  1. This is not a plug for advertising but a question as I am very surprised at the low level of response from UK vehicle buyers. I have just renewed adverts for 2 of my vehicles, a Saladin and a Drops, which I am sure are competitively priced and in good condition, but have received a low level of interest from the UK.

We often see vehicles advertised for silly money as people try it on, but I have genuinely tried to be reasonable with the prices quoted in the adverts.

It has amazed me that there is so little response from buyers in the UK, or is there really that little money around for post war vehicles?

    What do you think?

I've been eyeing your ad for weeks now, have had to stop looking as its depressing me. I think for the quality it is well priced, there is a much cheaper saladin being advertised at the moment too, but looks not so good. But for someone like me looking for both vehicles (although a foden drops is the ultimate) then its a really good combo.

Just one issue.... my entire factory burnt to the ground this time last year so no spare cash until way after rebuild is over. Best of luck selling it but secretly I'm hoping you might re advertise next year sometime...... :)

  2. i used to have one of those penthouses went away for repair and haven't seen it since that was about 10 years ago,the stitching had rotted away and it was falling apart.

mine is off being measured and copied by another forum member, so there might be some available soon.....

edit: I mean my penthouse tent btw

  3. Just thought I would update this thread as a matter of interest. We were very proud of my uncle who was invited to a "do" at Buckingham Palace recently as a veteran of the war.

Prince Andrew had a chat to him and asked a few questions about his medals and cap badge. Its an important thing that we take the time to say thank you and to remember. And to think, until recently, he thought people wouldn't be interested in what he had done.

  4. Wow great response, thank you all.

With regards to the accumulators, I don't seem to have much help with the steering if the engine is off, but it is okay when the engine is running.

The leak was a growing puddle of oil rather than a pressurised spray, and it seems to be coming from one of the pipes that run to the accumulator next to the rear seats. The pipe seems to be about 9.5mm but it has been painted many times I expect.

What grade of pipe should I be looking for as a replacement?

  5. Hi all

The Saracen developed a leak in one of the copper pipes running along the fighting compartment wall to the right of the drivers seat, however, it only leaked when the engine was turning. I thought the system was under pressure the whole time due to the accumulators?

Does this mean that when I come to change the pipe there won't be any pressure in it?

    Thanks

  6. Well, the gearbox seems to have been in a neutral position, although not sure.

The issue with starting her is that the fluid flywheel is very empty due to a leak and batteries a bit flat, so not too bad.

  7. Hi

We recently had a massive fire here at work and while I was dealing with fire officers a couple of mates dragged the Saracen and ferret out with a tractor.

Unfortunately they don't know about these things and I found that although they say they didn't go very fast the transfer box was still in forward gear. They were towed across a soft ish field which might have helped.

The ferret seems to drive okay although I've only crawled it about 100m back into the sheds (that survived) but the Saracen will need a bit more work to get her started.

How do I tell if there is damage to the driveline without driving it and poss causing more damage? Is it probable that damage has been done?

Like I said to my mates I'd rather a tractor joint was written off than the whole thing in a fire.

    Thanks

  8. Hi Rob

I live in Devon (Morchard Bishop) if that is any good, I am an ex army mechanic and have worked on V8's albeit the Landrover 1 Tonne. I was working in the trade (HGV side) up to ten years ago when I did a side move to the dreaded H&S before taking early retirement, if you dont live to far away from me I maybe able to pop up and we can both tackle it?

    Regards

Good to know there are other Devonians about. Was beginning to think I was the only one. I live just the other side of Winkleigh.

    Cheers

  9. Hi all

Well I'm so busy and will be for the next goodness knows how long that I need to get someone in to change the seals on my fluid fly wheel on the Saracen.

If I start it will drag on and bits will go missing, also I won't get any use from the old girl this year.

Can anyone recommend someone for this joyous job? I'm in Devon so if someone wants a holiday????

    Cheers

  10. Hi All

Its the nephews prom (didn't know we do that over here) and he wanted to arrive in the sarry. Not holding out much hope I took her out of hibernation (started right up in a second) and took her up to the local garage. Actually didn't get that far, only got three miles.

She was driving really really nicely and I was thinking this is good! Then smoke started coming up from in front of me. I know the exhaust manifold needs a repair but as she heated up this got alot worse. I've got the cover off the fluid flywheel housing at the mo. because I think I have a slow leak here. Anyway, after stopping for a few minutes to check on the smoke she started but ran roughly, just up the road smoke was really bad so stopped and then she wouldn't start at all, just turned over. One hour later I drove her home running okay to start with then bad towards the end.

    Conclusions.

1... when shes good shes great.

2... the exhaust needs doing and this added to smoke

3... fluid flywheel needs a pressure test and smoke is leaked oil maybe built up over the winter vapourising in the heat.

4... getting a bad case of vapour lock in the fuel pipe. when stopped the petrol in the pipe got even hotter. I see that the fuel pipe does rise to the top of the engine then dip slightly into the carb.

5... seems to be getting hot very quickly (left foot cooked) but the temp goes up to 180 and no higher (I replaced the sender unit last year)

    Any comments saraceniers?

    Thanks

    Paul
