1. OK -- here it is!

You'll see from the data plate that it had a base overhaul 10/75 at 34 Command Workshop and as there is only a very thin single layer of paint on it, I guess it didn't do much work before disposal

From the vehicle data plate 82BA37, this is another Saracen not on the register that I have been building over time, so time goes, the list grows!

  2. Hi Nic,

Same oil as Ferret in the hubs and bevel boxes, and transfer box.

    Richard

Congrats on your purchase! It is as exiting as a new girlfriend! Hope to see many pics!

I picked up somewhere with the more modern variety of gearbox oils that it needs to be of the older GL4 variety. Apparently when using the GL5 version, it has severe detrimental effects on brass in the gearboxes. Richard should defitely have some info on this. I tackle the "google" thing to see whether I can locate the article again.

  3. pic of fuel tap, in 'reserve' position,... if driving over rough ground, it is advisable to switch to reserve due to the large flat shape of the main tank, and the likelihood of getting vapour lock!:-D

Where does the fuel pump on these sit, on the engine? If so, is there any lift pumps in the fuel tank? Or if the pump sit on the engine, it should have a hard time picking up the fuel!

When I opened mine's fuel tank (stainless steel construction, so no rust), it had two submersible Tokheim pumps, one in the main and of course the other in the reserve tank. One pump was totally shot, and trying as I might, I couldn't get a replacement for it.

So I ended up replacing both pumps each with a set of Facet pumps, each set connected in series because of the voltage. The tank selector switch is already on the console, so no mods there. It has been working fine during tests but it has never been on the road, so that is still an unknown. I have similar Facet pumps fitted to my civvy vehicles and haven't had any hassles yet...:red:

  4. I've just tried my seat and unfortunately you might be stuck with a tight fit. I'm 5 foot 6inches and have just realised that the top of my head - when the seat is forward - is about an inch below a welded nut on the roof, I think i'll be wearing a helmet from now on. When I lower the seat. This is the effect of the seat going down and back a bit, I end up with about 3 inches above my head. If you are 6 foot, I guess that's your head touching the roof. Having had the seat out recently and oiled all the movements, I know it is moving freely.

My thougths exactly! I got an inner (plastic?) from a army helmet that will do the trick!

  5. Hi Montie

Taking the carburettor off is the easy bit I have just spent 6 hours trying to get the nuts on under the front of the carburettor. After much swearing and loss of skin by managed to get back on. Did you take the air horn off before you removed carburettor? I left the air horn on by slackening off the jubilee clips and with a bit of fiddling managed to take out complete.

    Shane:

Hi Shane, yes I removed the air horn beforehand. It does test one's patience, does it not? Oh but that feeling of satisfaction afterwards once everything is fine, makes it all worthwhile! Please do post some eyecandy, man!

  6. Welcome to the forum. Please post lots of pics of your process as I am envious as hell! There is another Pioneer sitting in a scrapyard in our country but sadly, I simply don't have the funds to even purchase it, not even mentioning it's restoration...:mad::mad:

  7. Operation Carb Overhaul kicked off today!

Removed the carb after a battle to get to some of the nuts (thinking to myself how much fun I am going to have when refitting:-D)

The gaskets were intact, although very soft as if they were soaked in fuel.

Now for the stripping to fathom out what is worn (I reckon the needle and seat is one of the offending parts and the worn butterfly shaft).

A poor pic of the part numbers! (Electronic gadgets! :banghead:)

Also took a snap of the ignition module, Standard? Electronic ignition maybe? I have got nothing to compare it to, will have to check the manual again. I will also have to go back to the Saracen 88 article, maybe someting in there?

    Well, wish me luck!

There you go Nic! Please post some pics of your sarry, man along with your progress as you go. You can see how it also helps other chaps with similar hassles if there is some tracking and pictorial footage of the event. This came from around page 31 of this thread.

  8. Re: flywheel repair issues, the job is almost at an end.... Finally!

There have been some trials and tribulations along the way.... One of which is the particularly sad occurance of my dear Dad's passing away suddenly in August 2011... He was to blame for my enthusiasm and inspiration.... I now have renewed vigour and enthusiasm to see the job completed...-it's what he would have wanted,... and I now have his Trojan bubblecar to finish restoring too..... Gotta keep busy -watch this space for all the the stage by stage photos! As soon as I can find my PC which is currently buried in my office....

Intention is to have Saracen running at 'Overlord 2013', blimey! That's next month!

    watch this space!

Good Oily, you're back!! I though you had gone! Updates with pics, mate!

  9. been looking for more

    has this been armoured also?

I stand corrected!! No look-a-like at all!!

  10. What's this? taken in Aden.. certainly not a Pig.. is it?

It does remind me of the South African versions as used by the police , started of with the Hippo, then Casspir and Wolf Turbo. I am not a boffin on these and have never ridden in one as the army never used them, or that I know of.

Here is a link to compare: https://www.google.co.za/search?q=casspir+apc&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=iyJ0UciRHYPIhAeljYHIBQ&sqi=2&ved=0CDwQsAQ&biw=1755&bih=873

  11. Another South African Saracen 88 but with attitude. This one is mounted with cameras and monitors the rioting crowd identifying troublemakers

This spesific Saracen caught fire from a fuel leak inside the hull and the driver died as a result thereoff.

  12. I had to take one of my sarrie's wheel stations off for troubleshooting and it was not so bad. I had to make a couple of special tools though, the plans were in one of the manuals, cannot remember which one, though. There was also some write-up on this episode in my saracen rebuild post, with pics of the tools and the "procedure"

  13. South Africa is full of them but they are being converted back and sold. They were based on the Unimog chassis as APC's and were a firm favourite with the troops as they were very land-mine resistant. You will find loads of pic on the net.

  14. I tackled the sleeve again this year. The newly fitted circlip from the previous round came off quite easily, using the "specially manufactured tools" and a lot of brute force and ignorance. The front sleeve and shaft was disengaged, DSCN1801.jpg

    slightly repositioned

,DSCN1799.jpganother new circlip fitted, (they get busted in the process taking them off!), slided the rear sleeve on that was forgotten during the the previous round

    DSCN1802.jpg

    and the shaft reinstalled

    .DSCN1805.jpg

    This took five painful hours.

So now when filling the bevel box again and checking for leaks, surprise, surprise! The oil still disappears when filling the bevel box but I can find absolutely no external leak!! NOW WHAT????
