Anybody have Start-up procedure for Reo M35a2 ? tried to drive the CCKW353 but would most likely need to have half a dozen spare gear boxes to get me through a year !!! Anyway looking promising for aquiring a Reo,have got the operator manual from Mark Askew,Inspectionprocedure checklist and other maintenance sheets etc, however need to find 'Start-up procedure' can anyone help ?
-
forgive my ignorance but, im guessing its the bottom runner,
could it be removed and repaired reasonably with a cemical metal ,and replaced the other way up? this would stop most of the water getting in! would be a cheap easy fix.
i have a steel top on my 715 and without looking im sure it could be easy enough????? :undecided:
Hi Jimmy, I may have sourced a Reo in Norfolk way, Near Attleborough actually, that has a soft top so may be able to get a 'hard cab' from Marltrax
-
Hi Jack we have a couple of copies at Aeroventure £45! a big comprehensive book I had to get a copy just to lay the demons to rest ! ISBN1-870067-71-1 edited by Gordon Ramsey published by After the Battle

Such attention to detail ! I wish I had that skill ! Welcome to a very newcomer friendly forum ! (do you do commissions ????)
-
That depends on your skill , if you are good at welding and grinding should be no problem, i should think there are very few people on here with hard cabs and even less who have had to reapir them , steelsoliders is the place to find out .
rgds
bob
Thanks Bob,
no not very good at welding but have a few at the museum who have offered to help me out, I will be left to do the grinding cleaning up and painting, I was shocked that the gent had let the rear cab window track get into such a state,is the rear panel alloy or steel ?
-
Hi Johnh
Any bits i need for my General i get from Marltrax as i maybe just as easy to replace than repair.
boomboom
Ok let me word my question differently ? Is the repair simple ? are the parts easy to get is it a big job ? I certainly would expect to replace rather than weld etc, just asking for some guidance, as I know the prospective purchaser just wants to play, I will be left to fix it !
-
Anybody had to repair rear window track in hard body Reo ? Have looked at a pic of one with what looks to be well rotted (bottom) tracks for the windows, are we looking at a big job to fix ?
-
Any easier to drive ?
Would 'Allied' do replacement canvas for them ?:red:

Personally I'm not so sure that the Reo is more practical, having worked on both vehicles I consider the GMC to be far better designed and more reliable. As was said previously KISS and it is something that definitely applies to the GMC compared to the REO. This , of course is only my opinion, others may differ but I am speaking from experience.
Is a M54 any more refined or just as bad as a M35a2 ? I trust in your judgement on this seeing as you know plenty already:blush:
I know its a 5 tonner and bigger but any good ?
-
Just a thought, but have you tried Marltrax ? Martin Cross mentioned them when I was hanging my nose over his Reo, we even considered keeping the workshop body as storage space at the back of the hangar !! and getting a cargo back etc

Web-sites are wonderful things !...apparently ?:cool2:

Hello John, it can get a bit much sometimes though. On the Dagger MRX last month we had Chinooks at 3oclock in the morning dropping troops and doing medivacs on the hill just behind the house. This went on for about an hour or so, wasn't worth going back to bed after that. Three cabs in total, two dropping of, one on medivac. Just to add insalt to injury, they also flew with Apache and Lynx top cover. All they seem to do is fly round and around for ages. The MRX ran for two weeks non-stop with halos playing a large part of it. You get to see some great stuff on these MRXs, but hell it don't half make you tired and very grumpy, just ask SWMBO hehehe........
Yes I understand what you mean, It's just Finningley, sorry Doncaster Sheffield Robin Hood don't know what county I'm in Airport seems a lonely place now. If i'm up North Yorks all I see is Tucanos buzzing around like demented gnats (not of the folland type) anyway Great Pics !!:-D

Was hoping to make this, but I am taking a Jet Provost cockpit to Braithwell show on Saturday, and i think I am expected to do car park duty on Sunday (we have the model boat show on all weekend at Aeroventure) but if I go awol.....:cool2:

Hello Brad,
looks like you have your own 'Red ball Express' collection !
nice one ! Oh and welcome (sorry):red:
-
Thanks degsy, I will store all this info ! I think we would be looking more as a working exhibit and use for local shows, rather than the 'promotional truck' as previously thought about. I think we will let the 'museum fire crew' sticker up their tacr and Stonefield, we will stay to true US Markings, and try and get a parking spot next to the waco cockpit !
-
Don't rush in and buy the first one you see unless you are certain it is for you, they built 650,000 of them and there are still plenty around.:-D
Cheers Degsy, the ones I will see are all in safe hands, I am prone to be safety conscious when parting with hard earned cash ! It took me a year before I bought my first aircraft cockpit !
Tony has been very helpfull with practical advice, now I need to get up close and personal with a truck to see how they tick and if I have the knowhow to restore/maintain such a vehicle, hence the dreamy rose tinted glasses remark, I don't want to get a truck and not maintain it to a high standard and keep its historic status.
I know the Reo is a more practical/modern truck but the GMC cckw 352 or 353 is growing on me;)
-
Many thanks for your practical guidance ! Hopefully in the near future I will be going to look at some specimens of GMCs even as early as next weekend !?, and to recieve expert tutoring on the whys and wherefores ! and possibly adjust my rose tinted glasses !

Anybody read the Saturday Daily Telegraph ? a double page spread titled 'Ultimate sale of big boys toys' a two page story on Withams accompanied by three nice pics...should help push the prices up ?
-
Oh dear , what have I started ? Do flat pack display boards constitute a 'load' ?:red: We had started out with the idea of a Reo after talking to people at our aerojumble last year, and had intended to use it for the promotion of the Museum at various local events etc, I had tried to show restrain with purchasing and working on any other projects...like a Lynx. But Jeep and Cheerful came along and I became hooked on Military vehicles:blush: Recently went to See Mark Askew at Jeep promotions Bought a manual on Reo M35 last night, got home read your posts and now wondering what to do !:nut:
I have to say A GMC cckw 352 or 353 does fill me with trepidation to drive, I hear I will have to re-learn to double de-clutch !? a bit smaller than a Reo but it's the history and preservation that I am more concerned with, that is why we labour with love on all our Falklands collection.

Thanks Tony, most helpful:) really appreciate your guidance
