Down pipes / tunnels?
Don't understand Lauren. But did you see my second reply to your post on the previous page?
-
This has nothing to do with those balloons designed for bombing America in ww2 has it ?
No you're going off beam there Roy.
-
Balloon/aerostat with signal lamp?- I'm guessing it must have to be high up to get direct line of sight to the IR receiver.
Lauren where were you thinking they would have a receiver?
-
Ok , so the beam or signal is pointed at the destination for troops and if the signal of sound gets broken or interrupted then they adjust their direction until they get a good signal again.... A bit like what bomber command used over Europe ?
I know what you are driving at Roy its not for that sort of purpose. Lauren was so very very close.
-
IR Heliograph that can only be picked up by a similar receiver or relay/rebro device?
Yes Gary sort of, but more sophisticated than that but in a different direction
-
Battleship ??
Andy you've lost me on that one, we are in the jungle

Lauren you are getting complicated again, although the answer is buried amongst what you have said
-
Would this operate in conjunction with another 2 of these
Like triangulation ?
One other device only & one way communication only
-
oooo. How about hot-air signals like smoke signals, or maybe bouncing the IR light from the cloud layer?
Or maybe microwave into the water droplets in the air (a poor mans troposcatter?)
All ingenious stuff Lauren but not that complicated (ah troposcatter & rain scatter used to do a lot of that on 10GHz used to get further than on 2 metres )
-
A means of covertly transmitting orders to troops in the jungle?
Andy
So very very close Andy. So how would the system operate?
-
Wild guessing now...... A listening device ?
In a sense yes, but probably not quite in the sense you mean.
-
A tracker ?
You were nearly there Roy, now you are going off track
-
If it helps the thing on the right contains amongst other things, a concave mirror.
-
A way of marking a route
No its not that Andy, that was something Lauren was also thinking
-
Double hmmmmm........ Japanese...amplified, infra red ..... Remote control.
Yes, yes, yes & no
-
You could mark out areas with either covert burners or ir lamps hat wouldn't be seen to the naked eye. This could find you the safe path or maybe hidden supplies?
Ah I see what you mean Lauren, no its not that.
-
Hmmm. Japanese.....amplified......infra red.....motion censor ?
Yes, yes, yes & no
-
Aha ! Japanese signal amplifier ....
Well there is an amplifier in it. Roy can expand what you mean?
-
Or maybe IR path/mine markers?
Interesting Lauren can you expand on that for me?
-
I've got it! It's a hotplate for delivering food to a sniper in the trees. Obvious really.:-)
Losing the plot now I think
-
A compass. .. I think I am losing the plot in desperation.
Is that a question or have you lost direction Roy? But anyway its not a compass.
-
Strobe light?
Camera flash that would be could be on a pole
Interesting idea Andy but its not that.
-
Clive, I've arrived late again, so bear with me but I don't think anyone has asked if it sends or receives signals.
Often an advantage coming in late & you can sometimes pick up on what has said or not said. Yes receives signals
-
So some sort of signalling device used above tree cover, presumably in the jungle?
Andy
Andy yes

"I'd assumed this was the receiver" In that case you have one well done Lauren! When I re-read it I wasn't sure which way round you had it. Up until now everyone seemed to assume this was an IR source of some sort
