Interesting thought Richard, but everyone is thinking of exotic explanations. It is much a more basic problem concerned with flying at this altitude.
thinking of low density air, maybe some kind of air speed sensor?
-
Nope Lauren this is to do with problems encountered at heights above 12km
Rightho, that's into the stratosphere then. Low air density. Maybe something to do with static buildup from convection around thunderstorms?
-
Is it something to do with static electricity? Maybe zepelin/aerostat tethering?
-
lightning arrestor?
-
Lauren nope, not an inductive device.
Which implies capacitive. Now what would you want a 1000V capacitor for?

Interesting with 1,000 volts Richard!
But it is transport related.
That's an interesting thought - An HT inter-vehicle stary would be more efficient and travel further, needing a smaller size of cable.
-
Or, being high voltage, maybe for flourescent lights under a particularly blingtastic kubelwagen?
-
is it for electrifying the hull of a vehicle, or a fence/barrier outside of it?

obviously somebody got it wrong and they were 30 quid at military odyssey just thought they needed saving anyway nice box and how much is brass making
It's a nice thing. I have to say, I wonder if there's an interesting story behind the Cromwell marking.
Is this the same one that was on sale at war and peace? That one was marked "Cromwell IV".
While it may not be a tank one, one chap I spoke to commented on the box being a rarity although he was passing it up as a better condition (but unboxed) sight was on another stand. As such don't give up - once you've identified what it really is I'm sure you'll find someone who'll love it.

Rectifier? (Possibly mercury vapour type with the screw-in part having the heater coil to get it started and the not-shown other end being the anode connection.)
Good call

A unique driving position for this vehicle, I think! Caption competition anyone?

Klystron tube?
I was actually thinking Krytron and got mixed up - either could be a good-un though

i have a binocular gunsight for a mk 4 cromwell patt G372 ross london well thats what it says on the tin! sorry box. there is a set on ebay for £950 and my set still have the foam eyepieces any genuine interest let me know no silly prices
As far as I'm aware, Cromwell didn't use a binocular sight, though if it's the one from W&PR the box is indeed painted with "Cromwell IV".
Can this be used as a range finder?
-
Yes Wally well observed.
Bliney that was quick!

Any ideas?

Wow, that's an odd one. The second pic looks a bit like a door with a hinge bracket running across it.

What I was saying was that ZDDP is not in gear oil as I understand it.
Wikipedia's not always the most accurate, but a google around seems to confirm it - ZDP / ZDDP replaced the lead part of EP oils quite early on. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_pressure_additive
More here - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_dithiophosphate
If you pick up some of the engine oil additive, which should be the same stuff, it might help.
-
Lauren,
ZDDP is a zinc additive for engine oils, it is not used in gear oils.
That's because it's already in EP gear oils, so you don't have to add it, along with sulphur.

Altering the air inlets to compress more air?
or
Altering the wing shape/angle to provide the same lift in less dense air?
Not sure why they'd want such a high voltage to do either though
