  1. The recorder has arrived from China surprisingly quickly however the instructions are somewhat iffy to say the least. Written in Chinese English the main point seems to be that whatever is wrong with it then it has nothing to do with the manufacturer and it should be dunked in water:???

Reminds me of Benny Hill's Chinaman skit

  2. Always the way. I had three for sale last year, here, on eBay and Milweb and couldn't give them away.

Seen a similar pattern made by Goodyear today, will see if they're any more about. A chap I spoke with today gets them from Belgium.

In other news, I passed my Cat H test today with Terry Brooks, recommended 👍

  3. Looks like the gearbox will need a good clean inside and out, or are you just going to swap mainshafts?

Plenty of toys there, surprised you didn't come back with the Oshkosh!

Our thoughts exactly Iain, wouldn't like to think of the cost of the Oshkosh if he's asking £28.5k for the old Foden EKAs

  4. Popped down to Dave Crouch's Kibworth yard south of Leicester this morning to collect this colourful gearbox - I wonder if it's the box out of Crouchs old Mili?. Plenty of toys in the yard, those 16r20 Mich XZL tyres seem to fetch a lot of money at the minute.

Both the 8x8 MAN & Oshkosh seem to be set up for off road winching.

  5. Getting a gun to fit the better one and exhibiting it as a test bed would be really interesting. I always think it's a shame that unusual vehicles, often of historic interest, get converted back to conventional ones.

If the ZR registered one, being early (and therefore perhaps historically interesting), turns out to be a reasonable proposition would it be practical to keep the nice one in test bed form and restore the ZR reg one as an early gun tank?

I'll second that, very interested to see this progress.

  6. Yikes! That's quite the failure. :wow:

Lucky to have a 'new' box within relatively easy reach; that'll definitely save some time over having a new main-shaft machined.

Certainly is, at least I can have a good look at the clutch and hopefully never have to take it all apart ever again!

  7. Box now out the pit, in the photo of the open topped box we've found the gear for 4/5th just spins with no drive transmitted when the selector drum slides onto it, unlike the rest of the gears. In the photo, these are the smaller gears inbetween the two larger ones on the right. Spigot shaft is to be removed next to hopefully see why this is. A spare box has been found, if required, & complete with transmission box for £600.

  8. Afternoon all,

Progress on investigating the loss of 4th & 5th gears. Box is now out as you will see, selector forks & assembly seem in good shape so far. Workshop think it's to do with the splines on the main shaft. The transmission jack is the lowest it will go in the pit but not low enough to get the box out from underneath, thoughts are to lift the front end of the truck up & slide it out so it can be palletised ready for investigation & repair.

Clutch will be checked & probably replaced. 17.5 hours labour thus far.

A big thanks to Iain Crosbie & co for the support.

If anyone knows of a trusted gearbox repairer please let me know?

    Update to follow.

    Nick

  9. That's how it was back in the day. We always referred to the gauge on the side of the tank first thing as the cab gauge was always reading low above half a tank and then high below that level. One of the idiosyncrasies of the Militant. :)

As regards the cab - I'm more worried by the temp gauges behaviour - keeps flicking over to max deflection (overheating) even if the engines only been running a mixture or two. Either a dodgy sender or a dodgy wiring connection perhaps?

You've reminded me I need to sort one of the temp gauges on mine, once the gears are good again 🙂

The old old girl has come up good with that splash of water
