  1. Potentially a sad ending for such a useful tool.

Unfortunately it falls between someone wanting a mobile Generator but preferring cheaper to run modern reliability and vehicle owners not really having a use for it, finding a box trailer more practical.

No doubt someone will use it for a display, I hope so.

  2. Hi Alastair,

The 4.2" mortar seems to be thin on the ground in the UK.

So far I only know of 3 for shore, 2 mobile and 1 infantry and rumors of 2 others.

I have collected a few bits up but this will be a long term project and if I do get it done I will need a Loyd to pull it.

    Peter.

This one was the third mortar trailer I've had Peter and it was nice it had the front tailgate, a friend has another in bits. I know of about 10 in total. The GS is also a nice trailer and very thin on the ground.

Good luck with the restoration a very worthwhile project that will look great behind a carrier.

  3. Yep exactly what I did, drill out the spot welds on the original reinforcement plates and weld the originals onto your new 300 tdi bulkhead. Easy.

I saw the ones on ebay, it did make me smile, I guess if you don't have an original bulkhead or access to them the new repro ones are good. I remember tracing around mine on paper and posting them to another builder...

I'm wracking my brain to think what other small differences in bulkheads there were, need to look at my build photos....this was 12 years ago.:D

  4. Very interesting guys, seems there could be a whole host of things made there just post war particularly if we could take over production of the VW factory and beetle car which has a nice link to the REME museum.

Tony it does make me wonder how many trailers actually have their original wheels, possibly the minority, maybe a puncture was a wheel/tyre swap rather than immediate repair.

  5. ok this is weird. I was prepping my standard 6 stud WW2 Mortar trailer wheels for paint and found these markings below.

I googled KPZ and it brings up a German company making among other things wheels of the type on British WW2 trailers.

So what's going on here? Maybe they were made post war but extremely unlikely, I'm certain they are the original wheels just like all the other 6 stud pattern wheels.

Does anyone else have these markings? What are peoples thoughts or is there a simple answer?

The 6 stud wheels with the reinforcing flutes are the later variant, anyone have these markings on the non fluted wheels?

  6. Reg number still looks like 69 EG 69 to me but could well be FG. Tyres are WD marked Mar 56, could be replacements though. Army Contract number 6/VEH/17396

Tony the mk2 trailers had the raising leg with clamp, mk1 had the pin going through the leg tube. A friend told me yesterday another 10cwt trailer had the mudguard brackets like this but cant remember which one.

    Interesting summation Chris, makes sense.

Richard the hinged airborne trailer sounds very interesting, do you have any pictures?

The trailer tows very nicely, very solid. It looks very 'British' with those razor blade tyres, I'd prefer 6 x 16 on there. :D
