An Armourer friend of mine used to go the the bank in Port Stanley and get loads of each of the Falklands coins, stick them to a piece of rock and then mount it on a piece of wood cut from the rear seats of Argentine Unimogs (just about the only wood there was!). When the folks back home complained that the wood scratched their sideboards, he made a Mark 2 version, with Argenine blanket stuck to the bottom. Incredibly, another friend we worked with had one of his creations at home!

No, they still have the B Vehicle cards. Fill in the attached form and send a cheque off - they came back quite quickly the last time I did one (within the week)

Chris,
To (almost) quote 'The Life of Brian' -'you lucky, lucky...person'!!!!
Most of us would kill for just one 'in service' photo of our vehicles - it looks like you're building up a collection!!
I'm sure someone in the Light Dragoons or the 9th / 12th Lancers must have photos too!
-
Blimey Chris - it's looking good already!
With it's rarity plus all that wonderful history, this will a really special vehicle when it's finished.
Well done for locating the in service photos - I'll keep my eyes peeled for Gulf, Bosnia, Iraq & Afghan photos!

Thanks for that all this time I thought I had a wombat now I know it is a conbat !
Mark,
I'm currently producing a list of known MOBAT & CONBAT survivors. If you could let me have the Carriage Number (CA***c) and dat eof your CONBAT, I'd be very grateful.
I've just bought copies of the EMERS for the MOBAT & CONBAT from Vintage MV Manuals - superb!

I wasn't sure about Mark 2/3s in the Gulf either but the Ferret website has a nice photo of one just above the entry for 00 CC 76 - they look good with GPMG, baskets etc!
-
It could well have been in the Gulf - it would have been a lot quicker to ship it from Cyprus than from Germany / UK but that probably didn't come into it knowing the Army!
My 432's History Card had no mention of it being in the Gulf but it was definitely there!
Your Ferret may have a Merlin record (the computerised version of the old History Card) but you'd need to submit a Freedom of Information request to get one now.
In the absence of any documentation, I'd look for a coat of yellow paint, the Gulf War inverted V and any other markings and the best evidence of all - a photo of it in the Gulf. The Ferret website says a photo of your Ferret is available via the Tank Museum Librarian - lucky you!
Let me know if you'd like you card translated.
Hope this helps

Sorry, Artists Rifles, but I think the plan shows the same as we were told on Sat - the pink highlighted part is 'Digging Living History'
It looks like it's going to be a good venue to me and the W&P team are really working hard, trying to 'get it right'

Bill,
There are similar numbers painted inside the bonnets of some Austin Champs and nobody really knows what they mean! The best guess is 'War Reserve' which means your QL either saw no Army service at all or spent some time in storage.
It's really good you've revealed and recorded what you've found!

What an interesting vehicle - it's amazing the Lance gear has survived!
-
Thanks Wally, I'll try Deepcut - fingers crossed!

Does anyone know if the Austin K9 Army Vehicle History Cards have survived?
I was thinking of writing to the RLC Museum at Deepcut but any information would be gratefully received!
I'm researching 37 BG 31.

All I need is a turret..................!!

Rob,
As luck would have it, I managed to get to Kew today and copied the file about these guns. If you PM me you emial address, I'll send it to you!
-
Rob,
If you can hang on for a month or two, I'll try and copy the file when I'm next at Kew - I'm a bit nearer than you!
-
With that big 'lump' on the back of the turret - a British Firefly?
-
what is the story behind all the Panthers from France?
I could be completely wrong, but I'm sure I read somewhere that the French Army had an armoured regiment, equipped with Panthers, after the war.
Anyone know if this is true or not?!
-
Awesome photos - thanks for posting them!!

It's obviously a personal thing but I too like the Ferrets without bins! Also, as decent bins get harder and harder to find, perhaps we'll see a few more 'Aden Ferrets' being restored!
As a point of interest, the Ferrets used by the Queen's Dragoon Guards and 16th / 5th Lancers in Beirut in 1983 /84 did not have bins fitted so you don't have to go as far back as Aden to 'get the look'!
The photo below shows two QDG Ferrets (with no bins fitted) on patrol in Beirut

Martin,
No problem - I enjoy doing these translations!
Just a thought that if you're going to make up a board for shows, putting the regimental badges on it would be a nice touch (Google image would be the best source!), although I just laminate what I've sent you, trim it to size and put it in a 37 Pattern Map Case!
Matt,
Thanks for the praise - have you been enjoying Christmas too much?!
-
Martin,
Translation attached!
You will need to check some of the dates - I couldn't quite read them on your scan
-
A long shot, I know, but does anyone have a copy of the Ruddington Sale catalogue for 6th December 1966?
I'd like to obtain a scan of the front cover and also the page with Lot 458D on it.
I'd be very grateful if anyone could help with this.
-
Thanks Rob - I suspected they might be hard to find (replicas it is then!)
Just one question - how long are they?
