  1. I remember those very well.

They were a nice bit of Gucci kit that was tolerated by higher powers.

Made by the "silent clothing company" I think;)! They had a certain rustle to them that was impossible to silence.

Were smart and useful and cheap if you knew where to buy them in the day.

  2. As I am sure you are aware you Ferret has a very different set up for a lot of the electrical as it moves back in the vehicle because of the conversion to the Canadian alternator set up.

Rob Love over on MLU forum is a great asset as he is both ex RCEME and an ex Ferret owner himself. He is sometimes on here, I think he is CMPToolman or something like that. I have his email if you need it.

  3. I think for my money I am in the mindset of not destroying the parts you have in any way.

I understand what you are saying about the breathers. I am pondering this in my mind for my Ferret which looks to have the same part.

I think what I am going to do is make a threaded piece with a vent tub but have the tube rise up and turn over with a fuel filter mounted in line so that oil wont come out but air will.

It will be the same as we used on the CVR(W) Fox fan bevel box.

That way I can put the vent back into stock for refitting if I ever want to.

  4. Terry,

Kudos to you for having the daring to ask this question, if not once again for some it seems. I know in our circles we ask it many times a year and kick it around usually over a beer.

A replica pretty much always comes back to "something that wasnt". A restoration has an amount of an orginal in it. How much is always contentious.

The act of making a replica is always of concern if it is intended to deceive for financial gain. If it is displayed as a replica then fine.

A Belgian Scorpion made to look like a British one to stand side by side to a Sabre to illustrate the former being of the same vehicle will only ever be a replica British Scorpion even though it is made of Scorpion parts.

    Think it is fairly simple.

  5. James,

    Great pictures and very interesting.

I am very interested to see someone else using that method of venting, I also went that route for a vehicle but used a much smaller assembly. Each to their own. Once you decide a vehicle is not going to swim it makes life a lot easier.

    Thank you for posting.

  6. Andy,

Thank you for the kind words.

I looked at the example that was sent to me by email photo and I really did not like the length of weld possible between the shafts and the C shaped attachment pieces that mate to the horns of the BV206. That was a major issue for me. By using a square section HSS (hollow structural steel) I could make a much better fit up.

The need for the hinge was spurious at best for our usage.

I also did not like the geometry of the cross members.

I am a bit of an old stick in the mud and really prefer to use E7018 1/8th" electrodes for a lot of projects, 3/32nd" for smaller stuff. The rod is such a versatile all position premium low hydrogen product it is hard to beat. Pretty much all the joints are heavily V grooved to ensure 100% penetration. Add to that my MIG is still in need of repair after being driven over by a Stolly, but that is another story.

In the end I used substantially heavy cross section material which is not really apparent until you lift it. I did have a lot of problems with deciding on how I was going to weld the lunette piece into the frame but eventually came up with an elegant and simple solution that is in fact hidden by the latter addition of the side arms being welded to it.

The vehicle that this will recover has to be pulled out over a distance of 25 miles, so I had every reason to want a bullet proof product.

    Robin

  7. The recovery is on hold for a few more weeks, but in the meantime I need to get this project finished so I can go at any time and also so I can bill out for the work done.

There have been a few changes to materials and design based on a number of criteria that I'm not going into here right now.

Suffice it to say that I am happy to say that in my opinion my offering is stronger and more robust than the example sent to me in the previous photos.

    Here it is

  8. Dear John (aka Antar)

I applaud your determination and am jealous of your operational ownership of the CET.

I think it is great you have managed to become the SME (subject matter expert) on the machines. You are lucky to have the time the money and the space to do it. If we were ever to buy one it would be through someone like your self who has a decent reputation and has gone through it and scaled it with parts accordingly.

Out here we would just not take that risk.

I do have a soft spot for any machine that worked, ie Eager Beaver, CET etc.

  9. Greetings Pekka,

Can I suggest you post your questions on Maple Leaf Up also? If you are not already a member then perhaps I can post them for you as there are delays in memberships.

Please tell us more on how your Canadian Ferret made it to Finland.

You will likely be able to buy the oil tank from the UK easier than from here, but I have one that I could sell if you cant find one in the UK.

