  3. The modern British Army has become one of the leading fighting forces in the world. Not the biggest but like they say, size isn't everything. What I,m going to try and do here is show you just some of the equipment used in todays British Army. Anyone wishing to add Data to this thread please feel free.

  4. I picked up a nice set of DORO WT86 for £28 from Curry's. They have a good range but I do find them to be a bit small. We where going to use them while out photographing kit on the ranges bit keep forgetting to take them. They also have a habbit of picking up CB so you are never alone. Lot cheaper than texting the guys when a 60+ tonne Challenger2 is steaming there way.

  5. There is also the case of kit being lost, stolen and mislayed. A few years or so ago a Wolf Land Rover was stolen from of the ranges, this is nothing new. Six months later a spat of Sankey trailers started going on walk abouts during training excersises. Not just the trailers. these were packed with all types of kit, private and Military. Basicly what had been going on was the stolen rover and it ocupants were driving into large formations (battle groups) during the cover of darkness hitching up and driving away. The only troops on stag thought nothing of it cos it was a Military Rover and the driver and pasenger were in cammo gear. Nothing was ever found of the trailers or kit but the rover was found in there little lock-up. Big changes have been made since. One other thing, a few months ago we sat and watched a Herc drop on the DZ. after all had landed safely a sweep of the area was conducted, nothing wrong with than, normal pro. Aparently during the jump one of the non British PARAs hadn't secured his weapon correctly and it fell to earth faster than he did. It took both parties just over an hour to find the M16, I bet that wasn't the last high jump he got that day. So remember, if you are out for a walk on the ranges, please use the range cross code. Look left, look right and look up, you never know what will fall at your feet.

  6. It was a great day out mate, I don't know what it is about these smaller shows but everything just seems so layed back. I must admit, after being to this event it has got me thinking about curtain things. I don't want to say to much but if Chris and his team are happy to do so, maybe we could pull the two events Plain Invasion and Popham H4H together over the same weekend and give all types of vehicle owners a darn good time. For the guys into off road driving we have Salisbury Plain one day and for the guys and gals that like the display side of life, less than an hour drive from the camp site to Popham for the H4H event. Both events will be chasing the same charity so plenty of dosh to be made me thinks. I will leave it with the Popham posse to see if this would be posible. We are working on next year but after the cancellation this year, we are going to have to do a bit of reworking. I will give more details to everyone as I find out more, but it will happen for 2010 come hook or crook.

  7. Thought we would pop along to Popham airfield on Sunday and give our surport to a great charity. Mick, Pete, Nick and myself turned up at around nine ready for a great day and boy did we have fun. Throughout the day a fair few vehicles turned in including some Military kit.

These where great fun to watch, the skills all these boys and girls showed was just amazing. The timeing was spot on and needed to be with some of the stunts they were doing. Next in was a small display of the 101st pathfinder group. Again very good in what they do.

So thats about it, I did take a lot more picture's but haven't had time to sort them all out. This was a great day out and a must for anyone that may be in two minds about these little events. I would like to thank all the guys and gals that put this event together and would like to offer any help for the following years if you need it.

  8. Paul, by any chance were you camped or working next to muddy water? I had the same thing last year which turned out to be a horsefly bites mate. Just started out as a small red lump, but as soon as you itch it, hell it goes mad. I ended up on antibiotics for a week. If you are by water have a look, if there are small black fly's hovering over the muddy banks, that could well be what is biting you.

  9. That was one of the main reasons why we pulled the plug on the Plain Invasion weekend. On the same weekend as the PI there was a double battle group out training. During all MRXs everything stops to allow the troops to get on with it.

  10. Sadly another event has bit the dust. First to go was the Army open day at Larkhill, then the Plain invasion weekend and now the Tidworth festival. This event was by far the biggest of all the events on Salisbury Plain. Three days of fun, frolics, air displays and Status Quo. All three events have basicly followed the same path, Money, time, commitment and the need to fit in Army training. All I can say is roll on 2010....

  11. Don't mention Avtur, I hate the smell of that stuff, but I do have friends that would be quite happy to wear it as aftershave. FV they are a nice bit of kit but nothing on the Nooks in my eye's. Also the nooks are easyer to photograph cos you can here them coming for miles around. This allows you to get your camera ready, Merlins tend to be a bit on the quite side so before you know it they are on you and gone.

  12. I'm on the same side as you there Swill, the nook is one hell of a peace of kit. We had two out Saterday troop carrying and hedge hopping, very impresive to say the least. Even the Merlin struggled to keep up with them. Mind you not to good at 3 in the morning when they are dropping kit into the field behind the house. The Seaking ASW cab is a bit of a rair bird round this neck of the woods. I know we have had a bit of rain lately but still not enough to float a sub on the ranges. In total I think there were about twenty halo's and thankfull most of them have now gone. Just a few little birds scouting around the place.

  13. The aircraft is a Merlin, this one is an ex Dutch cab hence the strange new nose. I think they are built by Westland/Augusta but please don't quote me on that. The S.E.D I'm not sure. They have been around for a few years. Hope this helps.

  14. Just a bit of the modern stuff for you guys. Spent the weekend down at the FARP with 663 SQD. Seeing how these boys and girls work with the Halos is just awsome. I hope you enjoy the snaps.
