Hi Mark, welcome! I hope it is the advert about HMVF needing our help that is paying off. No, it is not another Mark, just me remarking....

I finally got round to doing that troublesome left centre bevel gearbox oil seal on the front drive shaft. It was a heck of a battle getting the drive shaft off without removing all the floor panels. Well, only one circlip is busted, the shaft is off and the new seal is fitted. Now for the assembly of the parts again. Me thinks, maybe I should do the rear shaft seal as well....

Hi and welcome to the forum. Photo's are always a winner, so please do post some!

Very welcome and please do post lots of pics! I am especially interested in Saracen pics....:cool2:

Been following this interesting read and challenge! Good news at last and please load the video!

Welcome! I have also a huge respect for these vehicles! There were used as bases for troop carriers in the old South African Defense Force in the Border war on the Namibian border with Angola and were called "Buffel"'s

What is the color of adrenaline? It is the color in your underpants when you see the runway through the fence from your glider's cockpit.....
-
This is where it cracked
The whole assembly tries to move when I try to turn the steering ( Engine not running)
I suspect one of the joints are frozen. Can you loosen strategic ball joints on the outside near the wheels to see if the wheels turn independantly?
Another point, if that weld broke while stationary, there is no hope it will last while driving. You will have to find a replacement part. Pity!

This guy did an outstanding job with his collection of albums on different MV's, http://community.webshots.com/user/simonchong100?start=126, here must be 50 or 60 different albums on a large variety of vehicles. This is an example; Quad Gun Tractor http://news.webshots.com/album/551204905pxRdcE, Churchill MkVII http://news.webshots.com/album/582758083IUjFTu, Sherman Mklll http://news.webshots.com/album/580809355haZAMy

I found this photo when trawling the web and it may be my Saracen (right at the back of the photo). The regiment and time seem to tie in with the record card!
Another pics from the same album, taken in front of a Saracen, this one's number seems to be 8X BA XX http://community.webshots.com/photo/fullsize/2284278040034109588Yactrm

This is the best I can do for a pic at the moment and yes these are certainly not fuel efficient.Garry.
Nice truck! The South African Defense Force also used to have them and were eventually phased out in favour of locally maufactured Maguris Deutz troop and load carrier versions. The Bedfords were fondly called "Vasbyters" by the troops, an afrikaans word referring to the truck's endurance and tenacity.

Can you tell me where on the rebuild thread, there are 11 pages
This is where it started, http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?16817-Saracen-Build-up/page38, do you require a copy of the gearbox adjustment section?

High all
Was running the Salute Show in Dublin last week
Worked my ass off to get the Saracen ready
Started engine
no drive
Gear change pedal doe's not appear to work, dos'nt feel right. refurbished box
Was i supposed to release something inside?
Fox gives different pedal return heights for different gears, no change in Saracen at this time...
Again help please
Hi Protacman, I had similar problems on my sarry, it was stuck in third gear. I used the manual but Richard had to bail me out eventually. There is alittle bit of a write-up toward the last posts on the Saracen Rebuild thread under the British Vehicles section. You do have a manaul fot this adjustment? I could forward you the related section if not.
-
Paulo, Alaskan did a BIG conversion which is a resounding sucess. His thread is here on British Vehicles somewhere.

Great stuff and thanks chaps, these are good leads to pursue!
Is it time to do another call for Saracen photos for the gallery?
You bet! It sure is, seeing that over 1800 have been built, the gallery is looking rather bleak with only a couple featured! I downloaded quite a couple of pics from the net for my own use but copyright prevents one from posting it to the forum. Pity!
-
Hi Alaskan, good to have some feedback from you, your sarry is looking really good!. The mileage done shows what a good job have been done. And sponsors! You sure can organise!

There you go, this was a photo taken last year. As you can see it needs a lot of work but I'm getting there little by little. Currently the turret is off and I giving it a full refurbishment. Is there a Saracen gallery on this site?

Nice pic! Quite a big shed you have for her. There is one under British Vehicles but the thread has not been for used some time.

FVRDE visit to SA 9-25 May 1956 here's a taster.
Thanks Clive, much appreciated! I going to enjoy this!
-
Probably not, these were all in South Africa in 1956 :-D
The history bits will then be especially interesting! Chances are very good that it could be saracen 88's! I guess on the first 10 or so were not 88's, but for the rest, I have yet to see a non-88!

Feeling klnd of sorry for myself, old-age memory let me down! Again!! I put the oilseal back, fitted the nuts, tightning them to their original positions and feeling quite chuffed with myself:yay: I had previously removed one sleeve for more maneuverability and put it down on the floorboard next to the main gearbox.
So, I start assembling the forward bevel box's driveshaft and sleeve. Then I remembered the sleeve still was not fitted. So I disassemble again, that done I remembered the old broken circlip was still on the shaft and it will interfere when fitting the new circlip. So, after a half an hour battle, the circlip is off and the assembly process starts again. The sleeve fits relatively easy and another half an hour later, the new circlip is fitted. Great, now for the other end. So on turning around, guess what, here is the other sleeve, still waiting on the floorboard to be fitted......:banghead:
