Hi All
Just got these pics sent to me from Dave at Dinscott who is doing my Saracen, thought they might be of interest to some. Basically, its a repaint and change of belts.
Actually went down on saturday to see the nearly finished article, looks really good and I want to take it home now, but, patience is a virtue. Will have some finished pics to post later.
Cheers

Not to worry, bandwagons are for jumping on:)
Thanks for coming back Richard, I'll have a look under the back seats. The saracen has been road registered so maybe the dvla do have something
-
I did a quick search but couldn't find this covered on the forum, although I'm sure it has been somewhere.
My new saracen has mil reg. unknown. Would the DVLA have a record of it from when first registered? Also, I looked at the slip of paper in the engine compartment, no number here apart from base overhaul in 1976 and engine serial number. Could it be traced from this?
Last question, where is the id plate hidden on a saracen just in case we have missed it.
Thanks
Paul

I use two magnets out of an old disc drive to hold my civvy plate onto my ferret, not let me down yet.

Well, as far as i'm concerned the knowledge i've gained from this board has saved me alot more money than that, over and above the entertainment the board gives, plus I'd get a free magazine too. I'm in.

Oily,
Have you got the gearbox out yet ?
No he hasn't, he's still positive

Hi Jack
My uncle is going to be there, he was a crewman on a sherman with the Lothians and Border Horse Regiment. He fought through North Africa and then up through Italy. Later he was in Europe in a "Honey Tank", a turretless stuart in which he did recce work, becoming troop leader. This he attributes to the low survival rate in this role, he had a reputation for leading a charmed life. He ended up driving Staghounds but saw no action in these. Adrian is going to re-acquint him with his sherman.
The thread for all the info plus some recollections from the war is
http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?15398-Sherman-Crewman-Frank-Dennis-Gent
Do you have a suggestion as to the best time for me to bring him over?
Cheers

...ha! you think that was a fiddly job, ~try the equivalent on a Saracen!,..
Enough of that Oily, I'm still convincing myself that saracens are easy to deal with, mine arrives next week

I've now moved the blowing from the minifold to the tubes - at least its "as designed" :-)
Matt
Hi Matt
I've got an experiment on at the moment as mine was blowing and backfiring due to loose tubes in the exhaust system. I packed the joint with a soft thermal rope seal from the local woodburning centre and welded (well tacked on for easy removal later) a collar onto the tube to hold it in place. As the exhaust system expands it compresses the rope improving the seal. So far so good, she doesn't backfire anymore when going down hill:)

PS nice looking job by the way

Every square foot of floor space seems to be filled by a small child or other in my house. However, my office has a bren gun under the desk, noone seems to mention it when I have a meeting though, maybe I get better deals because of it...................
-
Know what you mean, my wife refers to this as "tankporn".
-
I had to take the radiator and fan assembly out of a Saracen, in a motorway services once. Not for a belt change, but to fit another hydraulic pump.
Did it help to have a kfc or burger king in the vicinity, I imagine it would during the worst times
-
Magnificent stuff, you're right the detail is exceptional.
Got to sort the real thing out first though before taking on another project
Good luck

Well done Matt, good job.
It will be interesting to see if you notice any difference when you fire her up again.

Hmmmmm, sounds like changing parts in a hot water tank in a linen closet would be easier? What say you?
R
LOL
Don't know what you mean !!
Anyway, its not my hot water tank yet so the plumber is doing it for me :-D

Thankyou gentlemen, I'll pass on the comments, :thanx:

Hi All
Before I take delivery of the new beastie the generator and fan belts need to be changed. Does anyone have an idea of what needs to be done here. In the manuel it says refer to REME, not a good sign.
Has anyone had to do this themselves, can you get in around the rad?
Thanks
Paul

Well done mate. Good job done!
I'm overhauling the brakes on mine now. 4 new cylinders! it should stop on a dime!
.....It better do! :-D
Good luck with that one, though I think I'd use the gears to help stop too, just in case
Where did you source the parts?
-
At last I've done the brakes, a bit fiddly here and there, in fact a real pain, but all is working, the brakes even bled themselves which suprised me.
Now the leak in the transmission box which I'm thinking will be easier.
It was just good to get a job done even though its been waiting for 6 months or so, roll on summer:)

Couldn't get the file to work.
I do agree though, what goes on inside is easily as interesting as outside shots, often the problem with the MV mags as well, not enough interior photos.
-
this the only photo i can find of the interior at the mo but it gives an idea.
Mine is exactly the same, same stowage/table fittings, but hasn't got animal in it. Also, the batteries have been moved to under the bench seat at the rear. Do you find the partition behind the radios gets in he way, mine has been removed but is included in the sale.
Thanks for the photo
Cheers
Paul
Edited: having re read your post, is this the inside of the other guy's saracen?
-
Fair play,
I've been looking at some photos of your saracen at the pageant, she looks great, really nice finish.
But, maybe one for stupid question part of forum, what are the extensions on the roof for? The one on the back is for the penthouse extension, but were there other canvass extensions for the sides as well, or are they just to store more stuff on the roof with?
I'm limiting myself to three questions at a time before I bore other saracen owners off the forum.
Thanks for your help
