    now that's an amazing picture ....shame it's not from the other side so we could see if it's the same sub ? ..fantastic pic anyways :)

    I've always fancied visiting the Aleutian Islands ...........AFTB did a big feature on them many years ago and there's lots of abandoned wreckage and installations to see (there used to be even more until the US decided they'd better have a bit of a tidy up in the early '80s I think it was)

  2. All points I agree with! Indeed, Churchill was as fast cross country as Sherman, a point often missed by those who decry it for lack of speed.

     

    6 pdr firing APDS had a considerably better armour penetration that 75mm too. But that's progress for you!

     

     

    Just out of interest ... what was the weight of the projectile from the 75mm and also the 76mm from the Sherman guns? ....

Looks a cracking read :) I think the Churchill is often looked down on nowadays but to be fair it was good old bruiser of a tank and didn't serve us too badly .....I'd go as far as too say equally as well as the Sherman ? ....there were a few notable 'disasters' I guess.... Hill 112 being one of them? but....if Shermans had been used in the same action against the same well sited .88s?...... the result wouldnt have been any different I think.

    ......anyways !....a great shame she's been sort of 'downgraded' in many peoples opinion as 'yet another British tank failure ' perhaps ?.... :)

    Do I recall one of these being rescued from Paris a few years ago??? I seem to recall reading an article (possibly on here?) of one that had been found in the back of a sort of lumber yard in a Paris backstreet?....The truck had to be more or less stripped down to get it out of there ????? Or am I thinking of a different vehicle all together ? :)

    Anyways ! ..they're wonderful looking trucks ! :)

  5. Can I ask an obvious (well it is to me ) question? Why were Peel group so intent on scrapping her?

    If a fair offer had been made relating to her scrap value ? (was an offer made?) of at least as much if not maybe at the very least a £ or so more than the offer had been off the Turkish Company ?.... why would any sane company not take that offer ? ....

    baffled I is :)

    This whole 'liability insurance' scam is ridiculous though it's gotta be said .....

    in any sane world, if somebody climbed up on one of those tanks and fell of it?.... then by any amount of common sense it should be their own damn fault but...as we sadly know things don't go like that these days :(

    What a rotten end for some lovely tanks though ......the welding up I could live with cos given enough time and a plasma cutter and / or a disc cutter you could get them open again .........but the concrete ? ..oh no ....that is a wicked thing to do to them :(:(:(

  7. They also filled them with concrete and welded them shut. It was a shame.

  8. A grand project ...and a mighty useful bit of kit to have about once she is working again ! :)

    ..........there must have been hundreds of such cranes in service during the War but I guess they're not a really easy piece of kit to decide you want to have :) ...

    I used to have a Coles Crane for many years and I don't think that up until the middle '70s much changed on them fittings wise ????... so the best I can suggest is..... keep your eyes and ears open for any Coles yard cranes wherever they may turn up ...you may well find you can use bits off the much later models to get/keep yours going again :)
