1. one possible option you have, although I'm not condoning this, is to try and determine the approximate month/year of your MB - ACM tub number, chassis details (late/early) etc... Once you have decided when it was probably built, or at least an estimate that could fit with the vehicle details, then I'd get a repro chassis tag from Robert De Ruyter (who makes the absolute best repros) and he will engrave it with the chassis number you want. Once rivetted (Robert supplies the correct Drive Rivets) onto the chassis, that becomes your chassis number for registration purposes.

I'm not suggesting for a minute that Robert is in the business of trying to fool anyone with his repro chasis tags - he will supply what you require in good faith, on the basis that the information you supply is correct and you're entitled to use it. I have a second late Willys 'JEEP' chassis tag from my 45MB I sold a few years back, and I use this as a keyring.

On of my friends recently finished restoring a 44 GPW and when he came to register it (US import) the chassis number he found stamped into the metal was GPW1234567 (can't recall the number) and this matched the rest of the vehicle. The DVLA came back and said that chassis number was already registered to a Ford GPW Jeep, so it seems someone had previously 'chosen' that number for a different vehicle - what a coincidence! The DVLA treated the GPW as 'without chassis number' and he had to have the MVT make an inspection to confirm age related plate eligibility. In the end, he had to rivet a plate on the chassis which had a 21 (or 16?) digit chassis number the DVLA provided to him.

In summary, it's possible to get age related without a chassis number, but it might be easier to choose an unused number that's approximately correct, and just put that on your chassis before you try to register it. If you goto G503.com and search the serial numbers, you'll find something that's close for your MB's features/age.

I forgot to add, in my experience (3 imports registered in the past 5 years) the DVLA are only interested in there being a permanently fixed (stamped or rivetted) unique chassis identity number on the vehicle. If it has one, and MVT or IMPS have verified that number as 'such and such a year', then you're good to go.

Have you got a link for Robert De Ruyter ? thanks

  2. Hi Guys.

I have just insured my 44GPW for £90 2 drivers fully comp !!!! agreed valuation of £??.000 can you beat that.

When I first owned her 6 years ago it was £105 with Roadsure which crept up each year so I didnt bother putting it back on the road once it got to £135 !!!! now 3 years later its £90.

They are a specialist company, Check them out http://www.glynwood.co.uk/motor.php P.S. got my Motorcaravan insured with them too for £216.

  3. Ian,

Do any of the REME numbers relate to the original chassis number??

    Richard

    Hi Richard

Yes, the REME plate number has been stamped with the same stamps as the alloy plate and the front number, the original number is the same but different stamping tool.

I will post pictures when I can.

  4. I own 53 YH 48 (1944 GPW). I've recently requested a copy of the card so be interesting to see what turns up.

One thing you YH guys might be able to help me with is Chassis numbers. As well as the MOS data plate, my GPW had a Chassis number stamped on the front frame horn (drivers side) but on the side of the horn (just behind the bumper). Not in the usual place and not the usual style. I have since seen seveal other British Jeeps with this additional chassis stamping and for years have wondered what it purpose was?? Was it just a duplicate stamping of the original chassis number for ease of viewing OR was it another type of British Census numbering??

Be interested to know if any of your jeeps have the number and how it relates (if at all) to the chassis number thats in the original position OR the Data plate.

    Cheers

    Richard

Hi Richard I also have a 44GPW reg 23YH35 and like you I posted my request off to 'Deepcut' a few days ago so it will be interesting what they turn up ?

My jeep also have some other chassis # stampings, the original one is just behind the L/H shocker mount and almost unreadable unless you rub it with fin 'wet un dry' then there is one just behind the L/H bumper plate on top of the chassis stamped with the same punch as the REME plate and a forth one on a alloy plate bolted to the L/H chassis leg just infront of the shocker and also stamped with the same punch.

Just to make it clear, all 4 numbers are the same.

  5. Other than the usual RAF markings/Roundel etc what unit markings would an Austin K2 Ambulance in RAF service carry ?

Would they relate to the Command or Squadron or was there a specific "Medical" marking along the lines of a Maintenance Unit marking.

