  1. I am getting images in my head of something I probably saw on Discovery a year or two back.

I can see images of a steel hawser being deliberately snapped and smacked into a side of pork.

ISTR the outcome was as you say, not cut in half.

    But potentially fatal internal injuries.

As usual I stand ready to be corrected.

You aren't going mad- Mythbusters tried it!

They concluded- with the "pig test"- that although a snapped winch cable would not sever limbs, it could cause pretty severe damage; unlikely to be fatal (but that was a possibility), but extremely painful nonetheless.

Not gonna enter the argument 'cos I don't know diddly squat about winching :-D

  2. Apparently Southern Electric (SEB) bought 14 of these in the early 1980's, so there may well be some in the UK that have actually worked here, as opposed to recent imports.

So says a friend of mine who is a bit of a SEB nut (no, I'm not sure why either) anyway. Don't think he has any photos sadly.

  3. Me again...

We are back in the same boat unfortunately. Not through any fault of ours- the owner of the Land Rover's current storage is emigrating!

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I'm now permanently back from uni, so in Gloucestershire (near Stroud/ Stonehouse). Anywhere near there, Oxford/ Swindon or even Manchester (the three of us are rather spread out!) would be great. Doesn't need to be inside- corner of a field would do for now!

  4. Quite often see something similar to that ( I know nothing about modern MVs so no idea what it is) trundling around Plymouth under it's own steam. Generally looks like they are just out for a play, only appears when the sun is out...

  5. Walking back from the nightclub where I met her at about 3 in the morning- passed a toyshop with a Hornby trainset in the window "I've got one of those" says I...

I'm not quite sure when she became converted, but she got in yesterday after going home for the weekend by train and said "ohh, I saw something interesting in an barn from the train- looked like an old lorry". She also points out (and correctly identifies) old Land Rovers and shouts to me when there's a steam engine on TV. Oh, and suggested going for a ride on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway too :-D

She keeps nagging me to get another Landy and is dead keen on coming to the GDSF this year.

I'm lucky, cant be many 20 year old lasses that daft...

  6. Did a while ago but I'm not really sure what it's going to achieve. I don't really see what business it is of the Government- surely the owners/ administrators can sell it to whoever they like? Don't get me wrong, I'd love it to be saved, but I suspect it's just a question of money and there's not really much the man on the street can do about that.

  7. I wonder what happened to the Plymouth pair, kept at Laira Bridge for years as mentioned in one of the above links. No- one seems to know, so I suspect they were cut up- but it'd be nice to think they are still hidden away around here somewhere. Laira Bridge is a few minutes walk from my student house.

  8. It really is. As you probably gathered I stumbled across it by accident and, had it not been there, would never have realised the significance of the beach we'd ended up by- cause to stop and think, certainly.

Would be a real shame if it was moved because of local strength of feeling- some things are more important that what a few stuck- up NIMBYs think.

  9. Makes sense to me- People were buying a vehicle with a nice plate, selling the plate and getting a new age related one for the nominal fee for a re- reg, if that was a nice one they were selling that too. Can't blame the DVLA for not wanting to give away free money.

I think the whole dateless plates on later cars/ personalised plate thing is silly anyway, but this is liable to turn into an off topic rant so I'll be quiet now...

I do know of a 101 with the reg UZI101 which I thought was quite cool though.
