  1. Paul that is indeed a dingo vision block. if you want a photo of a DAC one let me know. singe www.daimler-fighting-vehicles.co.uk
  2. yes it works exactly the same way as a ferret: Engine, fluid flywheel, then a 5 speed Wilsonpreselect gearbox with 4 separate bands to stop the outer drum of the 1st,2,3,4th gear spinning etc, then a separate transfer box that alsoincludes a forward/reverse gear. thinking about it, i consider it unlikely that the gearbox was rebuilt with twonumber 2nd gears, as i don’t think they will fit on the main drive shaft ( icould check as i have a complete gear assembly sitting in my garage). If it appears that there are two 2nd gears, iwould bet that the selector operation is not set up correctly and the 2nd gearis not actually being selected despite what the level says. This can easily be checked. Remove the whole of the floor panel at the back of thecar cabin (not the part under the fuel tank) and expose the top of the gearbox. Remove the large rectangular inspection plate from thegearbox which is held by approx. 13 bolts. You will now see 4 mechanisms that hold the gear brakebands. Select 4th gear, you will see the relevantmechanism move to grip the gear drum Do the same for 3rd and note which mechanism moves Same for 2nd Same for 1st I bet when you select 1st or 2nd the mechanism is not moving. it should be noted that the top (5th) gear works differantly and has no brake bands. To get it to operate you need to play with the adjustment to the lengths of the rods connected to the gear selector, adjust the gear rod linkage below the floor where it links through the chassis. You can adjust these a bit at a time untilyou get all bands engaging for each gear.
  3. Hi Paul The dingo gearbox is not used in any other vehicle, the nearest equivelent is the 1949 DB18 daimler saloon car, but this is also differant becuase it includes a reverse gear. I have a large stock of gearbox parts if these are needed to sort out your problem. And can sort you out with a copy of the manual if you have not bought one already drop me a email or PM. cheers Singe www.daimler-fighting-vehicles.co.uk
  4. Yes im up for that, Oh hang on, I thought we already had! Thanks guys for your thoughts, im glad to see that its not just me that cringes when i see the 'hobby' being inadvertently being bought into disrepute. On balance, the MOD, British Legion and major museums and organisers of the Lord majors Show etc frequently use our stuff and I would hope that they support our cause if push came to shove. The WW2 65th anniversary event in Hyde Park & Household Cavalry Pageant some years back was a shining example of what we can achieve given a bit of motivation. I wonder if we will get another opportunity to promote our cause at another show/event in central London in the near future?
  5. Those of you who live in London may have seen in the'Metro' paper a Ferret armoured car being driven by the Occupy Londonprotesters. The car had the 30calbrowning fitted, but the last 4 inches of the barrel were covered. I don’t know if the protesters own the vehicle, or havehired it in, but do wish that tanks and other military vehicles would not beused for these sorts of publicity purposes. I have no political agenda and don’t have an opinion oneway or another on Occupy London. But im sure that there are many people out there who mayconsider such groups to be potentially dangerous and not the sort of persons tobe driving armoured vehicles. Especially with guns attached, as the general public don’tgenerally know about deactivation and the like) As a restorer and collector of WW2 armour, the last thingI want is some kind of knee jerk reaction from the government, that bansprivate ownership of armour. I believe such a law is already enforced in parts ofEurope. So please if you are approached for the hire of a vehicleby anyone who may unwittingly bring our hobby into disrepute. Please think about the possible consequences anddiscourage such use. I invite your thoughts on this subject. Cheers Singe www.daimler-fighting-vehicles.co.uk
  6. Hopefully i won’t need to worryabout disposing of my vehicles for a good number of years. All of my cars run and have beenrestored and maintained to be as in close as an original condition aspracticable. Im concerned that many museums (forwhatever reasons) dispose of vehicles, don’t necessarily have the expertise (ormindset) to look after running vehicles, go bankrupt, and sometimes fall preyto thieves and con artists. One of my vehicles was loaned to amuseum for many years. When the then owner came to collect it, the entireinterior and other mechanical items had been stripped out and lost. It was suspected that the interiorhad in fact been sold! A friend of mine has consideredpresenting restored and running car to the Regiment that originally used it andwith which his father served. However with the state of the MODfinances I would think the chances of the vehicle staying with the regiment arevery slim. And would not recommend this gestureof good faith. In my opinion the MOD accountants willaxe the cost of running or properly maintaining the car. It will then go the IWM, the IWMwill pass it on to the other major museums, they will already have an example ofthis vehicle type and so also pass it on, and it will end up god knows where. The best way of protecting my carsis by selling them to the highest possible bidder! I believe that someone who has spenta great deal of money will be likely to correctly store & maintain thevehicle, if only to protect their investment. Likewise if something goes bang they should have the money to remanufacture the part. Singe
  7. Hi Ive collected a large amount of data on the Daimler Heavy and have published this on the web, see www.daimler-fighting-vehicles.co.uk ive checked my photo archive and have no record of E20204 ( i suspect the E, is in fact an F) its a shame that it is not car F202014 as this car survives and is onwed by a friend of mine. Do you have any photo's of your car in service?, with which regiment did your father serve? would he be interested in writting of his service in the vehicles? thanks for our assistance 'Singe' (happy owner of a daimler heavy and two dingo's)
  8. Alweays enjoyed a visit to the USO area, they made a little noise (but a lot less than some inconsiderate B*****) and Im sure they will be missed.
  9. Lewis I hope you dont mind but ive taken copies your daimler photo's and will be adding them to my own site. http://www.daimler-fighting-vehicles.co.uk/index.html If you could give some details of the dates they were taken, the specific dragoons regiment, (1st RD or 2nd Scotts Greys RD?) what they were doing or where they were. That would be great. They will be added at the following localtion and full credit given http://daimler-fighting-vehicles.co.uk/DFV-File%20Part%20D003a-RAC-COL%20Dragoons.pdf I believe i have the largest unified and collated collection of Dingo and DAC photos anywhere. These are being used to try and establish the service history of the 250 surviving vehicles. And also to record the expolits of those who bravely served in them. Many thanks singe (hello Richard - hope your well)
