  1. Yeah he's bought that QL that was kicking around last year in the mags for under £1000, if I remember rightly the chap couldn't sell it because the cab was completely rotten, it was a recovery truck. I don't think he's going to want to break it for parts, not at £2500.

Went past it agian today. It has an aircraft refuller body.

  2. We know the picture is not from a film as my uncle and his friends set it up and developed it.

Interesting! This is a fairly well know picture, appearing in several journals over the years. I suspect it was produced in reasonable numbers (I've seen copies on ebay before now); and no doubt has caused many a tall story to be spun.

  3. I think I might have to look for a QL with a rotten cab as there's so much missing to put it back to anything near original...

I passed through Market Harborough today on the train and there is a yard just north of the station with what looked like a QL chassis/cab - the cab looking very rusty. (I only got a quick look as the train passed by.)

The yard contained all sorts of interesting vehicles, so no doubt someone on here will know who to contact - and apologies to the owner for any unwelcome attraction this may give.

  4. Can you post some photographs, please? I wonder if you are referring to the dummy tanks (Panzerattrappe) used as training aids during the German re-militarization.

The publishers Tankograd have published a book on the subject (Whermacht Special 4013)

  5. I was asked on here about film footage showing quads. This string seems a better place for them.

Please excuse the repetition in these lists, but these all show (perhaps only briefly) standard Ford or Chevrolet FATs:

  6. To help ease tensions, from the UN website http://www.un.org/aboutun/unhistory/

The name "United Nations", coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was first used in the "Declaration by United Nations" of 1 January 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers.

The two films are dated 14 June 1943; and "issued" 8 July 1943. Judging by the vehicles on parade, I don't think there can be much doubt about when this event took place.

I really like the Chevrolet C60 and Bedford QL portees, as any of those survived

Yes! A Bedford exists, albeit with a GS body - I attach a picture of it from many years ago. (Looking again, the style of wheel arches suggest this may be a genuine portee body.)

There is also an Austin K5 Portee in preservation - see http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?21655 and Military Machines International magazine, December 2010.

Does anyone have an opinion on the vehicle colour schemes? The quads (CMP & Guy) are clearly "desert sand". But I can't make out whether some of the others are olive drab and dark green/black, or desert sand and black - the film is too washed out for my eyes.

Interesting to see the Morris Commercial CDSWs have RAF roundals on their bonnets.

  7. Interesting to read all the comments about salvaging the Scapa Flow fleet - and Diver, thanks for those suggestions.

There's some moving footage on this feat here:

As can be seen, many of the ships were raised up-side-down, and had to be hacked about a lot before they could be lifted.

A while back there was also a documentary on the BBC showing "lost videos" - one showed one of the larger battleships breaking through the water surface, stunning footage. I wish it was on the net somewhere (it probably is, but I can't find it).
