  1. thanks for that as i said wishfull thinkin about the bearing if only it was that easy!! managed to get the jib cut back to place on today and lifted into position looks great sat on the top of what was a big space i was told that as an emergancy (in the event of rear propshaft failure) it was possible to remove the rear propshaft and run just on the front axle obviously not good practice however if i could get it into 6th gear and if i still had vibration it would eliminate the rear prophaft altogether proving that it may not just be a case of (they all do it) well thats a job in the future if anyone knows of a good explorer gearbox for sale plz let me know p.s looks like that pioneer from the north east has been sold bet ar kid really bummed he quite fancied a look at that
  2. well i spent this weekend looking into the vibration in top gear rear prop looked good as its been replaced just before i bought it what i did find was that the rear drive flange had movement on it possibly taper bearing that just needed nipping up they call that wishfull thinkin dont they. anyway removed the drive flange nut which needed a 4' pole,, and found there was some slack (wear) on the splines. why is it whenever you work on a scammell a simple job is never that simple i had another flange on a dead gearbox we have tried it on and whehey still got slack so must have wear on the shaft i found some stuff we sell in our locktite stand that read repairs worn shafts and threads up to 0.5mm so gave it a try i worked ok on taking up the slack has anyone used this stuff before ? or am i just wishfull thinkin again i will let you know next i checked the engine/gearbox mounts can these still be bought from somewhere??? as the 2 rear engine mounts are worn out and the gearbox top mounts look like theres nowt left but dont want to strip them out to check until i know of somewhere to obtain them any advice? next job is to get the jib i found off the workshop floor and onto the body of the scammell i will start this tomorrow when i get some burning gear at work i will have to recover the jib from the frame its on and graft it to the explorer body not a good job !!!! pics will be posted tomorrow on how im going thanks chris

  6. hi grit in eye we did some research into the cummins l10 engine when we bought one your conversion is not what i was expecting at all have you used the twin plate clutch? the way i was going to fit it was by using the single plate clutch on the l10 as this matches rear bellhousing fitted to the meadows petrol also with a different clutch plate it would also marry upto the meadows input shaft without much modin the metalastic should go straight back on the worst job i thought would be was front and rear mounts to get engine in line perfectly but obviously this has not been put into practice yet and was measured up to be fitted but i thought the single plate clutch was of an iso standard as is the meadows engine so on paper should go straight on:coffee: fan would also need to be raised thanks chrisps keep lessons coming its always good to share information
  7. how do whats happened to the jib?i know a man after one thanks chris

  11. hi all just to clear things up meadows on lpg is great have you ever gone to your petrol explorer pulled the choke /wound for a while then a long splutter then firing into life the meadows starts great when warm sounds lovely but at huge cost big steve and i were going to convert his to l10 howerver we went lpg instead best move ever on the bottle returns equivalent 9 to gallon price wise no noisey diesel no spluttering 1 turn shes away not even a puff of rich un burnt petrol from exhaust after we converted it i was so impressed with the results i even changed my mind on petrol explorers if one had come up instead of the diesel one i bought i would have jumped at it,, but it never i have noticed a big difference with my engine conversion 680 to 690 turbo i though it would be a straight forward swap no chance differences are rear of sump wall will not house 690 oil pump exhaust no chance struggled to even get an exhaust in inj pump doesnt rev as well wwaterpump and housing different complete strip of everything rear inc bell housing plate to metalastic coupling swapping fly wheels everything different mounts/fuel lines/returns/side covers put it this way by the time you finish the new engine is almost the same colour as the old one not just abolt out bolt in job everthing is tight and heavy but it was well worth it it now up hill sounds like a jet pulling up the runway and in the 28 miles i travelled my missus followed in the car and she said on her speedo it was running along at 43 mph so i think the 690 is perfect however vibration of gear gate at that spead well just a hase i did think about a full conversion to l10 however i though at the time a 690 was the way to go as it should just drop in HOW WRONG I WAS!! cheers chris

  21. hi steve i joined up too lets enjoy chris
  22. hi everyone after reading the pages and looking at pictures for some time now me and ourkid have both decided to join up alot of info is available on here, which is very good to see and more info is often added as some of you are aware after reading on threads i recently bought a scammell (after many years of wanting one) it was advertised in cmv mag and needed some work, price was haggled on as scammell had been for sale for some time and needing space the owner decided to sell for a very reduced price so a low loader was sent to watford to return the scammell home to barrow in furness when the scammell arrived it didnt look that bad and after 2 nights work air tanks/wheell arches/trackbox and a bit of wiring the scammell was taxed on red and on the road awsome!! a couple of short journeys and some light off road use went by and i decided to take it further out of barrow for a run i regretted this as to my horror the engine and i quote from one of your posts went SNAP CRACCKLE AND POP!! then the scammell was retired to the back of the shed for a couple of weeks i then removed the sump and realised the engine was scrap all the caps had spun the shells and welded themselves to the crank and yes it had oil and water in !! i began the search for an engine found a few 680s for 1500 + vat maybe this was going to become an expensive scammell after all... then looking at the old add in the cmv i saw a 690 turbo for sale for 500 but it was in bournemouth oh dear i drove down loaded up and drove straight back what a journey at this point i had 6 weeks to get everthing sorted for the scammells first show.. 690 turbos ARE NOT A DIREST REPLACEMENT as i had thought lots to change but had to do it for the whistle of the turbo made it to the first show driven 28 miles each way engine great vibration bad hope this post is not too long to get things off to a start with us im sure arkid will give as much info as i have on his what he keeps telling me is a proper scammell just because im jibless and my windsceens are not origional oh and my back body has no boxes but im working on all them thanks guys chris alderson
