    Over the last two week Myself, Jack and the rest on the Plain Military team have been working to get the MOD to allow us to have a classic military vehicle meet on the Salisbury Plain training area (SPTA). We have had the nod as long as we stick to the bylaws. We can go out for a weekend drive taken in some of the sights on and around the training area. Everyone is welcome to bring there vehicles of any size and shape as long as they are Military. The public will not been told about his meet up due to this being a trial run.

    No date has been set for the visit and this is were you come into play. When would be the best time for you all to get together? We still have a few thing to iron out but hopfully this should all be sorted shortly. We are hopeing to have the old Fowler Barracks at Ludgershall as our camp-site but the only thing is there is no water so if anyone has a water bowser at hand that would be helpfull. The camping area is less than a mile from all the shops you will ever need IE Chiness, indian, fish n chips Kantaness, kabab, tescos, summerfield and news papers. The ranges are 25 by 10 miles and consist of grassland woods and loads of old farm buildings that we can use to get some stunning photos for callenders and post cards.

    All road crossing will be coverd by the PM teams, latreens will hopfully be sorted but if not bring a shovel and a dungie roll. I am still trying to get hold of a large tent so if there are any out there it would be of great help.

    A small charge might be of use to bribe the MOD into letting us use the Driver training area but this might not be a good idear as there are some very large holes and puddles down there. The Impact zone main road can be used but we must stay on the main road and not wounder onto the grass. You can see some of the wrecks but you may want to bring your binnos. So thats about it if this goes well there is nothing stopping use doing this every year. I am going to contact Walter davis at Six wheel appeal to see if any of the TACR2 boys can give us some fire cover as ours want be ready. If you are interested in the visit please post here. Every one is welcome no matter what you own even Snapper in his Iltis. He has been promising to come down here for years so maybe this will do the trick. I have lined up some of the best photogrphers to cover this visit but you can bring your own camara just dont pock your leanse into any of the camps. SA80 rounds sting when they are being pulled out your arse cheeks.

  2. Many years ago there was rumurs of a Tiger out there painted white. It was on the centre range up on the hill. Also there was what looked like a 88 and a PAK gun but neather are marked on my wreck sheet. Also on this sheet I have the usual Ferret , Humber and Saladins but there is also quite a few Scout cars what can these be any idears? And lastly there is a picture of a Churchill with a bit sticking up at the back could this be a Croc.

    Hello Mark have a look at the new Bulldog pictures I got today as well. Again there seems to be a bit of a ruckus brewing if these are the real thing or prototype versions. Due to the amount of pictures that have been added over the last few months the site is a bit of a mish-mash.

    Sorry Richard What I was ment to say they are having a debait about purpose built Centurion moving range targets not BARVs. These were radio controled tanks and only three were made two of which they think are on the ranges

  5. You are write it is a Sherman BARV. Also there is a debait going on another forum about the Centurions. Aparently only three of the type were built and two of them are on the range having rounds fired at them :banghead:.

  6. As long as they don't think my back garden is an Impact zone. Filling in dog scrapes is bad enough let aloan 155mm shell holes. I would have the lot. Maybe we could all club together and replace all the hard targets with smart cars. Do you think they would notice. A near miss is a hit and a direct hit is a kick in the slabs and a long walk home.

  7. Hello Clive I used to think that but if it helps our troops learn the tricks of there trade then alls well. The new rules of the ranges is that they are not allowed to hit the target but get as close as they can. According to the target sheet I have here there are 20 Humbers on the centre range and 21 on the west range. I have no VRNs for any of the vehicles on the centre but all for the west range.

    West humber targets are

  8. To the ranges or the Impact zone? I would love to have you all come over to the SPTA for a drive around but the I.Z is well out of the question. I'm not that brave to go out there on foot let alone in a vehicle. The chap who got these pictures was doing it as part of his job and like he told me it still scares the hell out of him every time. I have been out there once on foot and I will never do it again. You name the ammo and it is out there the thing is its not the new shells that are the problem its the stuff that was fired during WW2 and before. This stuff only takes a small knock to set it off. Every now and then the army have a scrub burn which set some of this stuff of and hell when it goes it goes with one hell of a bang. Foss shells are the worst they scare the crap out of me. A story went round that a chap was digging out a bank in his garden when he found about ten shells. A army BDT was sent to have a look , It turned out to be WW1 live mustard gas shells. There is a road that runs through the I.Z which is full of craters but passable. You can see some of the vehicle but you will need a pair of binos and a spare change of under pants just in case. :rofl: Anyways please feel free to come over to the ranges for a jolly. There are plenty of things to see like trees and grass and sheep. I like to get there early so I don't end up with an ugly one (did i say that out loud). No really you must come over and have a look around, the ranges are open all year round and as long as we stay to the scalpins roads we will be fine. It is lovely in the summer. I will leave it in your hands you never know it could turn in to a yearly thing.

    Just added a load of picies onto Plain Military. They are all Hard Targets on Salisbury Plain. Sorry if they course upset but maybe some day someone will rescue one or two for restoration. I know which two I would go for but the MOD are not very keen on these vehicle being removed for safety reasons. Plus the tree huggers think birdies are nesting in them. Look out birdie another 155mm incoming. :rofl:

    I think we are going to stick with the Q plate and just have a set of military plates made up just for shows. I have had a good look around the old girl and eveything seems to be in good condition apart from a suspect our rigger which holds one of the fuel tanks in place. Also it has had a set of ice tyres fitted for some reason :?. They must be changed before we go out on the road or plod will have something to say no doute :nono:.

    I have been up to the museum tonight and spoke to the main man and he has informed me that when the vehicle was passed over to the museum no paperwork came with it. He also told me that non of the vehicles have documents so before we start working on them it looks like a trip to the local DVLA offices may be in order, To be honest I haven't got an problem with the Q plate on the Landrover so cant I just keep it and have a set of mili plates maid up just for show use .

  12. A great big hello :wave: to one and all. Never new about this forum till Mark Barns told me about it. My name is tony, I live just on the out skirts of the Salisbury Plain training area (SPTA). My main intrests are modern military photography, I am currently running a website called Plain Military but things have been a bit slow due to the fact that most of the regiments around me are on active duties somewhere in the world. Apart from my photography I also play a part at the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection (BDAC). We have a whole load of airframes currently under restoration and a handfull of vehicles that have been handed over to myself and some friends to restore. We have got ourself a massive barn which we have just finished converting into a workshop. The vehicles we have include

     

    Thorny croft MK9 crash tender

    Rangerover 6X6 TACR2 RIV

    Land rover SER3 109 HSV (helicopter support vehicle)

    Bomb loader with two bomb trolleys

    assorted bombs for the trolleys 1 PAVEWAY, 1- 500pd and 1 - 1000pd Iron bomb

    Bedford MK Airfield re fueler

    two Ferret scout cars.

     

    All the vehicles have got a long history with Boscombe down one way or another. The sad thing about the vehicle is that they are going to need quite alot of work to bring them back to life. I do have some pictures of them on the Plain Military website so please feel free to have a look. Our main goal is to get all of these vehicles up and running for some shows but we are going to need some help so would it be OK to ask you chaps if we get stuck with something.