    Hi David

Did you get any replies ? as I have just posted a similar thread.

    Cheers

  6. Hi Guys.

I need photos of WW2 RAF airfield vehicle markings for my GPW, its going to be B/91 (RAF Enstone)

Please post photo of your restored vehicle or origional ww2 photo.

Its the B/ style I need but any photos will do.

    Cheers Ian

  7. Hi Guys almost finished the restoration of my 44 GPW but got a couple of questions.

#1 Should the gearbox/transfur box be the same colour as the engine (grey) or green ?

#2 Should the airfilter and cross over tube etc be Black ? Grey ? or Green ?

#3 Can you get a 12v battery that looks like the origional 6v battery ?

    Cheers.

  8. Hi Guys why has my 44 GPW block only got 3 core plugs ? rather than the usual 5 ?

Moulding number is 908756 and engine number is #1722

If its a later CJ2 engine or even worst a Morris Marina engine  fitted I dont want to know !!!!!!!!!!

  9. OK folks - Weymouth is a go!

We have the all clear to take part in the Sunday parade with the tanks and 'special' vehicles for those who would like to take part. This is a very special deal and you will be blown away by it. This is thanks to John Ilot from the Dorset MVT who has pulled this off for me - what do you expect - he owns a Mans Truck :coffee: - it is a brotherhood :pfrt:

Wewill travel from Maiden Newton at War via Dorchester to Lodmoor country park and meet up with everyone else there and then the parade leaves at 11:00 through the town and then park up. Once the crowds have settled down we would then head back to MNaW - a full day and a wonderful end to the weekend. We will be tight on MV numbers as the council will only allow 87 MV's in the parade - which has been the same every year so those of us who can't fit in with their own MV's I will make sure you squeeze in as foot soldier.

They is also talk of a steam train taking the reenactors back from Weymouth to MNaW - that one is thankfully out of my hands!

If we pull this off - along with MNaW and Weymouth Veterans weekend then I can safely say that Dorset is the place to be for WW2 history over that weekend and puts it fair and square on the map.

So the tankers - let me know if this appeals to you!

    Kind regards,

    JB!

Am I missing something I thought this was 2011 ? or did my resto take longer than I though :nut:

What date is it this year and are there any spaces left ? :undecided: cheers

  10. Hi all,

I'm trying to discover what blend all this lovely military paint is??

Is it enamel, cellulose or acrylic. Do you thin it before spraying, or is useable straight out of the tin?

I'd also like to know what make of red oxide you all use on your restorations. I assume you all use red oxide for it;s originality??

Hi Nigel I have just used Zinc Phosphate Grey Primer & Dark Olive Green for my British GPW, both are mixed with White Spirit rather than cellulose thinners which mean you dont get a reaction with other paints and you can spray it outdoors on hots days (if we have any more) without it drying as it comes out the nozel.

  11. Base overhaul means your Jeep underwent the rebuild programme in 1956, B398 would be the depot number, various military and civilian depots/contractors were involved, it would have been completly dismantled, every component sent to various sections for overhaul and reconditioning, then a new Jeep was assembled from reconfitioned/new parts, so unlikely to be same parts from the original Jeep, hence why so many Jeeps have a mixture of ford and willys parts

Cheers Nick that proberly explains why I have an early Ford engine #1722 with 'WC' valves and an odd con-rod, a 43 Willys box full of 'F' parts but most the other parts appear to be Ford, bit of a Heinz 57, where would I find out where B398 was ? cheers

  12. I don't have much info on ENSTONE it was mainly a bomber training station 91 group. So the theory is a Roundel plus B/91 plus a bridge class mark. On a Jeep its a case of put the marking where it will fit. The convention was roundal on offside with Command/Group mark above it . Have a dig into other local airfield some were bound to be involved in 2TAF and therefore far more likely to have Jeeps.

