  1. I have a small grit blaster from ACE (I think), but seems to get clogged up quite easily, damp perhaps, but the grit I get might be a bit big, so I was looking to replace it with something more meaty, as it takes a while to do anything large. I have a decent compressor, so would be interested in finding out what the next step up is. I know a blaster and powder coater but the issue is getting things to him, as well as cost.

  2. I have two tins of NATO olive green matt paint, which, even after much stirring, fail to produce the correct effect when painted on. Instead the paint remains shiny and sticky for ages. As they are both almost full 5 litre tins at £35 each, I would like to use them rather than buy more. Is there anything I can do to rescue them? I did a quick search on here to see if the topic had been raised before with no luck, but as we spend a lot of time watching paint dry then it occurred to me that someone must have encountered this problem before?

    Cheers

  3. Apart from the obvious logistics problems of getting it onto a low loader, how do you actually approach the Army with a view to rescuing it? I suppose the Range Warden is a start but even then they must be on a list of ownership somewhere?

  4. Yeah, but isn't the fundamental problem of low power training rounds that they have different angles of trajectory from normal rounds thereby only dealing with some of the issues of training?

But it seems odd to me, as the return of the breech block would be hindered by the length of the (spent) round, unless you have reloaded the piston? Something like a rifle grenade ignition round?

  5. The Piglet came from, hmm, not sure. The CMP came from Pete Gain/Gant - is he still around? The Bofors came from The Shoreham Aircraft Museum in Kent, the Sultan from A + S in Norfolk, the 110 off Ebay from the Isle of Arran. Which goes to show I suppose how widespread our 'hobby' is. And I am quite happy to go anywhere to pick up parts, view stuff, though all of the above were bought sight unseen, from photos only. But then they aren't what might be called run of the mill stuff like Jeeps which need definitely checking on before.

  6. Below is a pic of the latest addition to my fleet. Underneath the faded red paint, remains of County stripes and 8 spoke wheels is 13 KJ 12, once a V8 110, now powered by a 200TDi with Discovery gearbox. Runs pretty well, but the gearbox sits too far back, and the previous owner didn't get round to finishing off the gearbox tunnel, so I may put it back to original, keeping the TDi. It is generally in OK condition though it really needs a new rear crossmember, and a set of doors. And some NATO satin green of course! Anybody know of Land Rover breakers that have ex-Army versions in, or does anybody have a decent pair of front doors for sale? It came with the V8 though I doubt I will refit that. Also I have Form 666 from the disposal sale, but how do I find out it's history?

  7. Hi

Having finally co-located my 'collection' under one roof, it occurs to me (it was on the to-do list!) that I need to do something about insurance and what have you. What sort of things should I ask for from an insurance quote, and what are the likely exclusions I should look out for? Are some companies better in certain areas than others? Do we have a discount scheme with anyone? None of my collection runs at the moment, though I plan to have the Sultan going in 6 months time, but I have a quantity of spares, as well as minor items like gensets. Security is about to be upgraded, and the shed is on a friend's farm.

Finally, I try to maintain safe methods of working, PPE, some task risk assessment, but the main drawback is that I work alone. What can I do to keep things safe? I try to avoid welding, but then there are all the other things like grinders etc.

    Thanks

  8. A moment of doubt there, so I checked the voucher. Yes, it was D Sqn, from 12/88 to 02/94, when it went on the QOY UIN until 06/03, at which point it went to Ashchurch, and sold off soon after. So I guess that in the middle period it went to B Sqn but wasn't recorded as such?

  9. Hi Barry

Blimey, there's a bit of a concidence! I recently bought CVR(T) Sultan reg 92KB12, ex D Sqn QOY, complete with 'Belfast' title written above the first wheel station, so any pics of it in action would be extremely gratfully received!

  10. Generally the bum roll (nominally used for the poncho but in reality you somehow have to manage to get your NBC suit, inc overboots and 2 pairs of gloves in it) is carried on top of the kidney pouches, with just the 2 end clips going round your back and clipping onto the top loops of the ammo pouches. Ignore the other two clips and bungee it to the kidney pouches with 2 cammo bungies - no disco bungies!!! Stops it all bounching around when running. Remember to put black insulating tape around the ends of all the tabs so they don't slip out of the metal sliders. You can use the front straps on the yoke to lower the kit when patrolling, then pull it up tight when having to dash around.

  11. Hi folks

Just been reminded to introduce myself. Proud owner of a CVR(T) Sultan, not far off being roadworthy (well, we all have hopeful moments!), Land Rover Series III Piglet, MK12 Bristol Bofors L60/40, a dozen or more ex-Army battery chargers - there was a good reason for collecting them (!) and various odds and ends. The Sultan is my main effort at the moment, and if anybody has any info on Bofors LAA then that would be gratefully received. It is all in the wilds of Aberdeenshire so it is doubtful you will be seeing any of it at Beltring any time soon...

    Many thanks
