  1. Excellent find and a great project, Howard! You can see it gets the mouths watering of restorers like Pete and Adrian, which is a sign of its uniqueness.

Yours is the 4th survivor with a 3C1 body I know of. One was in Norway (1st pic; now sold, but where to?), one in Holland (2nd pic, incomplete body, also came out of Norway), and a third in Belgium (current status unknown).

  2. This Hercules bicycle recently came to light after spending decades on an elderly gentleman's attic. When his house was cleared this bicycle was destined for the metal recycling bin, luckily someone put it aside and it is now in the hands of a collector (no, not me).

Noteworthy are the black rims, handlebars, pedals, luggage carrier etc. - everything except the frame and mudguards. To me this is a sign these bikes were built to an austere specification with most of the bits which would normally be chromed were painted black, and the rest in "service colour".

Hope this helps to restart this thread an more information on this subject comes to light.

  3. Tim,

    Sounds like a great buy!

I see Adrian scared you out of the multibank engine :D So what are you going to fit: GM 6046 twin diesel?

There are many technical manuals available, but did you already buy the book The Sherman Firefly by Mark Hayward?

  4. My post should have read, none in the UK, as far as I am aware.

That's correct: none anywhere. DDA Classic Airlines is the first historical airline in the world(!) to carry passengers in Dakotas without exemptions & under regular Air Operator certificate.

Quite a feat when you take into account that the aircraft is a 1930s design which is operated and maintained by volunteers.

I really enjoyed flying with them:

  5. Given that the monthly MMI and CMV titles both replaced (and were a direct result of the demise of) the quarterly Wheels and Tracks following the death of BV, I am genuinely suprised that the market sustained two monthly magazines for so long, given the relatively small interest base.

Bart told me Wheels & Tracks was never a big money maker, more a labour of love than anything else.

Apart from the fact that Bart's knowledge - let alone his personality - was very hard to replace, the fact that W&T was not making much profit meant the publisher ceased publishing it.

  6. Many thanks for posting the pics Hanno.

    My pleasure, Stu.

It would help, if I could post pics !!

Not that difficult at all, just hit "reply to thread" and then a "your message" box opens where you normally type your text.

Above the text box are a number of icons, one of them is a paperclip. Click on that and a new screens opens which allows you to select pictures from your hard drive and insert them in your message.

Give it a try, and if all else fails, I'm sure the moderators will help you out.
