  1. Finally I have started to unpack my slides and have recently started to experiment with my slide scanner.

These scrapyard pictures are of Freeths between Swindon and Cricklade and were taken in either 1997 or 2000. I can not figure out which.

The business operates as Thamesdown recycling.

For the tale of how we figured out where this is follow this link, its worth it. http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?22215-Who-is-this-Chap

Of the two Stalwarts the one with the blue hue to it is 72 MS 71 and a MK 1 and the MK 2 I think is 00 ER 72

Sadly I didn't look at the RL closer.

If I do not get the ID of any of these correct please chime in, I am far from an expert.

  2. Correct me if I am wrong but we dont seem to have a single CVR(T) dedicated gallery. We have many individual vehicles only.

Here is an image from my collection, another Robin, Robin Purgina is the photographer. I would say it was early 1990s but I can't date it exactly.

As far as I can tell this was 00 GM 21 and is a Samson.

Note that the colours of the BATUS scheme have varied over the years.

  3. Here are some images of a Staghound I was involved with. It was located on an old BCATP range south of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada at a place called the Winchester bog.

You can see from the height of the brush how easy it was to walk past it without seeing it.

I went many times, all without GPS. One just had to keep a dead straight line on a certain heading.

It has now been recovered and its end point of restoration is unclear but the Royal Canadian Dragoons have something to do with it as far as I know.

I very nearly funded recovery of it myself, we had it planned and were ready to go but the players never could meet together on one day with suitable weather. In the end a local philanthropist sorted the funds to get it out and I was not around the day it came out sadly.

  4. I have finally figured out a slide scanner I was given for Christmas 2012.

Here is the start of some scans of a Stalwart that is now looked after by the Nick and Paul up at the Cold War Collection in Ottawa and was owned by my work when these pictures were taken. At the time I was co driver of the Stolly at the event but did not at the time work for my current employer. I have more pictures of this machine and will post them eventually.

The event was held just outside Ottawa on the Rideau River at the Baxter Conservation area and we went in and out of the water for quite a while and swam very well. On the way home my daughter fell asleep in the cab against the window, no mean feat in a Stolly.

The vehicle had come to Canada from Budge.

  5. A couple of comments.

Mike, the roll over factor I think was more attributed to the fact that drivers dont get the same feed back through their backsides and drive coil sprung vehicles way too fast. This happened out here at BATUS when the switch occurred and the new season of all coil sprung vehicles entered service on the prairies.

The damage rate was stupidly high and too add to the problem the series windscreen is much tougher being a galvanised steel item and not aluminum / aluminium.

I was told directly in person by a number of senior REME types who I have met who were in service with the vehicles at the time. I can see no reason to doubt that this was the same down under.

Dont forget, Tom Barton, a once senior Land Rover engineer when once asked what he attributed to the long lifspan of the then series Land Rover to replied "The longevity of the vehicle is directly indexed to the discomfort felt by the driver" ie if you get shaken up you slow down.

  6. I did not have the info at the time, so here it is.

This procedure is laid out in the following:-

    AESP 2320 H 100 523 DEC 83 reprinted Aug 93 with amdts 1 to 3 included.

It is all in chapter 6 para 24 + 25 to be found on page 4 of the chapter.

If anyone does not have this please feel to contact me.

  7. So, it is a well known fact that the 1 tonne ambulances were made from soft top GS vehicles by Marshalls.

I understand that obviously they retained their chassis number from Land Rover, that would be logical.

But what about the military registration? I would think that they would be in the XX FL XX range but then became XX GJ XX.

So is there a register of those number conversions?

Were the vehicles previously issued vehicles or were they from a CVD somewhere?

Yes I am a new member of the 101 club and will be asking my question there also.

    Regards

    Robin

  8. The six wheeler in post 936 is a Supacat that looks to have had a fire I might guess.

It looks as if equipment doesn't last long in the military in your country Mike.

What about Hagglunds BV206 units, ever see them? We could use a few parts of them that would be worth your while to salvage. If you find one let me know by email.

  9. Our fleet as you can tell does not get a lot of use.

The Bedford CALM has not been on the road proper since our previous investigations.

Since that time I have been fortunate enough to come into the possession of some quite lengthy manuals in PDF format plus we have a parts book in good old paper format.

Looking through the manuals there is a procedure that involves removing the end caps in the centre of the hubs on the outside. The one lone bolt captures the end of the tracta joint shaft. There are some quite definitive measurements to take and we did this tonight.

Bingo, out of tolerance on the specs. The diagnosed failure in the manual is the thrust bushing is crushed / worn. I have some pictures of left and right, in and out of adjustment, will load them tomorrow.

Our plan is to go check our parts truck and if within tolerance then we will pull the end of the axle off with the hub as a complete unit and transplant it. It avoids the need to drop the whole axle. Much less work.

So I guess next Wednesday night we will measure the parts truck and report back.

I finally feel like we are getting somewhere, as usual, with the proper manuals.

Thanks to those who provided them

  10. I am having some major issues with how the MOD sent the Merlin paperwork. They sent it in a negative format. The page was black and the writing in white, and too boot it was as a screen capture.

My lady Jan has worked very hard to resize and re format it, but is still too big to upload here.

Will be back at you in a day or so

  11. I thought I would start a generic thread about our vehicle at work, it has featured in some threads already but we just received our MERLIN paperwork and thought it appropriate to post it here. There are some who are good at translating them, we would love to hear what it all means.

I'm posting a photo of the vehicle for those not familiar with them.

    Best regards

    BV206 WINTER 2009 EXERCISE WITH CF_edited.jpg

  12. I realise this is a bit old, but I strongly feel that the value of this forum is lost if we don't do our own housekeeping and close out threads.

So the vacuum pot thingy arrived from the dealership, was not the right part despite the CDN Forces cross over part number right off their system to the MB part number, total loss.

Anyhow, last season we started the machine up and low and behold the high idle function now works and continued to work all last winter season. I have no explanation, other than a "Gremlin" might be involved.

What can I say, problem has gone away so we returned the part and carried on.

End of that issue for now until next time . . . .

Thank you to all who tried to help me on this problem.

  13. We have a number of pieces of armour at work and I shudder to think what it would be like to deal with vehicles without the A frame set we have.

The variety of tasks one can achieve in a really safe manner on your own even.

As I near to owning a tracked vehicle of my own it is a piece high on my list to acquire at the same time.
