  1. R Cubed,

I used Universal Blue for my fuel pump and filler cap....both have been fine.

Just make sure you do as it says on teh tube and let it go off a bit before remantling (is that a word?), as it seems to shrink slightly as it goes off (from experience  )

  2. As I am taking bits in and out of the interior of my ferret, I thought I may as well sand them and paint them up.

What paint do you use for silver interiors? My initial thought was Hammerite, but I suspect its not the right thing to use.

  3. flippin' heck!!

What is the trick to removing the handbrake cable from the right hand rear brake? The adjuster (which comes attached to the new unit) is hidden below the drive shaft and its impossoble to turn a spanner in that space.

I have lost some skin on my knuckles and spent an hour trying to remove it...I'm sweaty, stinking and need a beer!!

  4. Chris,

its OK..the more I look at it the more sense it makes. The tappet units (according the manual) are the bits inside the drum...although going by my bevel/transfer box shennanigans I could mean alomost anything :|

Seems like a pretty cool design for field repairs though...looks like you can replace all teh hydraulics without even taking the wheels off, although in my case that would only be a temporary repair as I guess the brake linings are stuffed in that wheel now.

  5. I have a leak in the rear offside brake, there is brake fluid flowing out of the brake drum.

From what I can make out, the expander unit is outside the drum? And there is a link to a tappet assembly on the inside of the drum?

Is it possible for the hydraulic fluid to leak from the expander into the drum, or am I going crazy?

    Thanks,

    Mick

  6. I missed you guys, I was away on business, and then could not get to the forum since Monday when I came back!!!!

well, another little leak springs up :-(

I thought it may have been the transfer box after I filled it, but I should have known the fluid was too thin....and it finally clicked when I wiped teh fluid off to see how much it was leaking and all the paint came off!!

Any idea where I can get a tappet assembly (wheel cylnder) from?

Also, I assume (probably incorrectly knowing me) that I can just use dot3 or dot4 fluid in the system?

  7. Thanks Chris,

yes, from what I can make out its EP90 in the transfer box, but I want to drain all the fluids over the next couple of weeks so I know where I'm starting from.

Just wanted to confirm the SAE30 thing, as there are articles that say use multigrade, others that say only use SAE30.....maybe its easiest/safest to stick with original spec. Just wanted to see if anyone had any real strong views on either.

    Cheers

  8. I know this has been covered many times, and there seems to be conflicting advice, so would appreciate some real world lub advice.

What should I be using in a ferret gearbox?

My initial thought is to use SAE30 (I have a Unity motors up the road that does all the mono-grade oils, so no problem sourcing), or do I use multi-grade.

I took the filler off the gearbox, and its low on oild, but more worrying there is quite a bit of oil that appears to have turned to a thick grease (caused by mixing oils?).

How do I get rid of the deposits before refilling the gearbox (remove the gearbox top plate?).

    Thanks

    Mick

ps...I feel like a scrounger at the moment...continually coming on here asking for advice!!!!
