  1. Hi,can anyone tell me the correct type of wood that was used on the lower part of a ben hur (not the floor) Thanks in advance Gary
  2. Thanks Tony, "pastparts" are these some type of supplier ? Brakes now working after top up and bleed,BUT I believe you are correct, replacement master cylinder is probably required. Thanks for all the input Gary
  3. Good afternoon Jack, yes the master cylinder was mt.:-| Gary
  4. Good morning all,as some of you know we are the owners of Jacks old "jimmy". Now on the whole, most thing are ok.over the last few months we have been sorting out the rot in the cab area(all stripped) So now started to rebuild it,its been parked up for a couple of months and yesterday when we moved it "under its own steam"................................................HELLFIRE,no brakes.(pedal goes to floor) I've done a quick search on here and discovered that Jack had some braking issues in 2008 which resulted in all new wheel cylinder's,shoes and finally a trip to Rex Wards place and new seals fitted to the hydravac unit.Jack states that after this the brakes worked ok. So question................with a very "soft pedal" and no brakes where do we start looking and testing. Would it be normal to have to re do the brakes again after a short period. Thanks in advance,I'm sure we will get some positive help and IF we make it to W&P the chocolate biscuits and coffee will be on us,thaks guys. Gary/Steve
  5. Thankyou for your input gentlemen, looks like 30 grade it is,how often should this type of oil be changed and does it require a filter change each time. Gary
  6. Hi,getting closer to getting Jacks old GMC back together and back on the road. Really wanted to change the oil,so can anyone suggest the best type,as we are not sure what grade (other than the cheapest ) is in there now. Thanks in advance Gary
  7. Many thanks for the suggestions thus far. Gary
  8. Hello all, just wondered if anyone can point me the right direction to get the "non slip" rough covering (painted on ?) for the cab floor of our gmc. Many thanks in advance (cos I am sure someone will know ) Gary
  9. What are sunny dry days ?:wow:
  10. Hi thanks for the info,I think I'm sorted with Allied Forces. I have read some of your blog re the cab resto, seems as if your are making a pretty good job, problem I've got is that I only have two Saturday afternoon's  to do what most people take months to do.Still it should look good with 10 hoours spent on it :red:. Gary
  11. Hoped that might get you looking :cheesy:. Been reading through some of the older threads and posts on here and boy does poor old Jack come in for some stick :cheesy: (great bloke though). Anyway we all know how Jack loved his old "jimmy",so carrying on in that vein we are trying to tidy one or two parts up.The cab needs some "light" resto (did I say light ,can some one please pass me my white stick). So ATM we are attending to that,I have read (on here I think, but bu**ered if I can find it now)about a product used as a filler between some panels (anti vibration ?). I know some one has made some with piping and OD canvas, but I am looking to buy ready made as my sewing skills are cr*p,as are my computor skills and MV skills and spelling skills, infact just about skills that the normal person would have.:-X Thanks in advance Gary
  12. Hiya, now that is a disapointment NO pink cushion must have a word with Jack about that.I feel as if we have missed out :-D. Re the sorting out,ATM we are stripping the cab to sort out the rust in the normal places . Really just to get the cab a little more comfortable (if that the right phrase for an old MV :undecided:). As I have stated before we're not really looking to do a "full" resto job, just sorting a few things out. There are a couple of jobs that I had not planned on doing but hey- ho that's the nature of the beast I think. Suprised just how easy a lot of the bolts are coming off :-D. Considering taking the old girl to W&P,anyone else going from here ? Gary
  13. Well fella's what can I say, after only a few seconds, music to my ears,no need to panic..............yet. Thanks very much, the tea and biccies will be on me.:-D Just looking for the next thing to panic about. If anyone needs a Dental chair repairing I'm your man :cheesy:. Gary
  14. Just to let you all know their pricing is the same today (05/03/2010) Does anyone know where to get European cover ? Thanks,Gary
  15. Hello again, after my introduction post AKA the virgins I need some help. So after this post not only will it be clear that we are VIRGINS to the world of MV's but we are also complete NUMPTIES. So if or when you meet us please feel free to call us either as long as a cuppa tea goes with it :-D So what we need to know is 1, we have no tax disc I know the vehicle is exempt but should we have a disc (I think so) and if so how do we get one. 2 I understand that the vehicle is also MOT exempt, should we have some sort of paper work to give to Mr Plod when we get pulled up,(sorry should mention at this stage that I ALWAYS get pulled) even at airports and docks :red:. We received no documents at the sale other than the tear off from the V5 (which has not returned from the DVLA after about 5 weeks ) So shall I go into TOTAL PANIC mode OR can some of you great and kind people offer any advise Gary
  16. Just to say thankyou for a very warm welcome. Gary
  17. Getting better,I think :-D The electrics (at this stage seem quite straight forward) BUT I am NO proffesional. I tend to think that i will get a complete loom and rewire the whole thing.Frayed cotton 66 year old cable and petrol don't seem to go together very well . Its more of what is required road legal wise I'm struggling with :nut: Gary
  18. I think those volts kept leaking cos they were not charging !!!! No earth no charge :-D,number 18 on list to do,lights now sorted (I think). Gary
  19. Has that got your attention :-D. Hi my names Gary, opo's name is Steve hence the username gas 44, (g for Gary a for and,s for Steve,"44" being the year of our GMC.) When I say virgins of course I mean MV virgins. Athough been interested in mv's for a number of years we have never really had the time to do anything about it.As time marches on and THAT age approaches we decided to do something about it about 12 months ago. So after looking at some real rubbish we found what looked to be a reasonable bet. We were not looking for a full nut and bolt ground up restoration project. Niether of us has that sort of time at the moment, more of a sympathetic restoration,a bit here and a bit there and maybe a paint job. For us at this time its more important to get out and about as leisure is at a premium. So when we arrived in Dorset about six weeks ago the Gmc on offer seemed about right. The present owner (at that time),had been totally in love with it but agreed that it looked a little tied and need a good next home. Well let me tell you Jack its found one!!!! So the cats out of the bag,its your very own Jack Beckett's old motor. Jack will be the first to agree it does need some attention, lights, flashers, wipers, exhaust, but to name a few. However, all in all a solid start,so thanks Jack, and hope to see you soon. Gary
