restoration Early narrow track sankey trailer
rampant rivet posted a topic in Blogs of MV restorations
Have decided to try and restore my early sankey trailer to go with the Champ I,m restoring at the mo, its a bit ripe and will need a fair bit of work and as it has had a tailgate cut in it at some time I want to use it as a bike trailer whilst keeping its general original looks. Can any shed some light on these early trailers please as I know diddly squat, anyone know where I can get hold of a manual ? Any help / info much appreciated. -

Yes bought a gal of marine clean, gal of metal ready and a largish tin of sealant which I hope will do the job, tank is now clean of goo so tomo will use metal ready to prep for sealant, will have to "borrow" a hairdryer to get the tank dry inside !!. Good news on tent front have tracked one down in Porthcawl today of all places looks a minter too, so will have des res at the shows this year. -

Will seal tank with POR 15 sealant when I am happy all is clean inside still seems to be a lot of loose rust floating about but I hope that the metal prep solution will do its stuff. -

Still sloshing marine clean around tank leaving it in a different position every 8 hrs roughly to try to get the last gunk out, I did not buy the petrol tank kit as such as I did not want the petrol preservative stuff and wanted larger quantities of cleaner/ sealer ect glad I did as I have used a gal of the stuff and have a gallon of of prep to use next. -

Update on using POR 15 to clean tank, well came home from work this eve after leaving cleaning solution in tank for around 18 hrs emptied out horrible brown coloured yuck  have stored fluid prior to safe disposal, bottom of tank now shiny clean :-) have put remaining cleaning fluid in and have turned tank 90degs to remove sludge up sides of tank will continue to rotate tank over the next few days to try to get rid of remaining ick hopefully. -

POR 15 supply all you need to clean, treat and seal your tank I got mine from Frost they supply lots of kit for restoration work, costs around £65 for the kit which is enough for this size tank best to follow online instructions on how to use cleaner etc, This is my first attempt at using this product though my father has used it for motorcycle tanks and it seems to do the job also the makers claim it to be ethanol proof. Am letting cleaner soak over night, so far it has dissolved a lot of the goo -

Have brought the tank back for cleaning this afternoon  how do you start to get rid of 60 years of sludge from your petrol tank ? top tip - stick your empty tank in your car/van and pop down to your local car hand wash establishment the dodgier looking the better and chuck the boys some cash let em loose with the pressure washers and stand clear amazing how much crap came out. Am soaking it with marine clean now to remove the remaining gunge. Will seal tank wth POR 15 later in the week depending on weather. -

Cheers Wayne I must admit I never thought it would run first try like that. Cleaned up ignition casings myself with wire wheel, stencils were made using letraset rub on decals bleedin fiddly job had to redo them a couple of times :nut: bulb covers do the trick glad I went for them in the end ouch !! Caroline a bit dissapointed as she was not there today when I run it, but looks like we will take the Jeep thing out for a spin tomo and will call by to pick up the fuel tank ready for cleaning and sealing. Thats the trouble with taking video only just remembered that my digi stills camera took video so thought it would be laugh to film my mate Neil drinking tea whilst holding pop bottle / temporary fuel container with a drop of juice in (don't try this at home) we did have 2 fire extinguishers at the ready just in case things got a bit lively :cool2: Today has given me a bit more encouragement to push on ready for June. -

ITS ALIVE !!!!! have rebuilt ignition and spent a couple of hours this morning refitting it only to find an intermittant fault in the loom have bypassed this and hey presto !!! all the lights lit up and the starting motor turned over as well so I could'nt resist asking my mate Neil to hold up a temp fuel tank and yes the engine ran virtually on first try and its really sweeeet ! having done so much work to the head, distributor, carb rebuild etc I hadn't much hope in getting it going today but here is the proof A great relief to know all is ok and now I can get on with sorting brakes / fuel tank etc etc Engine running :-D a happy rivet !!!! n -

Saturday was rather frustrating managed to fit shroud to radiator and finally get the complete assembly attached to the vehicle but still had intermittant ignition fault, so have taken out ignition switchboard to refurbish, glad I did really as I found one loose cable one damaged cable plus the light switch seized and have taken out ignition lock to have new keys cut am finding that all these jobs take time and I am aware that June is not that far away but must have things sorted correctly now rather than on the side of the road on the way to Champ Camp :nut: Yes dining table having it again :coffee: now all I need to do is sort out which cable went where !!! -

Now for a bit of a change, had rebuilt the jeep engine a while back and made the mistake of fitting the wrong timing chain cover ! had one knocking around from an M 38 engine which I intend to rebuild as a spare sometime :nut: anyway as the bulk of the work on the champ is in hand thought I,d put right my stoopid mistake, what joy ! So much simpler to work on just got the engine up and running tonight and it dose'nt rattle now :-D -

Yes but only grey anti corosion paint the marks towards the top are from my attempts at filling some tin worm with a bit of mig weld. Will not gloss it untill near the time to fit it to the champ due to risk of damage. rad offered up on Saturday -

Looking good, you can refurb my electrics if you like I think you are going about your project the right way, I am constricted by a deadline to have the champ ready for the end of June 2012 gathering of 100+ champs at champ camp in the UK had I more time I would have removed engine and rear body to do a more thorough job though I am rebuilding the braking and fuel systems and have done a top end engine and carb overhaul plus having anything that can be removed shotblasted. Good luck with your project I am sure it will be credit to you when finished. RR. -

Call by for a cuppa and I,ll tell you about the paint I have a house full of painted panels at the mo and a very understanding wife :nut: I have some engine paint left over how much do you need ? can be sprayed or brushed and is quick drying, from memory I found a small pot of it on ebay will have to have a look. DBG 224 from jeeparts gives a nice finish, easier to use than matt paint to my suprise. -

I used Buff anti corrosion primer by Firwood from Jeeparts UK also DBG from them too I've used their paint on all my restorations, which reminds me to pick up another gal of DBG when I go up to Malvern, deannos grey etch is good too. -

Glad that you are sorted with blasting I just get them to blast and prime for me, the first lot of parts I supplied the paint and paid ££££ to help keep the cost down more cost effective if you give them a whole pile of stuff. I have no experience of the powdered zinc spray but Dave coates has just had a landy chassis done by them and seemed happy with the cost and finish. Before after -

Busy day down the shed today managed to refit the air cleaner, oil filter, carb and the vac tank for the wipers, had hoped to do more but every job seems to that much longer to do on a Champ compared to my Jeep, have brought the radiator back for refurbishment having flushed it out.
