  1. If stolen there were a few Halftracks next to it I know which one I would take.
I would have taken then one that that would be the easiest to load quickly, would be the quiestest, would attract the least attention, would be the easiest to fence etc. In other words, the GMC. >:(

  2. Saw the modern truck it brought a half track into the show. Not sure but I think it was on English plates. It was parked infront of the "Benham camp" on the saturday and sunday
That truck belongs to a friend of ours who has a Halftrack and who also transported the Bolster Truck to the show as he lives near the owner. Is it possible that whoever saw this being 'loaded' was in fact remembering seeing it being 'unloaded' the week before?

I carried out the mechanical rebuild of this Bolster Truck prior to W&P last year and I know every component and every nut and bolt on it. It is indescribably sad for me to see what has happened. If anyone comes across any parts which they suspect may be from this truck, contact me asap and I will do what I can to help identify them.

  3. On my Cummins conversions I use off-the-shelf polyvee belts from our local seals and bearings supplier (who just happens to be HMVF's ChrisG ). All you need to do is let them know the length and number of ribs, or preferably give them the old one to match. MUCH cheaper than from Cummins themselves.

  4. To those who argue that the MoT is valueless because it is only a snapshot I would say that at least that snapshot is being taken and it might mean defects are found before they become dangerous.

Once again, for some owners the MoT is the only time anyone 'mechanical' ever looks at their vehicle. The same probably applies to a lot of modern cars.

  5. You do have a point Mike. However as Frank the MOT inspector said to me, there are owners of modern vehicles who never lift the bonnet, and do nothing until something breacks. A car going in for the first MOT after three years can be a unroadworthy wreck.

Correct, but at least at that point the problems are picked up and dealt with. With no-one to highlight any developing issues they will only be found when they go catastrophic. The next generation of owners are far less likely to appreciate the high ratio of maintenance/mileage required to keep these things going.

I like the idea of MVT, IMPS etc. offering 'maintenance classes' but it's self-selecting - responsible owners will attend, those who don't understand or don't care, won't.

  6. ... Those that are properly maintained by collectors will be roadworthy. ...

...and the logic therefore suggests that those that are not properly maintained by owners will be un-roadworthy. For some owners, the MoT is the only time anyone looks over their vehicle. The petition may be percieved to be too late but sadly at least in my case I missed the original consultation. Those who appreciate the maintainance their vehicles require are not the concern, but those who don't who could really wreck this hobby for everyone else.

  7. Apologies if this has already been posted but I couldn't find anything.

"Do not scrap all annual safety checks for pre-1960 cars

...The Government has announced its intention to scrap the MoT for all pre-1960 vehicles from November. This petition recognises the critical importance of an annual inspection of all older vehicles by a qualified third party and calls for the hopelessly unsuitable current MoT not to be abandoned, but to be replaced with a mandatory, more appropriate annual basic safety check for all classic and historic vehicles of more than 25 years old."

Only a few days to run but this is a well worth signing: https://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/34242

Not all vehicle owners can be relied upon to maintain their own vehicles to a roadworthy standard without some form of obligatory independent inspection. These irresponsible owners will regard the upcoming changes to the MoT rules as an opportunity to make savings on basic servicing and maintenance. It is now only a matter of time before a serious accident brings unwanted attention to our hobby and the erosion of our rights will begin - limitations on annual mileages, no driving at night, no driving on motorways etc etc.

If it were up to me I would introduce an obligatory basic annual inspection for all vehicles. Please sign.

  8. It will be fine, I do this frequently - both towing a Sankey with a WW2 lunette, and a Ben Hur on a standard Land Rover sized NATO hitch. They probably aren't technically 100% compatible in terms of fit but they work fine and those types of trailer connection always bang a bit anyway.

  9. Smithy, mike told me this morning that the old No plate is hanging up some place in his Garage, the No was kept by Praills (But never re-registered to any Vehical) so mike took an age related plate to keep things looking sweet, in the petrol sales area under the counter is a WLF service and parts manual, plus it would now seem that the "Ward" is never to be used again, mike has a Bedford TM on main line winch duty that is working a"Blinder", so now the WLF is not used for "owt" just parked snoozing???

p.s. I used to have a DT980 up to a few years ago, I still have odd bits for em' plus service and parts books dumped in mountains of other stuff not needed.

The 'new' TM has a WLF/Garwood rear winch mounted mid-way up the chassis as he says it's the best winch for his sort of work.

  10. Thanks Rich,

The problem is that we cannot lock the 'box in gear in order to offer up the clutch splines. It looks as though the 'box needs some air to select a range and gear. We plan to pressurise it from the portable compressor and see if that does the trick. Apparently the 'boxes are locked in gear when supplied new...

  11. That last few pic's show a WLF that is still in constant working use winching-recovering etc, it was fitted with a V8 Perkins motor by the Hereford based Garage, but has been used by Regal Garage Upton upon Severn for a good few years, its often rated as the best looking winching outfit working in the U.K. lucky for me I live about a mile from it and class it as local Treasure, I fill my Jeep up with petrol at this Garage, it makes passing traffic think they are in ether a time warp, or in hill billy land.

I hadn't recognised that as Mike's truck in an earlier life.

For completeness we'd better have a 'now' photo:

  12. So folks,

Following on from Vince's earlier post we removed the gearbox today to change what we thought was a worn out clutch. However upon removing the clutch it is almost new. In fact there is almost as much meat on it as on the new one. The pedal had been getting higher and higher and on my last trip out I was concerned even about making it home so I don't know what the problem actually was/is other than something hydraulic?

We decided to fit the new clutch assembly in case it was the pressure plate that was the problem but having fitted it we cannot get the 'box back on. We forgot to put it in gear before removing and we now cannot get it into gear. It is an Eaton splitter. Does anyone have any suggestions as we have no experience of this type of box?

MV content: without this truck our CVRTs and friends' Halftracks don't go to shows.

    Thanks in advance - MG
