    I've not come a cross these regulators before, just looked at their website and they look impressive but a bit expensive for the amount of welding I normally do, I will have a look on the well known auction site to see if used one comes up. 
     

    I’ve now made a copper heat plate ready for for next week

  2. No complaints from the neighbours yet, the cab is in the garage out of sight and I don’t make any real noise until after 10am and finish by 5pm, they all know I have military vehicles so I try not to annoy 🤔

    it’s always good to learn 1 new thing each day, I will make a copper pad in the next couple of days and give it a go. The woven pads are really good on flat surfaces, be carful not to hit and sharp edges hard as it can tear them to pieces and you will need a long nose pair of pliers to tighten the grinder locking wheel as there too deep for the standard tool.

    I've found a local stockist for the hobbyweld and emailed them to see if there still open at the moment. 
    Is that a flat piece of copper soldered to the pipe?

     

    I’ve looked at your blog for the tanker, what a fantastic find and restoration job. 

  4. Hobbyweld it is, I’ve seen them advertised but never used them, I don’t do that much welding these days ( until now ) so my last bottle has lasted quite some time. I’ll have a look on the website and find a local stockiest.

Thanks for all the advice, it looks like slowly is the key ingredient, I will definitely try clamping some copper to the back as I have never heard of doing that before, I will also try adjusting the gas as the pressure might be a bit to low, I’ve googled which gas is best but still not sure!! I currently have argoshield universal ( which is almost run out )  but everything I have read states that this is for thicker steels, any advice on gas and where to get some, I used to get refills from a garage friend owner who had a BOC account but he’s closed down.

  6. Ok thank you, Something else to add to the 4d maintenance list. 
     

    On a separate note I started the cab repairs today, there will be many many many more hours of welding required!! I also came to the conclusion that I hate welding panel work, it’s just that bit too thin, ideally a spot welder would be useful but the Mig will have to do, I am more used to welding Land Rover chassis’s so any advice on panel welding would be appreciated, as you can see in the pictures below I have tacked the first 2 repair sections in place, now if I were welding a chassis I would do a continuers seam but given the sheet steel is 1.2mm is it likely to Distort?

    Woven pad preparation wheel from screwfix £7-8 , absolutely blasts through Layers of paint and rust to a bear metal finish without damaging the metal.

  7. Almost forgot, the manual arrived today, yes it’s for a WOT8 but the mechanics are the same and it has the all important lubrications chart.

    I am still looking for a WOT6 manual if anyone has one and is happy to sell.

  8. The restoration continues!!

    Now the cabs off it makes life easier to access the mechanicals, the engine conversion needs a bit of fettling to get it right, at the moment it sits too high and is touching the handbrake assembly, the front cover was also sitting on the hand throttle bracket. The conversion plate looks to fit the bell housing quite well but both engine mounts will need to be altered.

     

    The 4D engine starts well, doesn’t rattle ( anymore than usual ) and doesn’t appear to smoke, the gearbox  however is a different matter!! It had filled with water after sitting for many years  which is apparently a common problem, where the gear lever is exposed, water can enter via the reverse gate rod, the gearbox was completely seized and stuck in gear, after several goes with a plumbers torch and plenty of patience all gears freed off, bearings will all need replacing and the gears will need further inspection once removed.

  9. Thanks for the info, I will check the pump just to be on the safe side. 
     

    Took advantage of the lovely weather today and removed the lower section of the cab, this section is actually lighter that the top, most properly because most of the bottom is missing, the tin worms have been hard at work !!

    Gave it a good going over with the pressure washer which revealed the full extent of the rust. More sheet steel will need to be ordered.

  10. Progress was a bit slower today but the lower part of the cab is ready to be lifted off , luckily I have 2 teenagers with not much to do at the moment so weight lifting can be the exercise tomorrow.

    The cab roof is very fragile and needs a considerable amount of welding, after a good pressure wash more older repairs were found, ideally I would like to have the cab sand blasted but I don’t think there would be much left.

    I like the idea of a 300tdi But not sure if the cable and rod brakes are up to it😂

    had a good start today with the strip down, work has dried up since going on lockdown so making the most of it.

    door hinge pins took a bit of heat but eventually came out.

    unfortunately I don’t have a large workshop or barn but luckily most of the cab is a big meccano kit

    Last chance to play spot the chassis number, I have found another 4 point star and beginning of the original  chassis number, I have made out 713***1

  12. Hi Tom

    i did read about the 200tdi conversation and have considered it  as it’s a good engine (job for another day ) how’s it working out?  the 4d has been fitted with a proper conversation plate but the engine mounts need to be adjusted, my plan at the moment is to remove the cab, do all the welding ( loads of welding ) get it back on the road and use as it is for a while
