  1. Back in the 1990's I remember seeing WW1 dated railway goods wagons in the scrap yard out-side Andover. I believe these had come out of one of the old ammunition depots being closed down.

     

    As someone else has already said, the current pattern of aluminum mess tin was introduced during 1944-45 and war-time dated examples can still be found in the stores. I used to have 1945 dated examples.

  2. At the end of the day he had live firearms without the appropriate Licence.

     

    There are manadatory jail sentences for such offences so if you are silly enough have illegal weapons in your possession expect to go to jail. All of these weapons could have been deactivated if he wished.

     

    Even Regimental museums now have to have all their exhibits deactivated.

  3. Unless I am mistaken Bovington have had this vehicle for about 20 years in their reserve collection.

     

    I believe Prestons example has recently gone back to Ireland as a swap. I think his new 17 Pounder was part of the exchange.

  4. I read a story in a book many years ago of how in the early days of WW2 a Royal Artillery Officer was sent down to the South Coast to identify suitable locations for Railway Guns.

     

    During this work he identified a short spur line on a map which he thought would be ideal to locate such a gun. When he arrived at the site he found an overgrown building which upon breaking into found a First World War railway gun in perfect preservation. The caretaker subsequently turned up who confirmed he had been receiving a small payment each week since the 1920's to look after this gun.

     

    Can anyone confirm this story?

  5. Transport is a problem with carriers because with an unladened weight of approximately 4 tons you will very lucky to get away with a 7 1/2 tonner. Without a specially made light-weight body the most a 7 1/2 tonner will carry is 3 1/2.

     

    I am still looking for a suitable beavertail or similar if anyone knows of one for sale at a reasonable price. I have an HGV Licence.

     

    Carrier parts are very hard to come by and you will end up fabricating most of the sheet metal work. The price will soon mount up if you want a 100% correct carrier.

    Collar insignia would have been small versions of the cap badge.

    They were also part of an armoured brigade during this period based in Bristol. The badge consisted of a red stags red on either white or green backing. There is a well known picture of Profumo handing over the first Saladin to the regiment in the easly 1960's. The crew are wearing stags head badge.

  7. If the medal section of the form is up to date and he did not even qualify for any campaign/service medals, the suggestion must be that he never left Australia.

  8. Does anyone have any experience of using these on 6 volt systems?

     

    Because my Carrier is run so infrequently I find that I have to clean the points every time I want to start it. Consequently to save this hassle I decided to purchased one of these kits which on my vehicle refused to produce a spark.

     

    Frank does talk about in his instructions that if the coil or starter motor are taking too much power there may not be enough yet to energise the module, but does anyone else have this problem?

     

    The silly thing is after a clean of the points it normally starts first time.

  9. As you say it very much depends on who you speak to.

     

    There is one guy that I have been put through to in the past who seemed to be an expert on Historic Vehicles, but 99% of the time expert to speak to someone use to insuring Ford Escorts. Also expect to be waiting a long time on the phone before you get to speak to anyone.

     

    When I queried the price this time I was told amongst other things that I had key replacement insurance on the policy which went immeadiately saving a few pounds.

     

    If companies want this type of business they should be supplying designated phone lines and trained staff to deal with it.

  10. Are Insurance companies able to issue documents on a vehicle chassis number or only the Registration Number.

     

    Premium Choice formly Roadsure are insisting on issuing 90 day cover notes untill such time as I get my Universal Carrier Road registered.

  11. I would assume at that time they were operating as the Divisional Anti-Tank Regiment for the 43rd Wessx Division. As such they were equiped with Archers and later Charoteers.

     

    Insignia would have consisted brass RWY (small pattern) titles and Divisional patch. Not sure if they wore collar insignia as well.

    If you have a serious interest I can let you have the contact details of the Regimental archivist.

     

    Take a look in the Regimental history to confirm or do a search on the web.

  12. Most people who seem to be in the know believe that the goverment have already dismissed the ideal of banning deacts. The evidence to support such a ban does not exist. Converted relicas rather than deacts is the main area of concern.

     

    They could possibly force all old spec deacts to be converted to new standards, but anything else could cost a lot of money in compensation.
