Hello
Whilst browsing Ebay I have bought a 1930's Gibson Eccles trailer.
Now I am hoping to restore it back to original spec but I can't find much info, now I know its not strictly a Military item but we have lots on knowledgeable people on here so i thought some one would know?
It has spoked wheels all 3 are present so any idea how and where I should mount the spare?
I have the T reflector again can I legally still use this? if so in what position?
Heres a photo form two or three years before I bought it, its had a very shabby box body built on it which I have scrapped. I believe one spring pin is seized so I will have to make a new one and see if the old one will come out
I was hoping to build something like this but not with high sides, Would I get away with a ply floor or should I do it in boards?
Any thoughts on the correct lighting for it as it currently has a modern light board.
Any help would be much appreciated.

bummer...but good for you....
Well not that good, was due to test drive Sunday but I have had a call from the storage place asking me if I had bought it yet?? Which I though was odd, then he gave me his insider info, they are giving every one on site notice to quit in Jan and he didnt want me to be left with no storage and a big truck, which was decet of him, aparantly some deals been on and off for several years and its finally gone through, so I am back to the drawing board really as having spent yesterday exploring more storage and only finding one at £40 a week!

The really simple answer (although you probably dont want to hear it is:-
1. Go and take your CAT C licence test (you WILL not need driver CPC if you are not driving professionally)
2. When you get your RL get it tested and plated
Then you have no problems at all if you get pulled by the police or DVSA at the side of the road, or god forbid you are involved in an accident.
The cost for the above then becomes completely irrelevant!
Your right I don't want to hear it !
I understand what you are saying I often kick my self as years ago I drove a down plated 8.8 ton lorry so should have done the test then!
The bigger issues is it looks the bottoms fell out of my storage world, Storage I was banking on is now closing, I did find another but he wanted £40 a week!

I think it's probably all going round in your head and so seems complicated, it isn't really.
Thanks its just too much info and questions, I think I am on top of now.

It's a Bedford, there are plenty of parts about (I've got two engines and three gearboxes to start with), and unless you do something stupid or buy a piece of junk to start with you won't have a problem.
Same with tyres; buy something with decent tyres and the amount of miles you're likely to do they'll perish long before you wear them out. Second-hand tyres are about at sensible prices.
Reflectors or lights aren't a problem, standard 7" headlight.
Driver's door handle available NOS or second-hand.
Door bottom is separate from the main part of the door, simple repair or door bottoms not plentiful but can be found.
Rubbers can be found NOS or from trim suppliers e.g. Woolies
Thanks Sean that's what I was hoping

well done was hoping it was you bidding...I was there too but forgot to bid it at the closing time...well done..she will be a fun truck for sure, those RL's great fun
just note they have soft valve seats and do not like unleaded, if she has not been upgraded its a job worth doing as a dropped valve is a bad news job....keep her topped with morris's lead additive...or whatever its called
Not me bidding? the one I am looking at hasn't be advertised yet, I was contacted by some one who heard I was looking for one.

Found one!
Its not perfect but its on budget.
Lights don't work, possibly a long but cheap job.
One reflector is rusting but I assume they are cheap standard units?
Needs a drivers door handle will anything else fit? and the bottom of the door is rotten would I be able to get a spare door to fit whilst I repaired the original as cant have it with no door on?.
Inside of cab is scabby but not rotten.
The very back of the chassis is about 1ft shorter?
Window rubbers look perished I assume they are just standard stuff?
I will let you know what else I find!
Just had a good chat with the very helpful owner who has been quite honest and upfront showing me any work that needs doing.
The lights just need connecting after a repaint so that's easy.
I got the short chassis bit wrong! The chassis is original but the old body had a small amount cut off, but if anything that's an advantage to me.
I will keep you posted.

If its pre 1960 (manufactured) used unladen with an unladen trailer you will need CAT B (car entitlement)
The vehicle will also be exempt test and plate if not used in conjunction with a trade or business
Thanks
So if I made a camper body that would mess it all up as if its fixed it would be come a camper but if its removable its a flat bed? But when the campers on its a flat bed carrying a load unless re registered as a camper?
Its complicated isn't it????
For the moment I will be happy with a flat bed and attend a few shows, best not take our monkey bike on the back or it would be classed as a load?
-
As above really, the people who test the bottles have loads of scrap ones and I am sure they would sell you a couple, have you looked at the size of CO2 extinguishers?
The H&S complications of carrying a full set makes me feel it would be more hassle than its worth

