Is that true? ....if so , what the heck was the point in bringing in the law to stop paying cash then ? ...the ones with 'no fixed abode' are usually the ones doing all the stealing and the very same ones that the new 'no cash' system was supposed to deter .........

Just asking because as I recall, the English fella that owned Batterie Todt was the same fella that dug up an extremely rusty Cruiser off the beach at Dunkirk in the late '70s maybe early '80s ?

I hadn't heard that tank got displayed eventually at Todt though...and as I recall it wasn't there back in 2004 when i last visited ?......When I last saw pictures of it ? it was extremely rusty and I do mean extremely rotted out and collapsing on itself rusty.... and I wouldn't have been surprised to hear that the salt water hd finally won and it had collapsed on itself?

Having said all that , the tank painted white in the picture does look to be in an awful lot better condition than the one that came out of the sand at Dunkirk so it may not be the same tank at all ..

I had immense fun with my old Dad back in 2004 when we had 3 weeks over there recreating lots of great pictures for him

was this in the meadows sort of behind Pegasus Bridge ?..... We pulled the camper into a park there one afternoon and got talking to the owners old father who was very eager to tell us the history of the campsite when he realised we were obvioously there for a nostalgic visit .he marched us about iup and down the lane and between our language problems ! we learnt that the park and the field on the other side of the road were both big drop zones for gliders on the night of June 5th

I reiterate what most have said above..

More or less any Landrover (apart from the huge bodied ambulances for example) are very stable vehicles indeed when employed 'normally' ..I've spent many years driving just about all MKs of them and have competed 'off road' too in them (leaf and coil sprung versions) in some a very serious manner..... and yes of course you can tip them up but generally only if you get very extreme in your driving indeed....

Please keep in mind ...

It's difficult to make a 'hard and fast' rule on such things.....I've seen vehicles go 'over' in what would to many people might have looked like 'safe' situations...

such as for example:..a slight hollow......(rabbit hole or badger set or perhaps a prairie dog in your district ! ) on the downward side of an apparently normal looking sideslope causes a front wheel on that side to 'dip' by surprise....this causes the centre of gravity to alter dramatically and whoop! over you go !

However I digress.......

Basically what I am saying is this....

In any normal every day driving situation , on or off road ....you shouldn't really ever have a situation where a Landrover would tip over any easier than any other truck or 4 x 4 So if you are confident of your abilities to spot and to stop a potentially dangerous situation , carry on and have some fun

(Oh and don't listen to anyone saying the same kinda guff about those little Suzuki jeeps tipping over either ...cos they weren't any worse than any other small 4x4 anyways ......... and over here in the UK if they did tip over, it was usually because they were being driven as if they were a hot 2 wheel drive teenagers hatchback instead of a 4x4 )

Has there even been one single incident involving the use or a 'reactivated' firearm ? ... a robbery or a murder? .....I can't think of one because the weapons these terrorists have access to and are using are certainly not reactivated weapons . Ridiculous knee jerk indeed

crikey I proper like that old truck doesn't look too bad either really ....well worth a rebuild I'd say

'Cobbled together' out of a derelict timber yarder and some scrap steel plate or not ?.......I reckon it looks grand ....

...and I'd far rather see a 'bitsa' tank like that , rather than seeing any old M4 / Sherman chassis /undercarriage based timber yarder lamped up and thrown off at the local scrap yard

...which is otherwise surely where it would have ended up

It's very disappointing to hear of the ho0ps the DVLA seem to place in front of folk ..... I understand they had to tighten up from the days when you could register a rusted out wreck just to swap a good number plate etc but ..It does seem from reading various forums as no one at DVLA actually knows or works to an agreed method

My wife just sourced me some cracking sort of army green 'leatherette' which I have recovered all the seats in my old Landrover with...it was ridiculously cheap and is very good quality material ..very strong and I'd imagine it'll prove to be hardwearing.......I'll ask her tomorrow where it came from ..all i know is that it came off the WWW from somewhere

It's no wonder the Churchill had better 'off road' performance than a Sherman though ....their tracks did have some seriously aggressive grousers didn't they!

Once again ....another staggering restoration In awe of how you chaps set about such a gargantuan task and it all steadily comes back together Absolute respect to your engineering skills and in some sort of order

..for all the 'faults' ? I wouldn't be at all surprised if it sold for something top like that though ..

Reasons ? ...well... those specialist 'classic' vehicle auctions often attract very monied buyers who aren't always/usually so keen on the 'details' as one of us might be ...and it does look very nice to the average punter.......By way of an example I'd guess a fella with a good amount of money goes to the sale...he doesn't perhaps get exactly what he went there for ( maybe he 'knows' his chosen vehicle/s a lot better ?so he decides not to buy the one he actually went for ) .and he's stood there looking at this Jeep as the bidding starts and thinks " that's cool! I always fancied one of those !" and jumps in on the bidding thinking to himself something like "I came here with £80 grand to spend on the Ferrari or the Maserati and didn't get them so .....I'll have that at £30 grand !"

