  1. Or are we only getting part of the story ? a sensible approach would be to strip off 1 meter of soil carefully with EOD personnel checking for any surprises. I assume most of the mines would be close to the surface , once removed they could get in machines to do the bulk or the remaining overburden. the shovels again for the last bit.

     

    something that strikes me as odd , why hasn't there been a professional/authorized GPR survey done to confirm or denounce the disputed treasure hunters GPR results ?

     

    is something being covered up (excuse the pun), would be mighty embarrassing for the Germans finding a sealed tomb containing slave laborers or Concentration Camp prisoners. is the tunnel complex already being accessed by another route and anything of value being removed by the government. there are other countries/groups claiming the yet undiscovered contents to be theirs. why bother sharing all that gold ?

     

    why is everything taking so long , total bollocks about it costing the Military a huge amount to do the work , they are already being paid to do sod all , they have manpower and vehicles who are not off fighting a war so all they would miss out on is some drill practice and painting rocks.

    the 2 guys may be very sure the squiggly lines on the GPR screen are a gold train but is it old pipe and some ore transport wagons ? ( innocent stuff you may find abandoned in a mine ) From what I have seen on the net about GPR there is quite an art to understanding the pictures ?

     

    All those involved with this train during the war who survived would have been thinking, I could use a train load of gold to set myself up after this messy business is over, has all the removable valuables been dragged out years ago ?

     

    Just saying Tho ! I want it to be exactly what they are predicting , only time will tell ? also interesting how various parties (aside from the finders )are positioning themselves to be the recipients of the contents even before we know what is inside ?

  3. Looks like a great project ! always some interesting repairs on old things, I found dozens of dodgy wiring repairs on my 1954 Dnepr , all hidden away as little presents for the future owner to find...

  4. Interesting but it was probably the choice of the local council/community at the time. its part of history now and even though offensive today it shows how far things have changed and in no small part by the men of all races who went off to fight.

     

    surprising how many died at Camp Meade ?

  5. Had another look and it did have a fair bit of rust in the chassi , I suspect it will be terminal (or at least out of my budget) to repair. I have been bitten by the bug though and will continue to search. my ideal would be a SWB factory V8:-D

When you strip it there should be areas of hidden factory paint that have not faded or been touched up with new paint. when I pulled my Jap mountain gun apart there was plenty of original paint between the recoil mech and barrel . at the time I just guessed the colour but have since found some vehicle re painters have spectrum analysers that can accurately match colours.

I spotted an old landrover today on the side of the road for sale $1800 ono , was tempted enough to turn around and go back for a look , I think it was a series 2 (not a Landrover expert) SWB soft top , army green , fat tyres and fitted with a Holden 179 straight six . a bit rough all around with modified bumpers and snorkel air cleaner. I will go and have another look tomorrow , besides rust in the chassi (where in the chassi is most common for terminal rust ) what else should I be looking for , any advice from the experts would be greatly appreciated ?

  8. Its possible , the little studs on the outside may be spring loaded and their compression operated the gauge ? although I have only ever used flip over gauges when measuring bores. a long tedious procedure something like this would be quick and could be done by the crew.

    we are inventing a use for this because it looks like a shell casing , anybody else got a clue or guess ?

  9. Hi Folks after WW1 many trophy guns were sent to the Colony's .My local town (Nelson New Zealand) received a Krupp 10.5 cm 04 gun . Breach serial number 7 carriage serial number 364 . the gun was displayed in the Queens Garden until sometime during WW2 when it was disposed of .

    there are 2 different accounts of why . Concern that Japanese aerial photography may locate it and bombing would result. the other was local kids were playing war and windows were being smashed in the nearby Art gallery.

    Council records state the works department should dispose of it by removal or burying on site . nothing more is known although one rumour says the barrel was buried and the carriage was scrapped (scrappy could only deal with light gauge material)

    There is some interest in the Gun now and a small group of us are trying to put together as much information as possible with the view of running an article in the newspaper to see if anybody has photos or stories associated with the gun (hopefully someone knows where Granddad buried it or if the wheels were used on the farm ) its a long shot but worth a try.

    I would like to find out more about its history with the German Army , the only info that we have is that it was captured by the NZ Division ? Are there any forums more dedicated to Artillery or German WW1 records , Museums or archives I could contact ? cheers Tim800px-K04rear.jpg