Thanks Sean
So let me look at it this way.
With the licence I have I can drive an RL if its Pre 1960?
What if its after 1960?
-
Any commercial vehicle manufactured pre 1960 is exempt from MOT test and can be driven on a pre 1999?C1 car licence if used as a show vehicle, used UNLADEN and can tow an Unladen trailer,
Post 1960 manufactured vehicles need a test, and if under 7.5gvw can still driven on same C1 car licence. An RL is 8.5 tons? GVW, I think its a fairly easy job to downrate it to under 7.5t GVW
Thanks that was quick

Grumpy, obstinate, peculiar, eccentric old git brimming with useless facts about the most obscure of military vehicles. I also resent the fact that I don't have a full-sized tank at home to play with as I please, get sidetracked by the obscurest of details, climb all over military vehicles given any chance I get, know a lot of facts the rest of the world has absolutely no use for, am usually strong-headed, nit-picky, with a strong sense of humour and am sometimes hard to please... And yet I share a common and international bond with everyone in that can cuss and swear with the best of them, usually in more than one language. :nut:
Are you also a rivet counter?
Welcome

Looking for an RL.
If its pre 1960 its MOT exempt but what if its newer?
They weigh 4.4 Ton I THINK?
So if its pre 1960 4.4 + 3 Ton load =7.4 so I can drive it on my C1 licence
But weren't they re rated to 4 Ton at some time? so it would then be 8.8 ton?
So how do I down plate it, how hard, how expensive and I assume I couldn't drive it until it had been done?

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is the new VOSA law re trailers.
If you are rebuilding one so to the casual eye it would look new then just be aware if you are stopped you may have to prove that its an old one and not newer so doesn't have to comply.
I recently converted a box trailer to a flat bed to carry a Dodgem, I contacted VOSA and the bloke was very helpful and advised me to keep proof photos etc of the rebuild so in future it wouldn't be confused with a new non compliant one, he even recommended fitting a Date of Manufacture plate even though it was a 1996 trailer that legally didn't need one, as it if I did get pulled that's the first thing they look for.
http://www.dft.gov.uk/vca/vehicletype/trailers.asp
I might be over cautious but if you are aware and do get pulled you have a head start

Stick two tyres on it and it will last another 30 years

Well, asking here is always a good option, it is surprising what people have stashed away
trevor
Well Trevor that's what I was hoping, I have asked in the classifieds
I did submit an ad on Milweb but its not appeared yet?
I have all my friends looking too, I think budget is going top be my problem as some of the more expensive ones are like new.
-
I would not be concerned about engine or transmission issues, as they are relatively easy to fix. I always liked the RL...
trevor
You say that but how would I find a spare engine or gearbox?
I am Sh1tting my pants at the thought of having to buy a tyre

warning bells are ringing...your becoming a MV addict like us all...
I have always admired them from a distance but now I have my small pot its time to get my own.
I want one now though!!!!

When you're looking for something specific, there are 2 ways to go about it:
1) Go hunting with a wad of cash and be prepared to spend whatever it takes, or
2) Sit back, relax and wait for one to come to you.
Given that you don't have a huge budget, just keep saving and keep an eye out. You'll find the right vehicle.
I have to agree that the RL is a good looking truck. I really should take the RAF one at the museum out for a drive some time...
Cheers,
Terry
Thanks Terry
I wish I had a bigger budget well don't we all, but I have what I have so I have to just get on with it! I am not looking for a show winner, I just want one for some Lads and Dads days / weekends out before our son gets too old. Strangely enough he is as keen as me!
I just have a bit of spare time at the moment so no doubt when I find one I will be mad busy, its just the way it is.
I would really like to be planning next years shows as I work shifts so have to plan things well in advance.
I am sat here waiting! I have placed some wanted adverts but not had a single offer not even any I cat afford.
In the mean time I did know of one parked in storage I feel its well beyond saving and it disappeared as they built houses on the land, I am part way through tracking the owner down just on the off chance he still has it or has any parts.
Its easy to forget how rare a 50 or 60 year old vehicle can be to find, but some one must want cash for Christmas???
Its been nice how supportive my friends have been too with the usual offers of help I think the bug is biting us all, after all why have a V8 Land Rover when you can have an RL?
-
You cant go wrong for £100
-
If you want an RL, winchman, get the RL. At the end of the day, it will make you happy.
Cheers,
Terry
Thanks Terry I think you are right, no one has said dont buy an RL because, well apart from the MPG!
But I just have to live with that.
Just struggling to find one its only when you try to buy something you realise how difficult it can be to find one.
Regards
Dave

Have you considered a SUMB? Portal axles and a nice flathead V8 engine.
One on Ebay at the moment and they generally seem to be quite cheap at the moment.
Thanks Chris, I had seen that but as I thought it was rare parts may be an issue.
The problem I have is the more I look the more I fancy the RL, to be honest I also like the newer Bedfords and Scammells but they are well out of my price range and some days I feel the RL is too as the prices are all over the place.
