Ok. I turned the steering wheel to the left slightly to take up the play and then held it in place as best I could so it wouldnt move, then grabed the hub at 9/3 position and pushed it in the front and back.
The play is still present in the steering levers/hub.
Does this mean it is the outer steering levers??
-Chris
Ok the above short vid shows the play in the steering levers when I hold the 9/3 O'clock postion of the hub and rock it in and out. I cant see any movement between the brake hub/backplate.
So is it the steering then?
-Chris
The whole hub/brake housing and the steering lever moves together when pushed in. If it was just a hub problem would movement/play only be in the hub and not the steering arm?
So the dowels hold the cap together with the inner gear ring?
I hope my description of the steering play makes sense. I could see if I can take a short video if that would help.
Thanks -Chris
OK wheel is OFF. I'm getting play from the outer steering lever. So when I push the front of the hub in it moves the steering in. Could it be the steering thats loose?
Now, how do I get the wheel hub cover off??
The bolts are out.
-Chris
How do I get the hub reduction gear cover off?? I removed the 8 allen head bolts. The diagram shows the dowels inbetween the cover and the reduction gear annulus.
stuck on the first step already
-Chris
Ok get ready for all the" HELP ME!" posts. I just checked the hub cap allen head bolts and was able to loosen them. I was fearing they would be frozen. I am studying the wheel hub diagrams. I need to get some jack stands.
Can I leave the wheel on for now? It seems like the wheel dosent need to come off unless I have to strip the hub way down to the root.
Thanks for the encouraging advice. I will be posting updates.
-Chris
Yes I have the manuals, but theyre a bit basic in explaining. Can I do this without removing the wheel just to check whats going on in the hub?
being that I'm outta work, I cant afford the airfare, but drinks are on the house:-D
-Chris
So the hub is the most likely problem then? Should I not be driving it? Would I check for this by taking apart the hub? Also is this something a newbie such as myself can repair?
Any Ferret mechanics vacationing in southern California soon?
-Chris
Crap. I hope thats not it. Mine dosest push in and out like that one. Only if the front of the wheel or the back of the wheel is pushed does it move.
Thanks for the vid.
-Chris
My Ferret wobbles around 42mph. which causes the steering wheel to shimmy back and forth. If I avoid that speed I dont seem to get the wobble. I dont have the runflats. When I just up the left side the left front wheel has play in it. I can move the wheel about 1cm when I push it in from the front and back of the wheel. This is also the same wheel that has the sticking parking brake. I have since not used the brake.
What would cause this or how can I fix? All the other wheels are tight.
Thanks-Chris
Yes thanks for the info. Matt, thats the same place I put my extinguisher. What do they say about great minds?
Nice Clansman gear. Im still looking for the top gear for my radio. The #11 ATU etc. Been some on E-bay, but VERY $$ or the person dosent want to ship overseas.
-Chris
I have a question. Would taking the bottom hull access plates off help getting the engine running cooler? I just wonder if the added air flow from the bottom would help. I know when summer comes to southern california I will need all the help I can get keeping the Ferret cool.
Thanks-Chris
The holder I have is really tight also. I took it off once and learned I wont do that again.
I too would like to know where the flare gun was stored. Also where and what kind of signals where carried? I got some WW2 signal flare tins and have them in the bulb box holder near my feet.
-Chris
mine was running about 200F on a fairly warm day. I just recently replaced the hoses and and flushed the Radiator. Mine has usually run under 200 when I drive tho.

heres a link: http://www.ferret-fv701.co.uk/intercoms_&_radios.htm
I went with the black face intercom in my ferret. It was alot cheaper than the ARN and you can sometimes find New unused boxes on E-bay.
-Chris
Thanks for the info. What does the groved knob do? The wire is thinner than the hole. Does the hole red cap come off? Wish my illustrated parts manual had a exploded pic of it. I can figure out most stuff just from the drawings.
-Chris
I got 2 replacent leeds for the ignition coil to the distributor. How does the HT leed, the one that goes in the middle of the coil with the reddish screw out cap attach inside? Is it like a screw in type wire terminal? I dont want to just yank the wire out before I know how it is attached inside.
Thanks-Chris
