  1. Hello Everyone, help please!

I am in the process of putting the clutch back together and refurbing the primary chain case so that it will hold some oil! There was none in it when I dismantled it, not surprising though since there was no gasket, no breather pipe and no drain plug!

But what oil do I put in there? The handbook says SAE 10, is there a modern equivalent? The other suggestion that the handbook has is to dilute engine oil with paraffin to stop the clutch plates slipping!! I am also slightly concerned about modern oils reacting with the cork plates which are in surprisingly good condition.

I did find something called Castrol TQF on the net, is that any good?

  2. I haven´t touched my 3sw gear box yet - do you have the part number of the 3hw part you need?

    Hi Einbeck

Well, the part number won't be what I expected as after counting all the teeth on each gear they clearly aren't wide ratio gears but the standard gears instead. What is needed is the mainshaft fourth gear and the second gear which locks fourth onto the mainshaft! Will have to check the parts book

  3. Having plucked up the courage to dismantle the gearbox and try and found out why it keeps jumping out of top gear, it turned out not to be a worn selector cam as the common cause. The first sign of what trouble may be inside was that the main shaft nut was only finger tight and the clutch housing had been moving about. I think the whole shaft had been allowed to move which has led to excessive wear on the teeth between 2nd and top. See the photo. It also turns out that although the gearbox casing is stamped WR for Wide Ratio the gears in it are most definitely standard ratio!!

anyhow now need to replace the gear......damn!

are they easy to find? Or can the gears be rescued??

  4. Absolutely right Guy. My mistake! I've built enough Triumphs that I should have remembered!! I was mixing up the distance tube with the foot-peg support tube in the parts list. The pre war tube is 2 1/2" long. However the 3HW has a different part number for some reason ? F2327

Well just to end this story, got a friend of mine to make up a suitable spacer but here is a picture I found on the net clearly showing the spacer. It's item 29

thanks for all your help once again chaps

  5. Thanks Ron and Guy,

i thought it was a bit strange that there was nothing between the two plates especially with the two big nuts on either side. It's no wonder my plates are buckled. Time to talk to a friendly engineer with a lathe!! :cool2:

    Thanks once again

  6. Hello All,

i guess this this subject has been mentioned before for a number of different vehicles but I would like to know what the modern equivalents are to HD50 and HD10 which is what the 3HW handbook says should be used in the Engine and Gearbox (HD50) and primary chain case (HD10)

i have seen modern equivalents to Straight 40 oils etc but are they ok to use or is ok to just use modern synthetics etc

    any thoughts?

    many thanks

    Andy

  7. Hello Everyone,

whilst working on the clutch I had to remove the left side footrest which is mounted on a common stud that goes right through to the opposite footrest. The stud goes through the two mounting brackets on the back of the engine and here is the question. Should there be some sort of spacer between the two mounting brackets? There isn't one on mine and it looks to me like the nuts on each end of the stud had been over tightened at some point causing the mounting brackets to buckle, hence the question!!

  8. Yes here is a picture of the strip down. The ally cases of the earlier models also have a breather pipe. I guess it's to stop any oil leaving through the breather. Although I don't fully understand the need for a breather at all. These must be far from airtight behind the clutch! Ron

Thanks Ron, can you tell me what the pipe does on the other side of the inner casing? Ie is it just cut off flush or does it go up/down etc

  9. I don't remember anything L/H thread on these. I have adopted other methods, such as, wedge a bar or screw driver between the floor and slots in the clutch centre hub and gently lean on a socket bar. Better if someone sits on the bike to stop it rising up. Ron

    Hi Ron,

couldnt help noticing that there is some sort of pipe in the primary timing case shown in your photo. Is it a simple breather pipe? I've been working on my 3HW clutch and it clearly doesn't have this pipe and there is just a hole in the inner part of the primary chain case. Do you have a closer shot of it?

  10. Hello Everyone,

I'm afraid I need some help again! I am in the process of fitting a "newer" gearbox into the bike so that I can refurb the "original" one. I notice that there appears to be a blanking plug or plate missing from the drive side of the box as I can see the end of one of the shafts. I presume that if I fit it like this I will end up with oil all over the floor! So, has anyone come across this before and can you get these plugs or is it just as easy to make one up and tap/seal it in place?

    Waddaya Fink? :D

  11. Hello Everyone,

in the process of swotting up on the technical stuff for the work I need to do on the 3HW I have found several references to "Knurled Washers" being fitted to the girder forks. These are said to be "free to rotate" Well, they are so free on mine that they are completely missing! Anyone have dimensions so I can get some made up or can you still get them from somewhere? I'm not entirely sure but I think there are supposed to be 6 fitted, is that right?

  12. Hi Sean,

    I,ve got the same problem!!

I removed the plunger from under the bottom of the box and found it has a worn top and the spring is damaged. This plunger goes into the cam plate for the gears, so if the plunger isn't doing its job I'm hoping that's what's causing the gears to jump out. If that ain't it as you say its strip the box!!

    anyone else had this problem?

    Andy

  13. Well, I must admit I thought the "hand" was something to do with Ulster but as far as I know my Uncle never had anything to do with Ireland or any Irish Regiments. He spent most of his Army career in the Royal Artillery and Combined Ops out in North Africa and the far East!!! The insignia above the one in the photo I believe is Anti Aircraft. Bit of a puzzle!
