the £3000 mark but it's not going to be all that, especially if you have to get a ministry ticket on it.

  12. If you purchase an ex-military tractor unit, you can insure it with your other military vehicles.

I have the Scammell S26 tugging a 99 tonne 4 axle for the Chiefy.

The weights I move are classified as STGO so unfortunately I have to stump up STGO road tax.

A normal low loader trailer can be brought for as little as £5K and a tractor unit around the same.

You can get cheaper but you get what you pay for.

Hiring trailer and rigs can be an issue.

For a start, firms don't like hiring their low loader trailers out and they normally ask for an operators licence to hire a tractor unit out.

I know what you mean about wanting to do it yourself though.

  13. It will need a test as you can't run under STGO unless you are carrying an abnormal indivisible load. A 432 will fit on a normal truck so STGO doesn't apply.

(Unless it has all changed since I used to run a wagon!)

Adrian is quite correct on this one.

I have the same with my rig - I can only legally use it to carry STGO loads.

Another point to note is there is no such thing as Private Use when it comes to STGO Regs.

A specific requirement of having a truck used for STGO movements is that the truck is TAXED as such - nearly £3000 per year!!!

At that rate, you may as well put the S26 through an MOT and tax it as Private Use.
