  1. Would anyone have details on the plate / holder (the one fitted with 'PASS' on this vehicle) and when it was in use? I've seen various cmp's fitted with them but i also noticed it on the Bedford QLT's in the film 'millions like us'.

Was it short lived? Was it used on British vehicles or just a few cases?

Any info would be appreciated. 20170729_152331.jpg

  2. Good evening all.

I have a very sickly C42 dynamo which needs some TLC and I have a request and a couple of questions.

Firstly the request....Would anyone have a booklet/copies/scans of the C42 they wouldn't mind parting with as I'm new to the stripping down and refurbing dynamos game.

And the Questions.........What are peoples thoughts on replacing with one of these ammeter dynamo items? and what kind of changes would it entail?

The C42 is attached to a 330 Bedford Diesel lump in my QL.

    Many thanks

  3. Thought there never was a real 633 squadron? Or are you suggesting the old chap wasn't entirely compos mentis?

You're right Sean and on one occasion it was brought to his attention, I thought he was going to go pop!

  4. Right ok gents, got it and many thanks.

Bottom pic is my wagon and top is one I borrowed off the net. I see the roof mounted lights on the RL cab.

Won't be destroying it , but feel a bit better about moving it on and buying/fabricating a new QLD body.

Just have to see how much it's worth now!

  5. Afternoon all,

I have a question. I own a Bedford QL which has at some time during her life had an RL cargo body fitted. Is this a military thing or a post military service civi change?

Reason I ask is that I would really like to put a QLD body on her, BUT don't want to mess something up that may be part of her military service.

She also has a Bedford 330 diesel lump, but think that will stay (One because of MPG, but also I can't afford to change the bu**er!).

    Your thoughts/views would be appreciated.

I know the chances of finding a GC QLD body is going to be difficult at best, but looking at the fantastic work Guy put into his wagon I would be tempted to fabricate my own.

If not a military change then does anyone want to buy a good condition RL cargo body?....... :-D

  6. I suppose I understand, don't like it but understand. Majority aren't interested in anything other then a day out/entertainment.

Just that I see things happening that make me weep, and I suppose that I'm disappointed in a way that people don't see historic items/places in the way that myself and many of us do.

Things have to change and museums have to go along with it as long as they want to open and display.

  7. I had my father's Home Guard anklets and they were brown leather with two buckled straps as the web ones.

So more then likely along the lines of CD or ARP. I do have a black set myself and I don't think they're marked up at all apart from makers etc If I get a chance I'll have a look tomorrow.

  8. The shift from museum to visitor attraction is happening to a lot of museums out there.

Was told that the Assistant Director RAFM was heard to say that people don't go to the museum to be educated, they go there for a day out.

At present 28 million is being spent on RAFM London and they'll have less aircraft on display but a bigger visitor centre with the story of 100 years of the RAF.

So don't be surprised if how we see museums organised/run is turned on its head.

But don't forget it may be in our favour! a lot of kit in storage and they'll need money to do these things! :-(

(Don't get me started on that!!!)

  9. Russell Motors (Les's Dad) bought up tons of ex wd motorcycle stock after the war. They still have loads of stuff in a warehouse. Les is now well in his 70's and also lost his brother this year. The shop is in Battersea and the best time to phone Les is mid am to mid pm Tue-Thur. It's well worth a first shot as I know he still has some 3HW stock. Ron

Well worth a call. Les sorted me out with a few bits and pieces for my M20. Suspect I'll be contacting him again soon for a few more!

  10. A new addition has just arrived, Chassis number QL 43190 so produced in 1945 and looking at the winch gear, I think its a QLB but other more knowledgeable members may know better. The crane / jib is obviously a post war addition. If anyone knows differently I would love to hear as Bedford's are all new to me. I have just always wanted one.

Congratulations Jonathan, welcome to the club!

  11. Afternoon all,

I was wondering if anyone has any wartime pics or info on Bedford QL interiors? Ideally cabs, but also if any QLD & QLT cargo area pics around then yes please!

And if any owners have interior pics of fittings etc then I would be eternally grateful. Going to try and get some major work done on both my QL's and really want to try and get them 'right' (But then don't we all!).

I've been trying to get round at shows to chat and take pics of any I see, but obviously haven't got round them all :-)

I spoke to one chap (Apologies if on here and I forgot your name) who said he thought that the lining on the cab boards etc may have been a green colour, but not an army green more along the lines of an apple green (Possibly even slightly lighter). Anyone have any thoughts on that?

My QLT has some basic panels on roof interior and also the door backs. The QLD has door backs but nothing else.

  12. The patches on overalls is down to you. But I've never seen them on overalls or denims as both were 'working' dress (But I'm not saying it was never done, just I haven't seen any period pics with it done!).

One of the lads in our group does Reme with denims and side cap (REME were a corps not a regiment so more civilised when it came to working standards :-) ).

'Officially' overalls with rank only and beret with REME cap badge.

(British Official Photograph N. BNA.8859 (W.P.)) Picture is one of a series taken at Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers' workshops on the 8th Army front. In Italy as in Libya and Tunisia, REME are doing a magnificent job of work in getting damaged armour and vehicles back into the fighting line with the least possible delay