I also know Colin, and my lady and I own 2 Canadian Ferrets. I have threads on here.

Look forward to your posts and pictures of your vehicles

    Regards

  10. Dear 16SVT,

Sorry I would use your name, but it is not visible.

I think you are asking as to why more have not been purchased and now privately owned and operated and maintained and on the show circuit. Is that what you were asking?

I know we at work have looked at them but I have told management that I think they are a dead end as far as spares and that it is big and will take bigger equipment to move it around compared to the CVRTs, that did not stop us getting a Stormer and a 436.

But honestly for me the biggest fear is it becoming an orphan for spares, we have one of those already, the CVR(W) FOX. That comment seems to have hit home, so we don have one despite some very tidy examples coming out.

  11. As a welder I have used the commerical used machines up here, the Nelson stud welders, just like in this video

The cup put over the end is the flux that is needed for the weld.

Just need to prove your settings for a full penetration weld. Bigger welding supply companies will rent them out. I may be able to get you the loan of one Nick as a demo, or I may be able to get a manufacturers rep to come do it for you. I still have some contacts in the industry. You may have some at your former employer over in the east end of town.

    Robin

  12. I have had to go at this 14 ways to Sunday, re-typing it a number of times in different formats to get the KB size down.

    Hope this works

If anyone can sort these out and interpret them that would be brilliant. This has driven my patient lady Jan and myself absolutely potty over the past few weeks.

  13. Spent some time drilling some holes today. I have not finalised my fastener choice for the hole yet but the 3/4" size is common enough. As there was no fasteners shown in any of the picture I received I feel free to as lib on this part.

I am mixed as to what paint route to go. I know ours will be rattle can green, but I thought I might give the one I'm sending the the Cold War Collection guys a nice garish colour, if they read this they can make a colour request otherwise it will be my choice! Besides, they have a whole body shop operation associated with their parent outfit so they can change it in a heartbeat. Maybe I should send all three to them to paint, now there is an idea.

  14. So, I started this thread very casually a while ago but now things have changed and a friend of mine has had an "incident" with his Bv206 about 25 miles beyond civilisation and needs to haul it out.

I have been asked to make an A frame for him and the Cold War Collection guys up the road want one and we might as well have one at work also, so that is 3 sets to be made.

The big thing to understand is that a Bv is a sod to tow over any kind of distance, as any casualty vehicle is, with any degree of safety, especially when you have down hill sections to traverse and the dead vehicle wants to run you over. Also, with this set up a single operator can recover a dead machine on their own.

The lunette is a bought in item costing me $30 retail inc taxes, which is cheap I think and it has a 5 ton rating.

The C shaped pieces were made over a jig fixture and some heat, the soapstone markings for the holes were done after the bending.

I hope to make 2 A frames over this weekend if all goes well as it is a long weekend here (Bank Holiday).

  15. I can't vouch for what percentage of alcohol you get in yours, but over here our winter windscreen washer fluid is highly alcohol based and worked perfectly with Tamiya acrylics that I used.

I would say that the basic Badger airbrush with single stage was fine for what I did in 1/35 but then i'm a hack anyway.

The only thing I did was put a foot control pedal in so that with model in one hand and brush in the other I could turn the compressor on and off easily without dropping things. One of my mates used a sewing machine foot pedal on his as he didn't want a tank.

I only ever found very humid summers had any result as far as water in the line, but that was out here.

    Here is what I produced.

  16. There then followed a musical interlude as Rob rode the running board on the drivers side and steered and I backed the tractor the 400 yards out through the field towing the ambulance from the rear tow hook and around to the end of my driveway to be left for the tilt and load tow truck on Monday.

Once we got back to my driveway Rob cleared the roof of snow and took the loose bonnet off and stowed them inside and secured the rear doors and drivers door to be safe down the road.

It all went very smoothly and with absolutely no drama and no damage to the vehicle or our tractor. the best thing is the mosquitos were not biting today as it was minus 17 degrees C!

I am not an M series vehicle kind of guy but it was good to see the vehicle saved and going to a good home. It will take a while before Rob decides whether it comes apart as a spares source of gets restored, once all the junk is taken out then a more thorough survey will be done.