You might think such people are few and far between but.....

I have a good mate who specialises in building classic '70s Rally cars and I do mean 'from the ground up' his work is truly incredible the attention to the 'proper detail' is more like a work of art than a rally car . . his main thing is Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts ....... and he sells these from a starting point (dependent on your specification) of about £90 grand very much upwards ....and he's very busy

Now...... whats wrong with that you might say ? Well as he would tell you .....the vast majority of the cars he builds are never going to get rallied ...most of them are to go into private collections alongside of the likes of classic Astons and Ferraris etc ......often the buyer will say something like

"Oh I always fancied one of these Escorts when I was a lad and now I can afford one I thought why not ?" ...

Great for my mates business but his cars are really something else and it does somewhat disappoint him that the car will never be driven as it has been built to be , most of the time it's being sold to someone who just wants to 'have one' in his garage .....but the buyer has the money so ...

I've always thought the Conqueror a true beast of a tank ......does anyone know if any tests were carried out on the JS2 versus the Conqueror ? ....guessing by the time the MoD acquired one or two the possibility of them ever meeting up in reality was gone but ?...did it happen somehow ? where any captured/obtained from any of the Israeli conflicts around that time maybe to enable such a full on test to be conducted?..

Whilst trawling various videos of derelict and abandoned tanks on Youtube I somehow found my way to this fellas story. He set out to try and track down a derelict Sherman a mate of his had photographed once when he was working in Africa !....Some on here may have already seen this forum and some of you may actually know this intrepid fella and his mate who travelled thousands of miles and ...must have spent a lot of dollars ....all sadly to no avail in their particular search for a tank but............they sure did turn up some incredible amounts of other WW2 stuff including a field with (from what I can count) at least a couple of dozen jeeps in.......hope you enjoy it

Apparently ....to keep troops amused after the end of the war and whilst they were awaiting demobbing and returning home, competitions were often held to see 'who could do what ' with a Jeep. The beach buggy one on here has (I reckon) used air drop tanks to make the bulbous wings with ?

I'm sorry to be the one to say it but ....the loud 'bang' was (unless you were very lucky) something letting go to ease the torque ......probably a front axle half shaft ? ...... I say front because you said she continued after the bang 'nice and normal'?...

. so I presume you still had full drive to the back end ? I'm not familiar with your vehicle so ... don't know the construction of your transfer case but occasionally with Landrovers its the gubbins that engage the front axle in the transfer box that will have given out

'Wind up' is very common with selectable 4x4 and I've always tired a few things to unlock / unwind them ...

....pulling onto a grass verge with 2 of your wheels (either side it doesn't matter which) ...and giving her a bit of rev to spin those wheels will usually work .. or as someone else suggested .... slip her into 2 wheel drive whilst still on the muddy field and letting the back wheels spin a bit will also clear it out ...anything you can do to get a wheel to be able to spin will usually work basically ... vigorous turning of the steering wheel with one of the front wheels on something that it can spin on ...or as someone else also said... letting her bump over a few things such as kerbs as a last resort ....all you're trying to do is get a wheel to spin basically .... on a Bedford 4x4 I encountered we had to jack one wheel up and you wouldn't believe how it span all on it;s on accord to free itself ..... I use my 'modern' Mitsubishi a lot in 4x4 and it's no better on her ... I have to be really careful especially if I have engaged the rear diff lock whilst off road as although you can shift the lever you can rapidly tell she has not come out of 'full drive' ....

I do hope you haven't done too much damage but as I said , the first thing I would investigate is the front half shafts

Not really having a clue as to what a Sherman is fetching on the market these days so what does everybody think on the price they're suggesting ?

I'd have thought a really 'good condition running useable Sherman' was well worth £150 grand myself?.....

There seem to have been quite a few wrecks in various conditions around the internet in the last few years and they're regularly (supposedly ?) selling anywhere between £30 and £50 grand?.......

Now, I would imagine it is well easy to spend at the very least another £50 grand rebuilding one on parts alone never mind factoring in the hours of work especially if you are having to pay a specialist restorer ?.......So, all things considered I'd say £150,000 would be about right? in fact I'd go so far as to say ..a bargain ?...and if that lottery comes in before the auction she is MINE I 'm telling ya !

.but.....as I said .......

2 very grand old ladies there that certainly deserve a home after all the years of graft they must have put in

I must admit to having a soft spot for ex military trucks when they found themselves in service for Funfairs and Circus's and also as breakdown trucks....I'd love to see them restored to the glorious beasts they must have been when they were first demobbed with loads of gleaming bodywork and coach lining paint detailing

Ah well....I'll add them to the 'if I ever win the Lottery' list