    TED

Hi Ted thanks for the info, could you PM me your phone number please. thanks Ian

  13. The attached taken sept 1941 is a classic of correct marking. Roundal with the M for Maintenance Command . The RAF reg on the number plate and the dual bridge class facing forward in a prominent position. I would guess at this date the colour is RAF Blue Grey but more likely Khaki Green No 3. In recent months I have been digging deeply into the RAF records re colour and markings; I have made great progress but I will never get the full story as some documents are not availible in their original unamended form. It is becoming apparent that some vehicles never received an RAF reg or serial number but continued on their pre spring 1941 Middlesex County Council reg number.

Let me know what vehicle what period and what theatre of operations and I will do my best to give you what the good book said which often was not happened in reality.

    regards TED

Hi Ted can you help with the correct markings for a Ford Jeep based on a local airfield (Enstone if poss) in 1944

The restoration is almost complete and the paint went on yesterday.

    Thanks

  14. Pete, it looks as if you're the third person on here with a jeep in the YH series - perhaps you should have a gathering! http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?23711-Jeep-chassis-no&p=255920#post255920

Obtaining the card may be productive - the card for a Tilly I used to own recorded the wartime serial that it had been converted from.

Make that 4 of us with YH :-) I have just started to tidy up my 44 GPW which I have owned for about 6 years and never knew what the brass plate ment ? it reads 23 YH 35, chassis 183616, Base OH, 1 56 & B398 can anyone tell me what all that means ? and any info on my Jeep ? cheers

  15. They are very reasonable in price aren't they. I reckon if you bought new you'd be looking at about £6,000 for a complete rig.

    Litchy,

What have you got and how much did it cost you to do your training? I looked into doing my PPL on microlights at Popham airfield. The trouble is there they make you do your first 10 hours or so in a SIMULATOR. Is this normal? I don't want to be paying about £125 per hour to be flying a simulator! The other downside is that you have to buy a microlight or buy shares in one to complete your training.

If you saw a Bedford and Land Rover then yes, they were my vehicles.

Microlights are not necessarliy the cheepest way to get a PPL its a myth, but they are cheeper once you have a licence.

If you go the SLMG route at somewhere like OSF at Enstone airfield its about half the price of getting an SEP licence (the old A licence) then you do a few hours take a conversion that takes an hour or so and you have a full JAR SEP Licence, you can go almost anywhere with that.

I did it that way and now have over 1,000 hours most of it in Europe, and checked out on 26 types in 16 years of flying.

  16. Are there any Paramotor Pilots on the forum? I'm thinking of buying one.

NO NO Loggy go all the way mate and get wings and a stonking big motor & fan up front !!!!! thats what i've done, travelled all over europe & north Africa in mine for many years.

P.S. Think I saw your 2 MVs a couple of days ago when I did a breakdown in the end of a cul-de-sac in Didcot ? I had a quick look and they both looked very nice.

  17. Hi Guys

I have just been given a old Raleigh cycle with 28" wheels, the frame number starts with a 'U' which dates it to 1934 according to the Raleigh cycle website.

When I stripped off the 2 layers of black paint I found that the frame and rear wheel are a light shade of green and 'Nitromors' paint stripper wont shift it so its good paint ?

Could this of been an Infantry cycle ? I know very little about the military then or now but would like to learn !!!!! I dont know how to post photos either so if somebody gives me their email address I could send them the photos they could do it for me ?

    Cheers Ian

  18. That is the late/post-war DP type which could be used as a blackout lamp with the flap down or as a 'normal' headlamp with it up. I assume the DP stands for dual purpose. That particular lamp is not specific for a Jeep as it has the mounting on the bottom as most vehicles, Jeep needing it on the top.

Hi Adrian, I have found a light simular to Franks but with the mounting on the top so was going to use it for the time being untill I find the correct one.

    Thanks for the info, Ian

  19.

    Hello.

This should be a Butler lamp, but is this the right type used on Jeep?

    Frank

Hi Frank thanks for getting back to me, I have found a blackout light which looks exactly the same as yours but has a top mounting so I was intending to use it on my Jeep.

    Cheers Ian
