  1. I think this photograph may have been taken in Marshall's yard not long after Antar had delivered the Scammell. Bernie was using his Militant MK 1 gun tractor to shunt the Constructor into position to enable a machine to lift it's body off. This would have been the body originally fitted to this Constructor and not the one Bernie later replaced it with. Does anyone know what happened to this body ?

  2. The previous owners certainly made a nice job of restoring her Tom ! Have you any details or pictures of her condition before the restoration ! Oh and keep posting cos its good to see so many survivors ! :-D

There is a photograph of this Constructor on Antar's (John Riley) post No. 361 when it was owned by Antar. Bernie Jones put this lorry back on the road in the condition you see it in the preceding posts and it is a credit to him. Apart from installing an ex Mountaineer Leyland diesel that came with it, Bernie fitted new tyres and extensively overhauled the mechanics of this lorry. I did have a set of photographs Bernie kindly gave me showing the whole sequence of removing the Meadows petrol engine and fitting the Leyland diesel. I think I must still have these 'photos somewhere so I'll have a sniff around and see if I can find them.

I have to confess I was responsible for Bernie Jones coming down with a bad dose of Scammellitis after he drove one of my Constructors at a show in Wroughton, Wilts. Until then, Bernie had been perfectly happy with his lovely Militant MK 1 gun tractor but after briefly driving the Scammell his face took on that crazed look symptomatic of Scammell enthusiasts and he HAD to have a Constructor. Fortunately, Bernie knew John Riley had one for sale and within a few weeks Bernie had bought it. Incidentally,

although the current body is the correct type it is one from another 20 ton ballast tractor that Bernie acquired while he was restoring PSU 439. This second Constructor had a rotten cab but very good body so Bernie transferred to it to PSU 439. When Bernie sold PSU 439 to a Kibworth based commercial recovery operator he included the other Constructor, as a cab and chassis, but without the body that had originally been on PSU 439. Bernie did have this body proping up his workshop roof for a while. I don't know what happened to this body........maybe it's still there. If you're still following all this, the cab and chassis that accompanied PSU 439 when Bernie sold it was swiftly sold on by D.C. and the last I heard it was standing in a field somewhere.

Not that many survivors Andy, maybe only 6-7 really straight ones mostly now with diesels and very few with the original Meadows and an unbutchered body. I'd be very interested to see a few 'photos of Antarmike's mate's newly acquired petrol Constructor on this thread when possible.

  3. the location wouldant happen to be severn vally railway kiderminster would it ?

You're absolutely right Younggun, it was Kidderminster. I know you can tell the location by studying the trees in the background of the photograph. It was an excellent event with a lot to see. Bernie had towed a WW11 anti-aircraft gun down from Manchester with the Scammell and although the AA gun had pride of place on the station forecourt, Bernie had to hide the Constructor out of

sight round the back because it was post-war. Just for you Younggun, here are two more pix taken at the same time. PSU 439 is currently owned by a well known commercial recovery operator based in Kibworth.

  4. Hello Richard

I shall have a word with Mike and see if I can borrow his at the weekend.

    Regards

    Howard

I and, I'm sure, others would be very interested to see a brief photographic tutorial of you using this tool if that is not too much to ask. I've no pressing need myself...a mate of mine sorted out all of my tyres and there's a commercial/agricultural tyre business right on the farm where I live but it's a job I may have to do myself someday. Thanks.

  5. Yours truly leaning on the front mudguard of the ex John Riley Constructor, PSU 439, with it's then owner, the irrepressible Bernie Jones, hanging around on the back. This 'photo was taken about 6-7 years ago at one of those wartime theme railway events. Sorry, I can't remember where, though I do remember how glamorous all the women looked in their 1940's style fashions and hairdos. Why don't they dress like that all the time ?

  6. It gets worse. The £2,500 I mentioned was just what they paid me. There was also the considerable haulage charge for dragging it up and down the motorways. At one point I got a call from the BBC asking if I would mind if it was towed 150 miles away from London to another location for a 10 second long interior shot. I said I didn't mind but asked, naively, why this 10 seconds filming couldn't be done where it already was. I was told, "Oh, it's on a different budget when it's at this other place". All of this is true.

  7. So, has this 6x6 been shortened up a little or has someone cobbled an alien bogie onto a Matador? Looks a well-balanced truck whichever.

Sorry N.O.S. I don't know anything about this AEC. This picture and a few others I've recently posted were sent to me by a friend. I'm just trying to find out some background from him and will post details if and when I can.

  8.:rofl: yes mate,a few years ago i would of loved to take that to shows just to wind the buggers up.

When this 'photo was taken it was being towed from Winkliegh, Devon where I'd been storing it to near London where it was to be used on the set of a BBC TV series called, I think, "The Good Earth". The BBC very kindly paid me £2,500 for 5 weeks hire and the trailer appeared in the story for 35 seconds. All the shots were interior and, in my opinion, could just as well been filmed in a studio. Do you think we're all paying too much for our licence fee ?

  9. I am still on the look out for 4 wheels so if any body can help, please get in touch.

    Regards Howard

10.50-16 tyres but does anyone have a photograph of the type of wheels Howard needs ? I occasionally see serviceable wheels of an ex military type on farm trailers. It would help if I know what pattern of wheel I'm looking out for.

  10. Don't know about the others,

    Thanks, Tony

What others ? There's only you and Major Fowler looking at this stuff. I've told you before, apart from you and Andy all of the other so called "forum members" are actually computer generated software programs designed to behave like real people. It's all controlled by this massive mainframe server code name "Jack" at a secret location somewhere in Dorset. Anyway, just for you and Andy, the posts now have captions. Regards, Tom
