As many of you know in january this year i travelled down to dorking to find a covenanter that was buried there in 1943, the full story is in the "dorking covenanter recovery" thread. the tank is now back in my yard in manchester where it will be restored to running condition hopefully or failing that a static cosmetic resto. 

    we did a bit of work on saturday to clear out 3 tons of chalk and make an assessment of the damage caused by it's wartime usage as a training aide for tank demolition. i was hoping some of the damage would polish out with a bit of T cut but that seems unlikely now i can see it more clearly, however i always like a challenge :)

  2. thanks tony it was a little bit chilly even by northern standards but at least it didn't rain!

    tank is now safely in my yard in manchester after a 22 hour day and the resto starts tomorrow with a good clean. the plan is to have a good shufti at whats there and what isn't then put it into light preservation while i find the parts. but i'll start a new thread on it tomorrow.

  3. thanks tony i'll see if they are up for it .

    ian the holes in the tyres are about 3" deep and are there to improve cooling of the rubber as the tyres were seperating from the rims on high speed runs. the cromwell also suffered from this and eventually the final drive ratio was altered to reduce the maximum speed from 40 to 32 mph

     

  4. by the way the british gunners didn't need to move their heads whilst aiming the gun as the 2 pdr had free elevation and the gunner used his legs (assisted by a spring loaded seat) to aim and control the whole gun and mantlet. those early gunners were a special breed
