  1. The M240 is just a re-named F.N. Mag/ GPMG.

An GN Mag 58, quite possibly the most numerous and well-used Medium MG in the world, and a GOOD replacement to the horrible m60.

Fadedsun,is the M240 a derivative of the M60? Is the M60 still in service?

Sgt Hartman is pretty cool, though.I like this actor he is believable in this role somehow.I would not like him for a drill instructor though!

It's an FN Mag-58 modified to US specs, but basically the same gun as your GPMG. The M240 is the finest medium machine gun in the world.

The m60 is still in service with some parts of the navy and special forces.

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is rather tame in the movie, the most horrible stuff is left out. Hours spent on the quarter deck going from pushup to crunch position then back to POA back to bicycles and sun-gods...horrible times.

But I got my Eagle, Globe, and Anchor and became part of an elite brotherhood of warriors..so it was worth it. I cried.

I'm not an officer (yet), I'm a lance corporal..

  2. I am sorry..

But I do not think the thin alluminum hull of the CVRT series would offer ANY protections again man-portable large caliber rifles or anything over a .30 caliber weapon.

They would get destroyed by IEDs, even small ones. That's the problem when you weigh 7-9 tons...air portability has it's drawbacks.

And unlike the bradley or AAV, where you COULD survive multiple RPG hits because the vehicle is much larger and those hits might not damage anything critical..the CVRTs are small, so catastrophic damage potential is increased.

  3. Yes,Sir yes. I will do this very thing Fadedsun sir.

Incidentally, which character do you most identify yourself with in Full Metal Jacket?

Everyday I am underneath a 4x4 fixing a bust transmission etc I now think of how you spend your days on the beach!

    Have fun,

    Richard.

    Animal mother or Joker.

My favorite weapon is the m240 golf, it's just a very, very tight squeeze inside the vehicle.

  4. But isn't Full Metal Jacket horrendously inaccurate and a work of fiction?

It's much closer to the how boot camp actually is. You don't see much of the fleet Marine forces, but the last 15 minutes or so was not indicative of how a squad would have worked. The sniper would have been dead in the first few minutes..

  5. I watched Jarhead last night ,I thought it was a fictional story, fadedsun!!!

    I liked it though.

    Liked your poetry too!

Jarhead is as close to the real Marine Corps as Governments are efficient.

It is a fictional story. If you want a more accurate view of how things are, watch Generation Kill or Full metal jacket.

As a member of the American Military, I hereby order you to watch Full metal jacket and ALL episodes of Generation Kill, back to back, no breaks...or I shall take you to the pit :)

  6. I am the group owner. I asked Ian to step in as moderator while I was doing exams a few years ago. I would think the engine is repairable, and the ferret does seem cheap at that price.

The bad gearbox/transfercase don't make it the deal it is seems to be though.

I just want the turret...that's a very rare part in the US.

  7. This one has been discussed over on the Ferret Heaven mailing list. I told the owner it's impossible to comment on the engine untill the cylinder head is removed and inspected.

    You're on their too?

I thought about purchasing it...I talked with the owner today and I'm still iffy. For 6500$ usd, depending on the cost of a replacement engine (at worst case) it could be worth it.

  8. Choppers are great for re-supply and casevac but they are not ground holding battlewinners.

Resupply and casualty evacuation are battlewinners, and so is CAS.

Dont really understand why they are testing a vehicle in its 1967 looking spec, arent they using an upgraded version these days?

On the bottom the vehicle is the same....a plain, flat steel bottom.

  9. Shame they're not allowed to be exported!

They'd surely be worth more than that on the open market.

Probably just the over supply in the US market that keeps prices so low.

If the GL places let them go to exporters they'd see a better price and more money back in Government coffers.

They do allow them to be exported, but it's only by big export companies that buy dozens of trucks, refurbish them, then sell them to foreign governments.

  10. certainly not to the point where we need capital punishment for a crime like this...

Had this happened in the USA it would have been a good-shoot, that is, cops come and take away the dead thug and you would go on with your day.

I have an m4 just for stuff like this...

  11. Are you serious? A CVRT left out like that?

    Great googly moogly....

I'm suprised nobody has hauled it off yet, same for the stalwart.

Looks hacked up though-is the rear deck armor+ missile gear gone?

  12. Wow,FAB! I wish that I could join you someday. Amphibious operations are cool. Is the M4 derived from the Sweet 16 or is it a completely new design? Does the USMC operate M1 tanks or was it a U.S. Army vehicle?

I was under the impression that the United States armed forces had gourmet field kitchens and mobile Burger King restaurants,I never knew they possessed MREs....

Love the pictures and keep up the good work

The m4 is an m16 with a different upper receiver and stock assembly. Other than that it is the same.

We have m1a2s, just as the Army. Ours are slightly different to suit our own operating philosophies.

WE don't have mobile Burger Kings..mostly, in the field, we have MREs. At the larger bases overseas in combat zones-Bagram, Baghdad, Tikrit, etc you have KBR run food services that are EXCELLENT. They serve lobster and steak sometimes :)
